this story made me cry. a nine month old baby with TWENTY SIX broken bones? some already healing, they were that old. a woman who was eight months pregnant assaulted / threatened with a box cutter by her 'boyfriend'. he goes to jail and does MINIMAL time, gets out AND SHE LETS HIM BACK IN WITH HER and the BABY? i don't care if he physically broke the baby's bones and she didn't - THEY BOTH ARE GUILTY and MUST pay. a nine month old is going to pay for the rest of HIS life AND he is INNOCENT. what kind of people live in this world?

When told in June that his 7-month-old son had 26 fractures, Hartford police say, Jimmy Smith didn't even flinch. Rather, the Massachusetts man - who was on probation for assaulting his son's mother last fall when she was eight months pregnant with the boy - didn't say a word, police say.
"He did not change expression or affect when he was told that his son has 26 fractures throughout his body," a detective wrote."It should be noted that Smith never referred to the baby as his son, or child, or even by his name ... calling the baby 'it,' and 'the kid,'" the detective, Sabine K. Nyenhuis, noted in an affidavit.On Tuesday, Smith, 41, was arraigned in Hartford Superior Court on 26 counts of first-degree assault, two counts of third-degree assault, and a single count of risk of injury to a minor.Prosecutor Sandra Tullius said the state filed one first-degree assault count for each of the baby boy's fractures. The charge is filed under the statute's "extreme indifference to human life" section, she noted.Smith is being held in lieu of $750,000, and returns to court July 31.The baby's mother, Drucilla Thomas, 38, of Fales Street in Hartford, also was charged. Talking to dogs through sign language
(Killingworth-WTNH, July 18, 2006 5:00 PM) _ Dr. Dolittle had his own way of talking with the animals and now it can be as easy as sign language.
Two deaf Dalmatians are doing something totally unexpected. They're helping people learn sign language.
"You listen to your friend okay."
It's a sight to behold. Southern Connecticut State University Students are using sign language to talk with Georgia and Hogan.
SCSU student Timothy Edwards says,"I figured it would be difficult communicating with them."
Hogan and Georgia are Dalmatians and both are deaf.
Owner Connie Bombaci says,"Being deaf the belief was that deaf dogs should be destroyed."
The dogs were rescued by Connie and Jim Bombaci. She decided to teach both the American Sign Language.
"They're very intelligent. For Hogan to understand 65 signs when most dogs don't understand that many verbally, that says a lot."
Connie says,"Georgia. We think that she understands most of them but Georgia has a very different personality and if she doesn't want to listen to it she turns her head away." ............

it's not so much a party affiliation

STAMFORD, Conn. --Beverly Stevens, a 67-year-old retired nurse, stays up to the wee hours of the morning knitting baby caps. She can't stop stitching, determined to save lives.
The Ohio woman is among the volunteer knitters around the country who are planning to send thousands of baby caps to developing countries.
The grassroots campaign comes after a global report on newborn mortality in May found that about 4 million babies die in their first month of life, including about half of those in the first 24 hours. Simple measures, such as knit caps to keep babies warm, could help save many of those lives, according to the report by Save the Children in Westport.
"It seemed like such a simple, satisfying way to help somebody else," Stevens said. "I'm touching something that's going to touch a baby, a mother who I never met."
Save the Children, which is working on the initiative with the Warm Up America Foundation, set a goal of enlisting 75,000 knitters. The caps will be sent to Washington, D.C., by January and then to Malawi, Bangladesh and possibly other countries, said Eileen Burke, a spokeswoman for Save the Children.
"We felt this was an incredible opportunity to connect women in the U.S. with women and babies overseas," Burke said.
Stevens has recruited some 20 volunteers alone, though she's still trying to convince her husband. She sat by, frustrated over what to do, when Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters struck........

Two Connecticut National Guard Units Heading Overseas
HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Connecticut National Guard said two units from eastern Connecticut are being mobilized for duty in Iraq.
About 30 soldiers from the 134th military police company of Norwich will be deployed for up to 18 months.
State Guard officials said about 20 soldiers from the 1109th Aviation Classification and Repair Depot in Groton are also being mobilized.
There will be a send-off ceremony Wednesday in Groton

Emus on the loose
(Middletown-WTNH, July 10, 2006 2:38 PM) _ Farmers in West Simsbury are desperate to find their missing emus. Five of the large flightless birds are living at the Flamig Farm; two got loose this weekend and are still on a wild adventure. One was spotted in Simsbury. The last known sighting of the other bird was in Middletown this morning -- a good 45 miles away.

It has been a full week since Senator Lieberman announced he would hedge his bets on the outcome of the Democratic primary by circulating petitions to run as an Independent in November. Today, he got called on that strategy at one of his own campaign events.
In between events in the Hartford area today, Senator Lieberman made a quick trip to the Tigin Irish Pub in Stamford to get the endorsement of the Irish/American Democrats of Connecticut.
There were two anti-Lieberman picketers outside who claimed not to be part of the Lamont campaign.
Inside, I found myself in the middle of a verbal confrontation from someone who claimed to be a life-long Democrat and Lieberman supporter.
"I'm wondering why you're being a 'fair weather democrat' saying that you'll only respect the Democratic primary if you win, isn't that the epitome of a 'fair weather Democrat?" asks Maura Keaney."I'm gonna win," says Lieberman."And if you win I will respect that and I will support you 100 percent as will other Irish-American immigrants," says Keaney."I want ultimately to give a larger group, including a larger group of Democrats the opportunity to vote in November," says Lieberman."Aren't Democrats smart enough to know when the primary is?" asks Keaney."I hope so, and, in a way this is a challenge and look, this is the point of our system," says Lieberman....................

Sgt. Jared Luce lost both legs when a bomb exploded underneath his vehicle in Iraq.
The organization Homes For Our Troops pledged to build the Luce family their very own home in Coventry.
Contractors from the Home Builders Association of Hartford County are donating the materials and time....................
what a great program: homes for our troops is! we MUST never abandon our TRUE heros.

this is my third posting on him. here are the others; i'm NOT going to be politically correct and a (former) taliban member.....
i'm not against understanding other cultures OR other religions OR other beliefs but i am NEVER going to understand (or want to) things like treating women like chattel or worse, killing them for doing something so horrid like GOING TO SCHOOL. there is NOT ONE BIT OF SYMPATHY IN MY HEART for this taliban member (current or former i don't give a shite). and please don't forget who gives aid and comfort to al qaeda. i will go so far as to say (AGAIN) this man NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED IN AMERCIA much less let into a school here.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A former Taliban ambassador who sparked controversy by enrolling as a nontraditional student last year at Yale University was denied admission to a program that would have put him on track to receive a Yale degree, a supporter said.
Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi, who had been studying in a special program that does not award degrees, became the topic of debate after a New York Times Magazine story in February described his life at the Ivy League school.
Supporters said the school was promoting understanding across cultures. But critics, including some alumni, were aghast that Yale would open its gates to someone who represented a repressive regime that harbored al-Qaeda.
Students in Hashemi's program are eligible to apply for admission to the Eli Whitney Program, which awards the same bachelor's degrees received each spring by Yale undergraduates.........

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A former Taliban ambassador who sparked controversy by enrolling as a nontraditional student last year at Yale University was denied admission to a program that would have put him on track to receive a Yale degree, a supporter said.
Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi, who had been studying in a special program that does not award degrees, became the topic of debate after a New York Times Magazine story in February described his life at the Ivy League school.
Supporters said the school was promoting understanding across cultures. But critics, including some alumni, were aghast that Yale would open its gates to someone who represented a repressive regime that harbored al-Qaeda.
Students in Hashemi's program are eligible to apply for admission to the Eli Whitney Program, which awards the same bachelor's degrees received each spring by Yale undergraduates.........

new billboard advert for Sony's white PSP has caused consternation across the US videogaming community. The ad shows a white model dressed entirely in white threateningly grasping the face of a black model. Next to them are the words, "PlayStation Portable. White is coming". The ad can also be seen on the Dutch official PSP site.
Sites such as Kotaku, Joystiq and Digital Battle have questioned whether the ads are racist. So far the debate has split comments sections with some condeming Sony and equal numbers defending the ads as a harmless personfication of the handheld console's two available colours........
i go into work VERY early. each morning i stop at the same place and get two 24 oz black coffees. not only is the coffee MOST excellent BUT the service is as well. there is one little tiny woman working there and she busts her ass. she also has my coffees for me as soon as she sees me walking in the door. EVEN if there is a big long line. and yes, sometimes there IS a big long line at the time of the morning (especially security guards from EVERYWHERE. the joint is lousy with 'em). the coffee place is not in the most savory of hoods. i don't mind though. i've never really had a problem. an occasional pan handler or the like. there are also a lot of police officers who happen to stop in (it's situated in a place where there are state troopers, local city police and another kind of police right at hand). this morning it was raining out. i got to the coffee place and i opened my door a wee bit. i didn't have my shoes on and i was fumbling about with my head down trying to put them on. i hear a man talking to me, but i don't quite understand what he's saying. i give him the old, wait a minute universal signal. after a bit, i get out of the car and proceed to enter the joint. he's on my heels asking me where such and such a street is. i answer him then he asks if he can have a ride. i look him in the eyes and calmly with my voice level, say NO. he then starts in about me not giving him a ride because he is black. well if he wasn't black before he said it he sure was charred AFTER he said it (by now we were INSIDE). i tore him a new one. i told him i didn't give a flying yoo hoo (well my language may have been a bit more on the salty side) what the hell color he was, i was NOT LETTING ANY STRANGE MAN OR WOMAN IN MY CAR AT 3 AM. i wish i had my camera in my hands at the time. if you could have seen the look on his face, it was priceless. then the little woman who works the coffee started in on him. he tore outta there like no one's bid-niz. he picked on the WRONG women with that shite (at 3 am)
(and there is the other fact that i couldn't even give my best friend a ride because i have so much 'stuff' in my car. in my backseat AND in the passenger seat. there is only room in the drivers seat and that too is a squeeze)

"I have one goal, and it is to be the Democratic nominee and win this primary," Mr. Lieberman said after an Independence Day parade in this eastern Connecticut town, where he marched with a few dozen people, drawing both cheers of support and shouts of opposition.
Speaking to reporters at the end of the parade route, Mr. Lieberman decried what he saw as too much hatred in politics.
"Once you start hating, you lose the ability to get anything done," he said.
He added later that when he disagreed with his party, it was on the basis of principles.
"I think that saying 'you've got to be with us for everything' is the road to defeat for any political party," he said.
The parade today was Mr. Lieberman's first public appearance since he announced that he would begin gathering 7,500 signatures on nominating petitions so that he can seek a place on the November ballot as an independent if he is denied the Democratic nomination. .................

What are we looking for, Vietnam, where 50,000 people died?" Lieberman calmly responded, "We have a plan," but Barry shot back, "Who has a plan?" one of my first postings on the nutmeg grater was about the statue of noah webster in west hartford center (and the little story i heard that goes along with that statue and it's missing finger). i came across this story about ruth ziolkowski. wife, widow of the sculpter, korczak ziolkowski. turns out ms ziolkowski is a west hartford native and is overseeing her husband's legacy; the crazy horse sculpture in the dakotas.

The widow of self-taught sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, whose dream it was to honor American Indians by carving the likeness of Sioux warrior Crazy Horse into a granite mountain in the southern Black Hills, turns 80 on Monday.
The Connecticut native didn't set out to run a multimillion-dollar operation that spans a 1,000-acre complex, employs 176 -- including seven of the couple's 10 children and several grandchildren -- and draws more than a million visitors a year.
But after her husband's death in 1982, Ziolkowski felt she must carry through with his commitment -- and use dynamite, drills and determination to fulfill the dream she had already adopted as her own.
"It's not a one-person deal. I'm the one that gets all of the accolades and all of the glory and it doesn't need to be that way," Ziolkowski said in an interview at the memorial's Laughing Water Restaurant. "This is a team effort. It wouldn't be here if we didn't have a lot of great people."
Even at 80, Mrs. Z, as she's known around the complex, is very much in charge. She is always willing to greet visitors with a smile, pose for a photo and ask where they're from.
Ziolkowski is genuine, sincere, humble and gracious, said Rollie Noem, chief operating officer.
"She's very detailed but also very visionary. She's an astute business person and she lives this project 24/7. It is her passion," Noem said...........

Judge Spares Lewis The Cat, Grants Owner Special Probation
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A judge spared the life of alleged neighbor-assaulter Lewis the cat on Tuesday, but ordered him to remain inside his owner's Fairfield home at all times.
"There are no exceptions. None," said Superior Court Judge Patrick Carroll, who also granted accelerated rehabilitation to Lewis' owner, Ruth Cisero.
Cisero's record will be cleared in two years if she completes 50 hours of community service and Lewis stays indoors. If Lewis does get out, Cisero could face up to six months in prison. An animal control officer, not a judge, would decide what happens to the cat.
Cisero was charged with reckless endangerment after neighbors complained that Lewis' long claws and stealth have allowed him to attack at least a half-dozen people and ambush the Avon lady as she was getting out of her car...............

Lewis the Cat is akin to a capital felony convict: He faces a death sentence or life in prison - his owner's home - without possibility of release. His owner may learn his fate today.The fluffy feline's crime was attacking neighbors on nearby Sunset Circle in December and February."You wouldn't believe what this cat can do," victim Janet Kettman said Monday. "It's not just a scratching. It's a mauling."Since February Lewis has been under a lifetime restraining order. If owner Ruth Cisero moves, she must register him with the local animal control officer and keep him indoors. If she gives him away, the restraining order stays in effect and she remains responsible for him."Lewie," as Cisero calls him, has become an international cause celebre.He has a MySpace Web page created for him by Fairfield University graduate student Erin Reeves. Sferrazza said. Silva posted a $30,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Enfield on June 27. A copy of Silva's arrest warrant was not available Thursday.Silva, 44, said she was surprised at how police arrived at the charges against her and said she will request a trial."I understand what the charges mean, but I don't understand how they apply to me," she said, adding that she obtained a permit for her business in 2004.At the time, Silva said, she explained the nature of her business to Zoning Enforcement Officer Wayne Bickley. Bickley could not be reached for comment. She showed a visitor a copy of a home occupation and professional services registration form that describes her business - selling adult-based content. Missing puppet found by side of highway

BRANFORD, Conn. --A man who said he found a stolen marionette by the side of the highway has returned the $10,000 puppet to its owner -- no strings attached.
The 4-foot, 60-pound handcrafted puppet, which was going to be showcased at this week's International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven, was stolen over the weekend from the Stony Creek Puppet House Theater.
The Sicilian puppet with African features suffered some minor damage in the ordeal. The metal rod used to hold it up was bent and it had some scratches above the eyes on its hand-cut walnut head.
But the puppet's owner, Jim Weil, said he was able to fix the rod with a vice.........

yesterday, my ex-boss took me out to dinner. we went to a restaurant in west hartford center. we met at 5:30. the center wasn't bad then. not too too crowded. plenty of parking spots in the big lots. we had a lovely conversation and lovely dinner. (she was my BEST boss ever and we are absolute TOTAL opposites in EVERY way). she remarked how she really liked west hartford center and was looking forward to blue back. i remarked how i HATED the center, it's status-seeking people with their suvs (we were sitting by a big window and i noticed an suv pull up in front of the restaurant. it contained ONE young woman. ONE. too young to have a family and too old for it to be her parent's car. i was LIVID) and how i had voted AGAINST blue back TWICE. by the time we left the restaurant, the sidewalks were CHUCK FULL of people in their finery showing off. that's exactly what they were doing. they were there to see and to be seen. i parted from my ex-boss and went to my car. the entire lot i was in (it's huge) was FULL. i really don't like what my center has become. we've lost something in the process of gaining nothing but crowds with too-big cars.

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. --But for his beat-up 16-year-old pickup truck, David Brown of Old Saybrook might be oblivious to today's rising oil and gas prices, even impervious to them.
He's lived for 20 years in a tiny house made of hay and stucco without electricity or central heating. He grows much of his own food organically, so he doesn't need fertilizers or pesticides derived from petroleum products.
A highly efficient wood stove heats his home. He keeps his food chilled in a root cellar. Tiny amounts of propane power a reading lamp and a stove. He once had running water, but his well became silted, and he now fills jugs with water when visiting friends.
At a time when it has become almost fashionable to measure one's carbon footprint -- the amount of carbon dioxide produced from one's lifestyle -- that of David Brown is all but undetectable, as if he could walk in sand without leaving a trace.
He could be smug right now. He's not.
He just goes about his life, a life he has chosen, not a life he must endure, keeping things simple, though he seems almost saddened by some of the things he sees. A woman arriving at the supermarket alone in a mammoth SUV to pick up a few groceries left him with a mental image of excess.
Small is beautiful.........

WEST HAVEN, Conn. --A registered sex offender who wants to sell ice cream has appealed the police department's rejection of his permit application.
Erdal Sahin, 24, sells ice cream out of a truck and calls his business Twin Monkey Ice Cream. Last month, the West Haven police denied Sahin a permit after a criminal background check.
He wrote a letter asking the City Council to reconsider. He said his permit application was approved last year after a similar background check. But Police Chief Ronald Quagliani said he enacted stricter rules when he became chief in July, after Sahin's permit for last year had already been approved........

TOLLAND -- Five teenagers were arrested early Sunday and charged with throwing doughnuts at a state trooper and his car, fleeing the scene and eventually backing into two troopers with their Jeep, police said.Trooper Patrick Mulcahy was driving north on Cider Mill Road at 12:45 a.m. Sunday when he and his car were pelted with doughnuts. Mulcahy and Trooper James O'Donnell, who was in a second car with a police canine, stopped and chased the five teens through the woods to their Jeep, which was parked in the lot behind town hall, said Lt. Alaric Fox, commander of Troop C in Tolland.The driver backed the Jeep out and hit both troopers, police said. The four teens in the Jeep were arrested. The fifth was found later that morning, police said. All were released to their parents that morning.....

ANGER at President Bush could bring down a number of congressional Republicans, and one Democrat might join them. He is Joseph Lieberman, senator from Connecticut. Many voters there want nothing more than to sink "Bush's favorite Democrat." They are mad at Joe Lieberman over his uncritical support of the Iraq war and 18 other things, including his bottomless need for right-wing approval.
So Lieberman will not have a clear sail into November, easily smiting a little known Republican. First he'll have to duke it out in a tough Democratic primary on Aug. 8. His challenger is businessman Ned Lamont, who, if elected, would not be Bush's favorite anything.
There is delectable irony in the candidacy of Edward "Ned" Lamont. Polished, trim and rich, Lamont lives and works in Greenwich, home of the Bush dynasty. Lamont would make a more convincing descendant of the late Connecticut Sen. Prescott Bush than W himself. But he doesn't need anyone else's fancy ancestors. He has his own, namely great-grandfather Thomas Lamont, who headed the House of Morgan..........

NEW LONDON, Conn. --A repeat sex offender that even a Superior Court judge suggested be locked away forever has been sentenced to five years in prison for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl.
Edward F. Boyle, 45, was sentenced Wednesday for two counts of second-degree sexual assault.
"You scare me, Mr. Boyle," Judge Susan B. Handy said before sentencing Boyle. "You frighten me and I don't think you have a true concept of the illness you suffer from."
The sentence was accepted by the court because the lawyer for the Groton teenager who was assaulted said her client was too fragile to testify.
Boyle was released from prison in 1999 after serving 18 years on manslaughter and sexual assault charges. In 1980, he strangled a 20-year-old Coventry bowling alley worker while he tried to rape her, according to court records.
He admitted the crime while he was serving a six-year sentence for raping a 52-year-old woman in Manchester.
Boyle will be required to register as a sex offender, receive psychiatric evaluation and treatment, and be subject to random testing and searches.
As a condition of his 15 years probation, Boyle will also be required to get approval for romantic and sexual relationships.

He won his freedom and became a successful 18th-century businessman so revered by this river town that its denizens to this day tend his grave.
While state and local historians know Smith's story well, they want to make it as well-known to the rest of the world as the story of Amistad and its hero, Cinque. To do that, they have undertaken an ambitious, international research project that will call on the expertise of scientists, archaeologists, historians and human rights activists.
"This is the story of the human spirit prevailing over evil," said David Richardson, a British historian taking part in the project. "It is a legacy of hope and optimism."
In July, scientists and historians will open Smith's grave in the First United Congregational Church's cemetery and remove his remains in an effort to bring Smith, metaphorically, back to life.
In doing so, they hope to provide a human face to represent the millions of anonymous Africans forced to come here as slaves in the country's early years. They also hope Smith's story will advance the country's dialogue on American race relations and broaden Connecticut's understanding of its role in the slave trade.......

went to
sit-n-knit yesterday and got more stash! the center was a MESS yesterday but the visit to the yarn store made it all worth while. very nice people in the store. it's a pleasure doing business there (unlike many OTHER stores in the center). the rain was unbelievable. i'm wondering if i should start building an ark
the blue & pink yarns are 100% alpaca from peru. the green and green/purple combo are luxury bumpy yarn by charlene (99% merino and 1% nylon - it's SO cool) and it's by farmhouse yarns. the orange/pink yarn is; claudia hand painted yarns 100% merino. the little red and green balls are baby alpaca (SO SOFT). i'm going to use them to make the strawberry fruit hat for baby s (well she's a year and a half now) . the brown/orange and grey/black/brown wicked cool yarns are malabrigo hand dyed - kettle dyed merino.
i have NO idea (except for the strawberry hat) what i'm going to use the yarns for. i also bought a book (you can see it under the malabrigo) with unbelievable modular vest/sweater/jacket patterns.

my beads, FINALLY
remember these strips ^^^^^^^? well the beads are finally done (drying on drinking straws)! i made them out of torn strips of raw silk, fabric paint, fabric ink, wire, beads, silk roving, wool roving, a bunch of different yarns and LOTS of mod podge. i am going to make yarn necklaces and use one or two of these beads on each one as focal points. when i get that far, i'll post pictures
