Bridgeport man charged with threatening police with python

Bridgeport (AP) -- Bridgeport police say they arrested a city man after he ordered his pet to attack two officers. Lucky for them that 9-foot-long pythons aren't very obedient.

Police Lt. James Viadero says 21-year-old Victor Rodriguez was charged with threatening police and disorderly conduct after Monday's incident. No one was hurt.

Officers were called to Rodriguez's apartment on a report that he was threatening his girlfriend with the pet reptile.

Viadero says that when the building superintendent opened the apartment door for the officers, Rodriguez allegedly threatened them with the snake and told it to "Get them!"

White House enjoys city bakery's 'struff'

BRIDGEPORT — You know the Christmas cookies are good when there are no leftovers.
That's the case for Anita Bevaqua McBride, the Bridgeport native and chief of staff for first lady Laura Bush, who recently requested a tray of Italian Christmas cookies from Bridgeport to make her holidays a little more like home.
While she was growing up, McBridge attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church here. Her friend, the Rev. Matthew Mauriello, the pastor of Holy Rosary, brought McBride a three-pound tray of struffoli from DelPrete Bakery here, fulfilling McBride's Christmas wish.
The little fried balls of egg dough dipped in honey and coated with candy sprinkles were a holiday treat at the White House.
"I shared them with the staff. They were a hit and went fast. There weren't any left for the president and Mrs. Bush," McBride said.
Mauriello visited Washington Dec. 19 to see the White House decorations for the recent holidays and brought McBride the struffolis at her request.
"They even went through the metal detector machines, of course," Mauriello said.
He got them at Del Prete, an Italian bakery on Main Street in the Bull's Head section of the city.
"It's a Christmas specialty item," said Lou Mezzo, the bakery's owner.......

Seal Found Shot On Bridgeport Beach

MYSTIC, Conn. -- A harbor seal brought to Mystic Aquarium after stranding itself on a Bridgeport beach had been shot in the eye, aquarium officials said Wednesday.
The 5-foot, 212-pound male seal was found injured Tuesday on the beach at Seaside Park, and was brought to the aquarium, which handles rescue and rehabilitation in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
"Through radiographs last night, a foreign object was found lodged behind the eye wound," said Cynthia Davis, a member of the aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Team.That object turned out to be a bullet.
"His left eye is not functional and at this time he has a poor prognosis for recovering his vision," veterinarian Cara Field said. "There's a great risk of infection occurring, so if he does well we may have to do surgery to remove the eye."
Surgeons then would be able to recover the bullet, and authorities can try to trace it back to whoever shot the seal..........

BRIDGEPORT — An injured harbor seal that lumbered onto the beach Tuesday at Seaside Park and languished there for an afternoon was suffering from a gunshot wound.
A gash above the seal's left eye, following a medical examination Wednesday, was determined to be a bullet lodged in the creature's head.
"This is a very unfortunate situation and we have notified the Bridgeport Police Department," said Tim Gray, spokesman for the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration.
Police Lt. James Viadero said officials here are awaiting information from the aquarium before proceeding with an investigation.
After leaving the water Tuesday afternoon, the 212-pound adult male had stretched out on the sand of West Beach for several hours. Dozens of beachgoers and spectators gathered around the beached seal, which resisted efforts to prod it back into Long Island Sound.
Specialists at Mystic were called to the scene to investigate the seal's then-unknown malady, and it was taken back to the aquarium's facilities in eastern Connecticut...........

(Bridgeport - WTNH) _ A Connecticut soldier has been killed in Baghdad, Private First Class Stephen K. Richardson, 22, of Bridgeport was killed on March 20.
The Department of Defense announced today that Richardson and Sgt. Wayne R. Cornell, 26, of Holstein, Nebraska died March 20 in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations...........

Pfc. Richardson was just 22 years old. He is the 38th person with Connecticut ties to die in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Richardson's roots were in Jamaica, but he spent a year of high school and one semester of college at the University of Bridgeport in the fall of 2004. Richardson was not there long, but he made an impression on his professors.
"He was here for only one semester. He did well in all of his classes the term he was here," Prof. Edward Geist said. "He wanted to be a business major, and I know he was planning to go into international business."

Authorities Describe Ring That Included 12-Year-Old Sex Slave

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Federal authorities said a New York man arrested as part of a human trafficking investigation forced a 12-year-old girl to be a sex slave, confining her to a house in New York and transporting her to Connecticut to work up to 12 hours a day as a prostitute.
The case shows that domestic trafficking of U.S. citizens is a concern along with international human trafficking, U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor said.
"We are not going to tolerate any type of trafficking here in Connecticut, particularly when children are being exploited in such an egregious manner as we allege here," O'Connor said.........

..........Corey "Magnificent" Davis, 35, face charges of sex trafficking, forced labor, document servitude, kidnapping and transporting minors for immoral purposes. Shamere "Barbie" McKenzie, 23, of New York, was charged with conspiracy to transport minors for immoral purposes.........

...........The operation allegedly allowed Davis to lead the high life. Authorities seized $29,000 in cash, two Mercedes Benz cars, a two-family house in Queens, and jewelry worth $110,000, including a watch with diamond stones, from Davis.
Davis, who has been detained since his arrest in December, faces a maximum term of life in prison if convicted. McKenzie, who was released on $100,000 bond after her arrest in January, faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
The case was investigated by the Smuggling and Trafficking of Persons Investigative Task Force, the FBI, Internal Revenue Service, state and local police......
