why we allowed the 'swift boat veterans' to skewer kerry is beyond me. unlike others who really didn't serve (even though they MAY have been in the texas air national guard), kerry served in vietnam. and according to reports (that ARE credible) he served bravely.
now to me the term 'swift boat veterans' has negative connotations. it SHOULD NOT HAVE.

this angers me no end
nothing has changed since, let's say last week (or we could even say the mid-90s) EXCEPT the courant did a couple of pieces on foley and the allegations against him
yet it was just announced he was kicked out of the seminary (as a residence) in bloomfield and ordered to get rid of his fake police/fire car.
foley was never convicted of anything YET there is strong evidence against him. it appears the catholic church took all of the allegations seriously since it did indeed remove him from parishes, strip him of his collar (he has NOT been stripped of the priesthood mind you) and remove him from being the police/fire chaplain.
it was no problem for reporters to go on the bloomfield seminary grounds and SEE foley's fake police/fire car. one would imagine all of the catholic clergy who reside AND visit there would ALSO see that car. one would think when they did indeed see that car WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY ALLOW HIM TO KEEP IT????
did the archdiocese of hartford grow a set now ONLY because of the negative publicity? now THAT is what makes me sick.
we MUST (catholic or whatever) protect our children AT ALL TIMES not only when we may receive negative press

i'll probably never see voices in conflict but i'm still proud of the students who planned it
i'm not sure why i didn't read about this in a connecticut paper. i guess i could have missed it though.
i disagree with the principal in this case. i DO believe the students should have been allowed to perform this piece. however, at the same time, i also believe the principal had every right to say no. i think it rather slimey though he may not have stated the TRUE reason the students weren't allowed to put the play on.
we have to give our young people more credit sometimes. not all of them are constantly thinking about ipods and what celebrity shaved their head this week. it seems like SOME of the wilton students are thinking about what is happening to their country, the citizens of their country and how life is NOT always very easy.
i have no voice in wilton, but i do say to those students involved with voices in conflict, i am very impressed with ALL of you

For the spring semester, students in the advanced theater class took on a bigger challenge: creating an original play about the war in Iraq. They compiled reflections of soldiers and others involved, including a heartbreaking letter from a 2005 Wilton High graduate killed in Iraq last September at age 19, and quickly found their largely sheltered lives somewhat transformed. ............
..............In response to concerns that the script was too antiwar, Ms. Dickinson reworked it with the help of an English teacher. The revised version is more reflective and less angry, omitting graphic descriptions of killing, crude language and some things that reflect poorly on the Bush administration, like a comparison of how long it took various countries to get their troops bulletproof vests. A critical reference to Donald H. Rumsfeld, the former defense secretary, was cut, along with a line from Cpl. Sean Huze saying of soldiers: “Your purpose is to kill.”...........

Richardson's roots were in Jamaica, but he spent a year of high school and one semester of college at the University of Bridgeport in the fall of 2004. Richardson was not there long, but he made an impression on his professors.
"He was here for only one semester. He did well in all of his classes the term he was here," Prof. Edward Geist said. "He wanted to be a business major, and I know he was planning to go into international business."

the last time i got called for jury duty
(no they didn't choose me, they didn't even get as far as actually questioning me. if they HAD, i would have asked to be excused because....) it was for a case where a man (allegedly - yeah right) beat the crap out of a pregnant woman (don't know if it was domestic or a robbery or what). the defendant was sitting in court while all the prospective jurors were brought in (prior to individual questioning). they told us to tell them if we knew any hartford hospital employees (if the beating was alleged why the hell would a hospital be involved i wondered to myself), which of course i do, if we know any east hartford police, which i do and if we knew any of the attorneys involved, which i didn't.

when someone assaults a 3 year old and gets NO prison time. when someone assaults a 3 year old and their name does NOT appear on the sexual predator registry (for civilians to see)

Vernon-AP) _ A 27-year-old Bolton man has accepted a plea deal under which he will get probation, but no prison time for sexually assaulting a three-year-old girl.
James Jones was found guilty yesterday of risk of injury to a minor and second-degree assault. He initially had been charged with first-degree sexual assault. Vernon Superior Court Judge Patricia Swords says she accepted the plea bargain so the child, who was molested in 2004, would not have to face her abuser and recount the sexual assault.
Jones must register as a sex offender for ten years, but his registration will remain secret to people who visit the state sex offender registry. Information about Jones' status on the list will be available only to law enforcement officials. The secret registration was part of the plea bargain.
During the sentencing hearing yesterday, Jones admitted he sexually assaulted the child.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Federal authorities said a New York man arrested as part of a human trafficking investigation forced a 12-year-old girl to be a sex slave, confining her to a house in New York and transporting her to Connecticut to work up to 12 hours a day as a prostitute.
The case shows that domestic trafficking of U.S. citizens is a concern along with international human trafficking, U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor said.
"We are not going to tolerate any type of trafficking here in Connecticut, particularly when children are being exploited in such an egregious manner as we allege here," O'Connor said.........
..........Corey "Magnificent" Davis, 35, face charges of sex trafficking, forced labor, document servitude, kidnapping and transporting minors for immoral purposes. Shamere "Barbie" McKenzie, 23, of New York, was charged with conspiracy to transport minors for immoral purposes.........
...........The operation allegedly allowed Davis to lead the high life. Authorities seized $29,000 in cash, two Mercedes Benz cars, a two-family house in Queens, and jewelry worth $110,000, including a watch with diamond stones, from Davis.
Davis, who has been detained since his arrest in December, faces a maximum term of life in prison if convicted. McKenzie, who was released on $100,000 bond after her arrest in January, faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
The case was investigated by the Smuggling and Trafficking of Persons Investigative Task Force, the FBI, Internal Revenue Service, state and local police......

to NEXT saturday the 24th.
i did venture out yesterday early afternoon to the half door
i figured i'd keep cathy company, since it was snowing so badly out, NO ONE would be in there. how WRONG i was. the worse it got outside, the MORE CROWDED it got INSIDE.
of course they got their tent up as they do every year, covering the patio. someone had to go out every 20 minutes or so and bang the snow off of the tent roof (that someone was me for most of the time, although others did chip in). i was going to drive down there now (well 4 am) to clean the roof off, but i just don't feel like it. i'm still soaked to the bone from YESTERDAY.
today (st patrick's day) is the ONLY day i would never venture there. it is a MADHOUSE. bands all day from 8 am till closing. irish dancing and of course plenty of guinness (and the like) along with a big arse irish breakfast and a corned beef and cabbage dinner later.
if you don't mind crowds and are in the mood to celebrate, DO drop by. they'll be more than happy to see (and serve) you!

For some, it might not make much of a difference.
This year, nearly one-third of those surveyed said they planned to celebrate St. Patrick's Day by attending a party at their favorite restaurant or bar. However, another one-third of consumers prefer a quiet evening at home, with 33.9 percent staying in to make a special dinner..........

Old Lyme - WTNH) _ Abandoning dogs can be considered cruel but the discovery of four mistreated dogs in Old Lyme could be considered criminal.
The property owner said the last tenant took everything of value from the garage, except for his dogs. They were left without food and water for nearly a week, leaving Martha Rumskas, the town's animal control officer with a potentially dangerous situation.
"Well there's one dog in there that I know that's not very nice because I've tried to pick that dog up quite a few times when it's been roaming and I've never been able to catch it," said Rumskas............
............"He had a harness on and it's too tight and it is ripped at least two inches into his flesh," said Rumskas.
Rumskas said she wants justice for the abandoned animals and plans to track down their owner and possibly pursue legal action..............

(Middletown - WTNH) _ Dogs are supposed to be man's best friend, but police in Middletown said that was not the case with a pit bull found brutally attacked on the street.
The dog was dumped on the side of Wilderman's Way Road and left to die of his wounds. On Sunday, a good samiariatan found the animal and called police. He was brought to Piper-Olson Animal Hospital where doctors tried to nurse him back to health.
For everything this dog had been through, Dr. John Gustavson said the pit-bull was unbelievably gentle.
"He was very nice to us, we never muzzled him at all," said Gustavson. "He was great in that sense, as far as we could tell.".............

pi (and elizabeth zimmerman or as she is affectionately known, ez)
today is 3.14.
Pi Fans Have Their Day

This is a story about love. About inscrutable complexity and remarkable simplicity, about the promise of forever. It is about obsession and devotion, and grand gestures and 4,000-word love letters.
It is about a curious group of people with an almost religious zeal for a mind-numbing string of numbers. Actually one number, made up of a chain that is known - so far - to be more than one trillion digits long.
They are the acolytes of the church of pi.................
and you may well wonder what the heck ez has to do with pi. well LOTS. i have heard much of ez but i never saw one of her books or saw her old pbs show on knitting. last monday, i got a copy of the old pbs show "knitting workshop" on dvd. two dvds. the first is four hours long, the second is two hours long. the first has two parts
part 1 is four half hour lessons. ez talks of wool and gauge and casting on and winding wool and increasing and decreasing. she also shows you how to knit a hat
part 2 is four half hour lessons. ez shows you how to knit two different kinds of sweaters. one is a yoke sweater the other is a norwegian dropped shoulder sweater (she even shows you steeks although that word never is uttered).
i have NOT watched the second dvd yet. i'm savoring it.
ez passed a few years ago but i LOVE HER. her daughter meg swansen is carrying on her work AND her knitting camp.
ez is rather like the julia child of knitting. she throws out a lot of conventional thinking and tells you to do what YOU want, what feels good to YOU. oh, as long as you follow just a FEW tiny rules.
and that brings me back to pi
ez had invented and/or refined many knitting patterns based on mathematical formulas INCLUDING her sweater formulas (proportions. yoke to body. sleeve width and length to body).

does the nsa suspect there are THOUSANDS of terrorists in connecticut? it sure seems they do. i never thought of connecticut as a HOTBED of terrorist activity but who knows? (i know and it's NOT)
i have cingular and at&t. there is NO REASON at&t should have turned ANY records over WITHOUT proper (and VERY easily obtained as i stated before) warrants.

Dogs rescued from icy lake
(Montville-WTNH) _ Two dogs were rescued from Gardner Lake Wednesday afternoon after they fell through ice into the cold water.
"They'll be fine," Tony Lasaracina, the dogs' owner told News Channel 8.
Firefighters were called to the lake around 2:40 p.m. after a teen-aged neighbor saw the dogs on the ice, called his mother, and she spotted one in the water. .............

It started as an argument in their first floor apartment Saturday Night. Fermin Rodriguez, 21, accused his 17 year-old wife of cheating on him.
"According to the victim it had been a verbal dispute, then at around 12 midnight on the fourth he became violent," Capt. Lynn Kerwin, Bridgeport Police, said.

(San Francisco-AP) _ The San Francisco district attorney has filed charges against two young men for their alleged role in the vicious beating attack against a visiting a choir group from Yale.
Arrest warrants have been issued for Richard Aicardi and Brian Dwyer. The New Year's Day assault left several of the young men from Yale severely injured.
According to court documents, the alleged assault took place after a party on New Year's Eve at a house in the city's Richmond District...............

There are thousands of uninsured children and leaders at both the state and federal level are calling for an expansion of the HUSKY health care program.
Sandy Prisk of East Hartford came to the Capitol today to explain that with three kids and four jobs between her and her husband, the HUSKY health care program is a necessity.
"It's one less thing that I need to worry about for my kids. I know that there's insurance and I can go to the doctor when they need to go to the doctor," said Prisk.
The importance of good health care for kids is apparently obvious to almost everyone. The New Haven based Connecticut Voices for Children group released a survey today that shows nearly 90% of the public wants uninsured children covered......

Mr. Lightman glosses over the fact that Chris Shays, who was not only the top Republican, but also that subcommittee's chairman during all the years that wounded veterans were subjected to such horrific treatment at the facility, did nothing to expose those abuses and did nothing to bring the situation to light.
Shays is a crafty son of a bitch, and despite being the top Republican on the committee, has avoided issuing a press release on the Walter Reed hearings. (However, while this has been in the news, he was awarded a "Humane Legislator of the Year" award, apparently for his work with the Blackwater widows.) He obviously doesn't want to draw attention to himself on this issue, because there's a pretty good chance that whatever gets thrown at him on Walter Reed is going to stick...........I want to say, as disappointed as I am that Lieberman delivered the Democratic radio response to the Walter Reed fiasco, I'm reminded of an event where Shays and Lieberman had a lot of good things to say about one another, and I can't help but think that there's the beginning of a good story in this............

some protective orders against people OR animals will NEVER stop an abuser. we see the violence day after day (very recently in connecticut-a woman and her daughter were shot to death and then he killed himself). but it MAY save some pets AND people. some is better than NONE

Coping with emotional trauma after serving in war

(New Britain-WTNH) _ Our military troops put their lives on the line, but when they return home some are having trouble adjusting to civilian life. More and more are coping with the stress of war long after life on the battlefield.
The scenes and sounds of war can play over and over in the minds of service members long after happy homecomings.
"We saw one guy burn to death. When he burned he was down to his bones when we got the fire put out," said "Joe", a Connecticut reservist wants to remain anonymous because of the stigma associated with mental health problems. He still struggles with what he saw in Iraq........
.................."I've been waiting almost two years before I get my first appointment with the VA to talk about PTSD to see if I have it or just talk to someone to see if I can control it or do something about it." An administrator at the VA tells News Channel 8 the average wait is much shorter than that.
Mike Fox, a Vietnam veteran who has PTSD, is skeptical and he's concerned about returning vets getting caught up in red tape.

Coping with emotional trauma after serving in war

(New Britain-WTNH) _ Our military troops put their lives on the line, but when they return home some are having trouble adjusting to civilian life. More and more are coping with the stress of war long after life on the battlefield.
The scenes and sounds of war can play over and over in the minds of service members long after happy homecomings.
"We saw one guy burn to death. When he burned he was down to his bones when we got the fire put out," said "Joe", a Connecticut reservist wants to remain anonymous because of the stigma associated with mental health problems. He still struggles with what he saw in Iraq........
.................."I've been waiting almost two years before I get my first appointment with the VA to talk about PTSD to see if I have it or just talk to someone to see if I can control it or do something about it." An administrator at the VA tells News Channel 8 the average wait is much shorter than that.
Mike Fox, a Vietnam veteran who has PTSD, is skeptical and he's concerned about returning vets getting caught up in red tape.

in case you want to know how i feel about gay couples who want to get married, I THINK THEY SHOULD INDEED BE ALLOWED. they should have the SAME rights as everyone else. don't give me the old, 'yeah and what if a man wanted to marry his dog' argument. i don't even GET that one. what does that have to do with anything? a gay person OR a gay couple does NOT have the ability to "TURN" someone else gay. you ARE gay or you ARE NOT gay. simple. (except for anne heche that is). why should gay couples have to worry about things such as inheritance or custody of children (in the case of a death of one of the partners)? it's sad we are not advanced enough to treat EVERYONE equally

(Hartford-AP) _ Connecticut's Old State House in downtown Hartford is looking for financial help to stay open.
It just had a renovation costing more than $3 million, but unless the state comes to the rescue, visitors won't be able walk the halls of the 211-year-old Federal-style building. The Connecticut Historical Society took over operations at the Old State House about four years ago. It says it will begin boarding up the 1796 National Historic Landmark on June 30th.
Historical society officials last week appealed to state lawmakers, urging them to transfer ownership of the Old State House from the city of Hartford to the state of Connecticut. ..........

(Meriden-WTNH) _ The financially strapped Meriden Humane Society is getting a helping hand from a local business owners.
Tyrone is a lucky pup with a loving home and his grooming on Saturday helped other dogs and cats who are not so lucky.
The primping Carolyn Douglas did on Saturday at "For Your Paws Only" helped the Meriden Humane Society. The no-kill shelter is in danger of closing if they do not raise $80,000 in the next few months.
"I thought about what I can do and Saturday is my busiest day so I'll give as much as I can," said Douglas...........
