A Village Of Curses? Supernatural Stories Lure Curious To Colonial Site

In the far upper corner of northwestern Connecticut, not far from the historic town of Cornwall in the shadow of three mountains, lies a place where only the bravest of hearts tread.Once a colonial village called Dudleytown, it is said to be the site of mysterious deaths of residents in the 1700s and 1800s, unexplained madness in the 20th century and tales of strange noises and wraiths in the past 50 years. Through word of mouth and the reach of the Internet, Dudleytown has become something akin to Connecticut's "Blair Witch" forest.
The story has all the makings of a really great horror story: historical figures, mysterious happenings, ghosts, a curse," wrote author Gary P. Dudley in his 2001 book "The Legend of Dudleytown."Still, these days, about the only thing any supernatural investigator or curious teenager will encounter is a burly state trooper and road barriers, meant to prevent people from entering the private property. The residents of the Dark Entry Forest - near the Dudleytown site - are tired of paranormal investigators, writers, hikers and people interested in the supernatural trespassing on their property..............

Museum pays homage to actors and artists behind movie monsters

BRISTOL, Conn. --A visit to any party store can outfit a haunted house, and it only takes a tractor to make a hay ride, but it takes a particularly ghoulish personality to create Frankenstein's monster, bring the creature out of the Black Lagoon or put the Phantom of the Opera on stage.
The souls who brought the world's most famous movie monsters to life are the focus of a museum in Bristol. Here, in a residential neighborhood 20 miles southwest of Hartford, the creator of the Witch's Dungeon Classic Movie Museum pays homage to the actors and makeup artists behind the ghoulish characters that have haunted childhood memories.........

West Hartford-WTNH, Oct. 23, 2006 11:00 PM) _ Police are investigating acts of vandalism in downtown West Hartford.
The Blue Back Square project that was targeted has been a lightning rod in the community.

"I was mad. I was really angry. This not a responsible action by a civic minded person," says Kelly Kennedy, West Hartford.
Blue paint tattooed on the side walks and buildings declaring bad progress for Blue Back Square. Last year in a controversial vote, the people of West Hartford voted for the commercial, residential and retail development in the center of town. After a year of building, the graffiti started showing up.
"It's pretty much a juvenile thing and it is what it is."
Anybody who does something like that, the law should look at them and they should punish them severely," says Bob LaPerla, West Hartford merchant.

Hill-Stead has been a hub of activity since the Pope family first occupied their newly built country estate in Farmington, Connecticut. Here, from 1901 to 1946, in succession, Alfred and Ada Pope and their daughter Theodate, with her career-diplomat husband John Wallace Riddle, entertained many illustrious individuals—authors, artists, poets, academics and presidents. The Popes and Riddles also extended their hospitality to town folk and employed dozens of workers, among them Earnest Bohlen, butler to the family for nearly 60 years. Today, Hill-Stead is a 152-acre, 10-building museum and a National Historic Landmark.


lovely little museum in farmington - up on a little hill, right off of farmington avenue (route 4 i believe). the grounds are lovely as well. many activities throughout the year including poetry readings in the warmer months. check the newspapers and their website for upcoming events. it's worth a visit.

sauce was made from stuff i had around: a few teaspoons cashew butter, a few teaspoons peanut butter, soy or tamari or shoyu, a couple of teaspoons of hoisin, a couple of teaspoons of some balsamic vinegar i had boiled down/reduced with some natural sugar, some chili flakes and water to thin it all down

Center Church was built over a portion of this early colonial cemetary, with construction beginning in 1812 and finishing in 1814.

Buried in The Crypt are the remains of Margaret Arnold; the first wife of Benedict Arnold.
Also in The Crypt: Sarah Rutherford Trowbridge, who has the oldest dated stone in The Crypt, dating back to 1687.
President Rutherford B. Hayes visited Center Church in 1880 and viewed the burial site of his grandmother and aunt, who are buried in The Crypt..........

For the last few weeks, Debra Avery's dining room home has become the unofficial center for exonerating the women of Connecticut executed as witches.Her 13-year-old daughter, Addie, pores over documents and occasionally corrects her mother on certain dates and names. Nearby is a short pile of books with such titles as "Damned Women" and "Entertaining Satan." Their e-mail and fax machines have been buzzing with correspondence from other descendants of those accused of witchcraft in the 17th century.For the past year Debra and Addie have, with increasing intensity, taken on a project to clear the name of their ancestor, Mary Sanford - one of four Hartford women accused of witchcraft and executed by hanging in 1662.But this was more than 350 years ago, people tell her, and most people already take it for granted that these women were subjected to injustice. Why go to all this effort for an official apology?Avery always knew that Mary was in her family tree somewhere. She just didn't realize that she was a direct descendant - she's Avery's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother ("That's eight `greats' for me, and nine for Addie," Avery says). It was then that Avery felt an urge to right a wrong."Mary Sanford is our grandmother - it doesn't matter if she's eight generations back," she says."We're trying to fix a mistake," Addie chimes in.Like investigators at the outset of a case, they've considered a number of motives for why someone would charge her ancestor with "familiarity of Satan." Among other suspicious behavior, Sanford's accusers noted that she had partaken in "a bottle of sack" (liquor) on the Hartford town green. Avery guesses that perhaps such behavior ruffled the stodgy community.Chimney rage is another possibility. Mary's husband, Andrew Sanford, held the post of "chimney viewer" - one who makes sure everyone's chimneys are clean and in good condition. One could have made plenty of enemies with such a job.After Rebecca Greensmith (who would also be hanged) confessed to witchcraft and implicated Mary Sanford, the indictment against the Averys' ancestor listed her crimes as "not haueing the feare of God before thyne eyes" and for "knowing of secrets in a preternaturall way beyond the ordinary course of nature."Sanford's husband was also accused but eventually acquitted. That should be expected. Walter Woodward, the state historian, says women in Connecticut were four times more likely to be accused of witchcraft than men.................

please have your pets spayed or neutered so we don't have to worry about this. we have PLENTY of other things to worry about, don't we? please don't adopt an animal in the first place if you cannot handle it or you're only doing it for status or becuase you think it will match your furniture.

(Waterford-WTNH, Oct. 20, 2006 5:55 PM) _ Keeping canines and cats comfortable while they await a new home is the goal of the New Companion Animal Sanctuary. The Humane Society wants to make sure pets have a home-like environment.

This looks like a typical home and that is the idea.
"We wanted it to feel like a home environment for these dogs," Holly Hawkins Bourne from the Humane Society said. "The shelter is really super stressful."
When you start to walk around you see the house caters to four legged friends. Dog beds are scattered throughout the home. The cat room comes complete with a cat tree to climb on. And you might have guessed what will be tuned into the TV.
"We're getting cable installed and they'll be watching Animal Planet," she said.
It is a dog's life. The Connecticut Humane Society calls it it's Companion Animal Sanctuary. Built on 63 acres of land in Waterford with a fenced-in dog run, it is where dogs and cats go after being kept in kennels if they have not been adopted within 120 days.
The Connecticut Humane Society does not put a time limit on how long it takes to adopt one of these guys, so while they are here the idea is keep them as comfortable as possible, keeping them happier and therefore healthier............

"We were searching vehicles to come into the city and we finished with the car that was in our bay and going to the next car up and pulled in and I watched the guy squint his eyes and boom."
Second and third degree burns cover parts of the Burlington native's body, and shrapnel tore into his head...........

Black widow spider found in supermarket grapes

HARTFORD, Conn. --Price Chopper removed a brand of black seedless grapes from the shelves at its Newington supermarket Thursday after a woman said she found a poisonous black widow spider.
Sheryl Rosen of Rocky Hill bought a bag of Autumn Royal black seedless grapes on sale Tuesday. It wasn't until Thursday, when she was eating some grapes at work, that she found the spider in the bag.
"I couldn't believe it," said Rosen, who was not injured. "I never thought I'd see a black widow around here."
The spider was taken to the Connecticut Poison Control Center at the University of Connecticut Health Center, where Rosen works, and verified as a black widow.
"Right now, we have it in a jar and we will wait until we hear if anyone is investigating further about the source," said Bernard Sangalli, toxicologist and administrative director of the center.......

Pardons sought for victims of Connecticut's witch hunts

NEW LONDON, Conn. --Justice is being sought for 17th century victims of Connecticut's witch hunts.
A group of Connecticut residents, some of whom are descendants of victims executed as witches, are calling on the state to issue pardons.
"We need to right this wrong," said Debra Avery, a ninth-generation descendant of an accused Connecticut witch. "It's making a public statement that these people were all wrongly put to death."
She and others have asked the state Board of Pardons and Paroles to exonerate the victims of Connecticut's witch trials. However, the agency says it pardons only the living.
Puritans in Connecticut interrogated dozens of accused witches between 1647 and 1663, and tried and hanged eight people.
Avery's ancestor was Mary Sanford, a 39-year-old mother of five who was accused of witchcraft by neighbors because she drank sherry at night in the woods behind her home. She was tried in Hartford, found guilty and hanged.
The witch trials in Connecticut ended when Gov. John Winthrop Jr. imposed standardized and objective evidence for trying witches.
Walter Woodward, Connecticut's state historian and a University of Connecticut history professor who has researched Connecticut's witch trials, questioned the call for pardons.
Most early settlers were deeply religious and believed strongly that the devil existed and worked through humans, he said. Accusations of witchcraft were taken seriously in the colonies, where settlers lived in fear of disease and attacks by Indians.............

Woman Says Coyotes Attacked Horse

Another Connecticut community is on edge Wednesday night over a coyote attack, NBC 30 News reported.
The attack comes just days after an attack in Washington, and this time, residents said, the coyotes became so aggressive they attacked a horse.
A spokesperson for the Department of Environmental Protection told NBC 30 News coyotes attacking a horse is pretty much unheard of, but people in North Stonington said they believe a pack of coyotes did exactly that.
The 1-year-and-a-half- year-old quarter horse has some severe injuries. The colt, confined to a stall for his own safety, is nursing dozens of bites, and cuts 8 inches long and 3 inches deep.
"He did a lot of crying, I wanted to sleep out here with him," Christine Bomster said.............

this week at work between 11 and 1, there is a breast cancer awareness display set up. several women are staffing it. there's information and food and all sorts of things. i didn't stop yesterday and i wasn't going to stop today either, but i was walking by with someone and she stopped. there were three molded breasts made out of some kind of flesh feeling material. they were to demonstrate how to do a self examination. one had a lump in it one had a fibroid in it and i don't know what the third had in it. my friend was touching them and the woman at the display was explaining the one with the 'dimple' in it was the one with the lump/tumor. someone had decided to perform surgery on it and remove the lump. so i, in all of my glory said, 'oh some IDIOT decided to play doctor' (of course meaning someone deliberately set out to ruin it). the woman said, 'oh well, no not really. it was a mentally handicapped person who did it'. what the hell could i say? i said 'sorry' and i scrammed outta there tout suite.

Last month, a New York woman was bitten at a Branford rest stop, and now a jogger in Washington, Conn., was taken to the hospital Tuesday after being attacked by a coyote.
Hugh Rogers had to have 15 stitches on his right forearm after he said he was brutally attacked by what he said was a coyote on West Churchill Road in Washington...............

State worker allegedly took workers' comp while playing football

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --A state employee who worked at a reform school was arrested Monday on charges she collected workers' compensation while playing professional football, prosecutors said.
Corynthia D. Simpson, 34, of Middletown was arrested by state inspectors and charged with two counts of fraud and one count of third-degree forgery, according to the chief states attorney's office.
Simpson's attorney, M.H. "Reese" Norris, declined comment Monday.
Simpson was out of work from the Juvenile Training School for a purported job-related injury while she was also playing tackle football for the Connecticut Crush of the National Women's Football Association, prosecutors said.
Simpson played as a defensive and offensive lineman for the Crush, which plays in what authorities called the world's largest women's tackle football league.
Simpson played in all games this season, including one in June in which she made 10 tackles, prosecutors said............

60-Yr. Sentence For 1 Of 6 Accused Of Nailing Man To Death

NORWICH, Conn. -- A judge handed down a 60-year prison sentence Friday to one of six people accused of killing a Norwich man by beating him and pounding nails into his heart and liver.
Michael Pires Sr., 51, received the maximum possible sentence for his murder conviction in the June 2004 death of William Derose, 43, a friend of Pires' son.
Derose was severely beaten, kicked and struck with a dumbbell before 1½-inch nails were pounded into his torso, authorities said. A medical examiner testified during Pires' trial that the nails caused Derose's death...........

Congressman Christopher Shays (R-CT) said in a debate Wednesday night that the abuses at Abu Ghraib were part of a "sex ring," but not torture, RAW STORY has learned.
"It was outrageous, outrageous involvement of National Guard troops," Shays indicated in a debate, "who were involved in a sex ring and they took pictures of soldiers who were naked, and they did other things that were just outrageous. But it wasn't torture."
Shays has since indicated in interviews that though he does consider it sex abuse, and believes sex abuse is torture, he believes it was "more about pornography than torture."

Lost dog attracts attention in Milford

A woman looking for a lost dog in Milford was mistaken as a potential child abductor.
The woman who stopped on Union Street Saturday asked a group of boys if they had seen her lost dog, according to police.
After the boys ran back to their yards, a parent told the woman not to approach them for help, police said.
Although officers initially handled the incident as suspicious, they later found the woman was actually looking for a lost dog, Officer Vaughan Dumas, Milford police spokesman, said.
Dumas said it was the second such incident in Milford in the past two weeks.......

...............A person should report a lost dog before they look for it, which would allow officers to help, Dumas said.
If that were done, officers might not have to investigate suspected................

Cheney: Lieberman 'case' illustrates basic philosophical difference between two parties

With less than a month to go before the elections, Vice President Dick Cheney offered up strong words of praise for Joe Lieberman, while taking shots at the "Dean Democrats" who have "purged" the Connecticut senator from the Democratic Party.
"The case of Joe Lieberman is a perfect illustration of the basic philosophical difference between the two parties in the year 2006," Cheney said at a Topeka, Kansas fundraiser for Rep. Jim Ryan on Thursday afternoon. "And it's a reminder that the elections on November 7th will have enormous consequences for this nation, one way or the other."
Lieberman is running for reelection as an Independent, after his upset in the Democratic primary to challenger Ned Lamont, primarily due to his continued support of the war in Iraq and his perceived coziness to the Bush Administration..........

Shays on Foley handling: At least no one died

HARTFORD, Connecticut (AP) -- Republican Rep. Christopher Shays defended the House speaker's handling of a congressional page scandal, saying no one died like during the 1969 Chappaquiddick incident involving Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy.
"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day," the embattled Connecticut congressman told The Hartford Courant in remarks published Wednesday.
"Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added.
Shays' comments recalled the Chappaquiddick incident, when Kennedy's car ran off a Massachusetts bridge, killing his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy did not immediately report the tragedy, and he later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.
Last week, Kennedy campaigned for Democrat Diane Farrell, who is locked in a bitter fight with Shays that could help determine whether Democrats recapture the House after 12 years of GOP control........

is EFFING NUTS. i stopped by my popi's house today (he's home on tuesdays. one of the only days he is home. he is 79 years old. he has been living in west hartford in the SAME HOUSE for 45 years.). he got a letter from the town. they have appraised his house at TWICE what it was last appraised at. that means he has to pay taxes on THAT amount. THAT IS EFFED UP. that is ALL blue black. i voted against it TWICE but it went through. TWICE the taxes. oh the mill rate didn't go down mind you. i'm even guessing it went up. i didn't read the letter (yet). i will tomorrow. i am going to write to the town AND the courant. not that it will do any good. it won't. but again. that is SO effed up. TWICE, DOUBLE his taxes. my dad is 79 and on a fixed income. SHITE. that is EFFED UP. i am so mad my head is spinning 360 degrees

Stratford officials worry about mayor carrying guns

STRATFORD, Conn. --Mayor James R. Miron is taking some heat for allegedly packing heat.
A Town Council leader and some town workers say Miron has taken a handgun into his Town Hall office and town council meetings, raising concerns about public safety and making them uncomfortable, the Connecticut Post reported Sunday. Some say they have seen the mayor with a gun at both his hip and strapped to his ankle.
Miron, 41, a lawyer and retired Marine, refused to confirm or deny that he carries weapons to Town Hall or meetings. But he defended his right to do so.
"If I do carry guns to Town Hall, I would never admit that for personal safety reasons and my own right to privacy," said Miron, a Democrat. "I don't want someone intent on firing a gun at me or anyone else knowing if I carry guns or not."
Miron said he has had a gun permit since 1999. Local police say he had a town permit that expired last year. The mayor says he now has a state permit that allows him to carry guns anywhere in the state. He said the only reason he would fire his weapon is to defend himself or to save another person's life.
Under state permits, weapons must be concealed at all times, police say. Records on gun permits are not accessible by the public.
"It is my right to carry guns, and it is also my right not to confirm when and where I carry them," Miron said.
James Feehan, a Republican and chairman of the Town Council, told the newspaper that he saw the mayor carrying two guns at the same time -- one strapped to the ankle and the other under his suit jacket -- during a council meeting within the past few months........

LITCHFIELD -- A Tibetan festival opened Saturday morning on a grassy field at a nature preserve in Litchfield. Visitors, vendors and performers surrounded a pyre of burning incense while a Tibetan monk led the crowd in a spiritual song.After the opening ceremony at TibetFest 2006, held at the White Memorial Conservation Center, the crowd dispersed to share, revel in and learn about Tibetan culture and causes. Vendors sold handicrafts, clothes and rugs. Under sunny skies, visitors strolled around the booths, ate Tibetan noodles and dumplings or watched the dancers, musicians and singers.There was an exhibit by a Tibetan photographer. A painter displayed prints of his tangkas, which are paintings of religious deities. A monk made a colorful mandala out of sand.Phurbu Dolma, 28, sat on the grass with her family and listened while a performer sang modern Tibetan songs."It's beautiful here. I like it because all our own people are here and Tibet is going on. It's about Tibetan culture," said Dolma, who lives in Virginia but was in Litchfield visiting family.TibetFest continues today and Monday from 10 a.m. to dusk.

Lieberman continues attacking critics of sexual predator cover up

So let's see...a congressman gets exposed as a child sexual predator [1], having Internet sex with underage pages between House votes [2]. A fellow Republican congressman exposes evidence that the Speaker of the House was informed [3] of the sexual predator's behavior, and did nothing about it for months or even years. The Speaker does not deny the evidence. Yet, when lawmakers call for the Speaker to resign, what does Joe Lieberman do? He focus his major attacks not on the sexual predator, not on the Speaker who covered up the scandal - but instead, he attacks critics of the Speaker.
No really, this is not a joke. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Joe Lieberman's comments from today in Torrington [4] about the scandal, in which he reiterates his earlier attacks [5] on Ned Lamont and others for calling for Hastert's immediate resignation in the wake of the sexual predator scandal:
"Right now I’d say this thing is spinning out of control, it’s become another partisan frenzy in Washington, that’s the wrong way to go at it."
So let me get this straight: Joe Lieberman's major reaction to this awful, disgusting and horrific scandal is to berate as "partisan" those who want just a smidgeon of accountability? Of course, he never explains how it can be "partisan" when many of the loudest calls for Hastert's immediate resignation are from conservatives [6]. But even beyond the dishonesty is the sheer shamelessness of it all. These pious declarations are coming from the same man who used the consensual affair between Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky to build his own name recognition by parading himself all over the Washington talk show circuit as Mr. Moral. .......

Hartford-AP, October 1, 2006 8:45 AM)_ The first day of October has ushered in more than 100 new state laws or sections of laws that address everything from teen drinking parties to child welfare cases. Starting today, it is illegal for someone to knowingly allow minors to possess alcohol on their private property. The legislation closes a loophole that allowed parents to hold house parties with alcohol for their teens and friends. The first offense is an infraction, but subsequent offenses carry up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $500, or both. The law also bans minors from possessing alcohol anywhere, instead of only in public places. Another new law requires the Department of Children and Families to notify a child's grandparents if the agency removes that child from parental custody. Lawmakers say the law will help keep families together. Starting today, the government will be prohibited, in most cases, from subpoenaing members of the news media to testify, produce or disclose information from confidential sources. .............

The US Senate has passed the Detainee Treatment and Trials bill (S. 3930) by a vote of 65-34, RAW STORY has learned.
This follows the US House of Representatives passage of a similar resolution (HR 6166) yesterday, essentially scoring a significant pre-election victory for the Bush administration. Critics have denounced the bill as a suspension of the right of habeas corpus, which entitles detainees to seek release from unlawful imprisonment.
