over the years i've worked at various shelters for women and children. i've done everything from yard work to washing windows to cooking to holding the hand of a crying woman to holding the hand of a laughing woman.

shelters for victims of domestic abuse are (unfortunately) more than necessary. i have read due to the economy, many (in other states) have been closing. we can't let that happen UNTIL WE STAMP OUT ABUSE

Men Announce Domestic Violence Initiative

HARTFORD — - Some 30 prominent men from businesses, television news stations, law enforcement and several other agencies in Connecticut gathered at the Legislative Office Building this morning to announce a new initiative in the battle against domestic violence.

The men pledged to help Interval House, a non-profit domestic violence intervention and prevention program, combat the crime by helping to educate children and families to raising money,

"Domestic violence is a cycle that can stop if we provide the leadership. I truly believe that men can make a difference. We're coming to learn, listen and lend a hand, but also to lead," said Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.

Blumenthal is chairman of Interval House's Men Against Domestic Violence Campaign: "Men Make a Difference." They have been recruiting men to join their efforts since July.

One of way of breaking the cycle is awareness, Blumenthal said, and several television news stations have vowed to help with education and outreach. Brad Drazen, a news anchor for WVIT 30 ( NBC Connecticut), is planning on doing public service announcements with Blumenthal..............

(have to say 'allegedly' here) ALLEGEDLY - a man puts a mask on, beats up the woman he was going to marry IN FOUR DAYS, marries her, then he gets found out. well she suspected it all along she said. hmmmmmmmmmmm

anyway, seems like she gave him the boot AS SHE SHOULD HAVE. oh and he's an alderman for the town of ansonia.

Masked Alderman Attacked Fiancee: Report

On July 1, a 32-year-old Ansonia woman came home to a nightmare, and police now say her husband -- an alderman who was up for re-election in November -- was behind her attack.

Keith Maynard, 42, resigned from his position on the Ansonia Board of Alderman on the eve of his arrest, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel.

The man inside knocked the woman to the ground, covered her with a blanket and hit her with a baseball bat, police said. She told police she did not recognize him. He was wearing a mask, the New Haven Register reports.

Police investigated. They were told a man was seen running from the house soon after assaulting the victim but police could not find him. The woman was taken to Griffin Hospital to be treated for minor injuries...............

•22 family violence homicides.

•6,543 assaults.

•107 sexual assaults.

•17 kidnappings.

•149 instances of risk of injury to children.

•6,691 cases of disorderly conduct.

•4,212 breach of peace cases.

•2,013 violations of court orders.

•288 instances of criminal mischief.

Those numbers include scores of women who have been victimized more than once.'


High-Profile Cases Put Spotlight On Domestic Abuse

Ken Edwards shakes his head in disbelief when he thinks about his first domestic violence training session as a rookie cop in New London in 1981.

The instructor encouraged the young officers to keep family violence a private matter and told them an arrest "is absolutely your last option," Edwards recalled. "Otherwise, see if you can get the guy to take a walk ... down to the corner bar."

That approach is all but extinct today.

The "Tracey Thurman Law" in 1986 made arrests mandatory if there's evidence of an offense. Law enforcement training now delves into the complexity of family violence, and the attitudes of the police, the public, prosecutors and judges have broadened.

Domestic violence, victim advocates say, is finally being seen for what it is: a crime.........

what is wrong with the justice system? who is responsible for this bail amout?


Bloomfield Man Accused Of Attacking Ex-Girlfriend

VERNON -- A Bloomfield man has been charged with brutally assaulting his former girlfriend at her Rockville apartment.Garfield Heinz Johnson, 36, of 7 Norman Drive, was arraigned today on charges of second-degree assault, breach of peace and violation of a protective order. He posted $1,000 bail before his arraignment, but Deputy Assistant State's Attorney Charles Johnson put the defendant on notice that he would seek to increase his bond at his next court date, which is July 3.
Garfield Johnson is accused of smashing his way into his former girlfriend's apartment, trying repeatedly to stab her with a sharp piece of broken wood, then pushing her to the floor and trying to strangle her.The former girlfriend "found it impossible to breathe and she thought she was going to die," according to the warrant for Johnson's arrest. Johnson then stopped trying to strangle the woman, the warrant reads, and stood up and began to stomp her face. He was wearing work boots, the warrant reads.

the last time i got called for jury duty

(no they didn't choose me, they didn't even get as far as actually questioning me. if they HAD, i would have asked to be excused because....) it was for a case where a man (allegedly - yeah right) beat the crap out of a pregnant woman (don't know if it was domestic or a robbery or what). the defendant was sitting in court while all the prospective jurors were brought in (prior to individual questioning). they told us to tell them if we knew any hartford hospital employees (if the beating was alleged why the hell would a hospital be involved i wondered to myself), which of course i do, if we know any east hartford police, which i do and if we knew any of the attorneys involved, which i didn't.

i saw that defendant sitting there in his newly purchased suit (which was so bright it was glowing) smirking up a storm.

i WOULD have asked to be excused not because i knew employees of east hartford or the hospital but because i knew that idiot beat the crap out of a pregnant woman. there was NO doubt in my mind

they better not call me up for THIS case either
Police: Pregnant Woman Attacked With Screwdriver

WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Police said Tuesday a pregnant woman was attacked.
The woman, who was seven months' pregnant, was stabbed several times in the neck and chest with a screwdriver. Police said she was also beaten.
