Lieberman Reacts With Silence After Report Ties Leaks To Bush

By MARK PAZNIOKAS
Courant Staff Writer

April 8 2006

News of President Bush authorizing leaks of intelligence reports to discredit critics of the Iraq war broke before noon Thursday. Democrats quickly lined up to demand a public accounting.

Conspicuous in his silence was Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., the politician analysts say could have benefited most by speaking out.

Analysts and operatives in both parties said Friday they were puzzled that Lieberman, whose perceived coziness with the Republican president is fueling a primary challenge by Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont, found nothing to say about Bush for 28 hours.

"Say anything. Even something mildly critical would have no doubt helped in his primary," said Larry Sabato, a University of Virginia political scientist. ...........

i thought that's what this was

yesterday morning i was standing outside at work (having a butt of course) and i saw a BIG parade type procession. there were a couple of banners in the front but i couldn't read them due to the angle i was at. there was a marching band (which LOOKED catholic. red outfits and big hats) followed by a TON of people in regular dress with MANY MANY MANY children (why weren't they in school i wonder) in what appeared to be catholic school uniforms. police cars in front and in back. they wended their way (i'm guessing from the cathedral of saint joseph) on farmington avenue and flower street to capital avenue.

Catholic bishops claim church is under fire at Capitol
By Susan Haigh, Associated Press Writer April 5, 2006
HARTFORD, Conn. --Connecticut's three Roman Catholic bishops said Wednesday that they believe their church is under fire in the state legislature, where there have been efforts to require Catholic hospitals to provide emergency contraception for rape victims.
Hartford Archbishop Henry J. Mansell, speaking to more than 500 followers who attended Catholic Day at the Capitol, did not accuse specific legislators of being anti-Catholic. But the archbishop said he does believe "Catholic bashing" is on the increase and there is an abortion rights agenda behind the emergency contraception bill.
"We have to see the agenda beneath the agenda," Mansell said. "Many would like to see Catholic services and the Catholic Church go away."
A bill that would have required all hospitals, including Catholic ones, to provide the morning-after pill to rape victims died in the Public Health Committee last month after the panel ran out of time to act.
But last week, a version of the legislation reappeared in the Democrats' spending bill. It set aside $5 million in energy assistance for hospitals that provide rape victims with emergency contraception......

Singer Gene Pitney Dies at 65

Apr 5, 8:07 AM (ET)
LONDON (AP) - Gene Pitney, the singer whose hits included "It Hurts to Be in Love" and "Town Without Pity," died Wednesday at a hotel in Cardiff, Wales, during a British tour, his agent said. He was 65.
Pitney was found in his bed by his tour manager, Mark Hawes of In Touch Music told the British Broadcasting Corp.
"He did a good show last night at St. David's Hall and it was wonderful," he said.
There was no immediate word on a cause of death.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Pitney had his first success as a song writer with "Rubber Ball" which was a top 10 hit for Bobby Vee in 1961.
As a solo performer, he had his first success later that year with "Love My Life Away." And he had another hit as a writer with Ricky Nelson's "Hello Mary Lou."......

Special probation ruled out in animal cruelty case
April 4, 2006
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. --A Superior Court judge has denied special probation to a Bridgeport man accused of ripping off the tail of a greyhound at the Shoreline Star dog track.
Shawn Smith, 20, Monday was denied an application for accelerated rehabilitation after both the prosecutor and the owner of the dog objected. The special probation could have led to criminal charges being erased from Smith's record.
Smith's job at Shoreline Star included leading the racing dogs to the track and he was arrested weeks after an incident at the track on Sept. 6.......

AP Interview: Dodd says he has "itch" for 2008 presidential bid
By Andrew Miga, Associated Press Writer April 4, 2006
WASHINGTON --U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd says he is considering running for president in 2008.
"It's an itch," Dodd told The Associated Press during an interview in his Senate office on Monday. "Could grow. Could disappear. It's an itch. It's not a bad word to use."
The 2008 race for the Democratic nomination is expected to be a crowded one, with national figures such as Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., seen as likely candidates.
"There's an itch," Dodd said. "It's a little itch at this point."
Dodd said he realizes that the field is rapidly starting to take shape. Other Democratic presidential hopefuls are already laying the foundation for possible White House bids, traveling to key primary states, lining up campaign staffers and courting top fundraisers.
"If you have any thoughts of doing it, you ought to make up your mind pretty quickly because the window closes," the senator said.
He did not offer any timetable on a decision.........

wow

i have never heard of prai beauty or cathy kangas. i looked up her products just now and i don't care that they are expensive. i attempted to find out if they tested on animals or not, and i sure can't even find ingredients listings. i DO care about that

however, this woman did something unbelievable, something wonderful. she offered canada 16,000,000 to STOP the seal hunt.

i am of the belief that animals are NOT necessarily lower forms of life than humans by the way. they are just a different FORM of life. yet i also wonder what sorts of food, or education or medicine or shelters 16,000,000 can buy for (if not the children of this nation) canadian children.... tough dilemma here

Connecticut Businesswoman Makes $16 Million Offer to Canadian Prime Minister to End Slaughter of Canadian Baby Seals

NEW CANAAN, Conn., April 4 /CNW/ -- In a just-released letter toCanadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Cathy Kangas, CEO and Founder of PRAIBeauty, a global beauty company, has offered to raise the $16 million thatCanadian fishermen will realize from the sale of the pelts of slaughtered babyseals. Ms. Kangas wrote: "If you stop this year's hunt immediately, we willprovide you with the $16 million to be distributed at your discretion." TheCanadian government has stated repeatedly that the seal hunt provides neededoff-season income to the fishermen in the communities of the Gulf of St.Lawrence and Newfoundland. Ms. Kangas also proposed working with the Canadian government to institutea program to buy back existing fishing licenses and launch a program ofeco-tourism in Northeastern Canada to replace the seal hunt. "Canadianfishermen could earn more money serving as park rangers for high end tours toCanada to see the beautiful spectacle of seals giving birth on the ice floes,"she noted. She said that whale-watching tours in Canada have been verysuccessful attracting visitors. "We are providing you with an alternative to what Paul McCartney called 'astain on the character of the Canadian people.' If this is really simply aneconomic problem, then take our offer," Mrs. Kangas stated in her letter. Themoney, she pointed out, will be raised from private citizens and animalprotection groups worldwide which oppose the seal hunt including The Humane Society of the United States, which has more than nine million members............

Tilbrook A Legend Living In Obscurity

April 4, 2006 By ERIC R. DANTON, Courant Rock Critic

There's a good chance you can hum one or two of Glenn Tilbrook's songs without a second thought. There's an equally good chance you could pass him on the street without giving him a second glance.
Tilbrook, a singer and songwriter who was the primary voice of the influential English rock band Squeeze, occupies a rare niche in popular music - that of the obscure rock legend. The notion of credibility without accompanying fame is familiar to theater and cinema, where character actors abound. It's much less common in pop music, where someone who performs a well-known song - say, the Squeeze hits "Tempted" or "Black Coffee in Bed" - often has a well-known face. Think Bono, or Bowie.Although Tilbrook says people occasionally recognize him, he's usually able to live unmolested by the star-hungry public."It happens sometimes, but not really to the point where it's a burden to my life," he says by phone from New York City, on a solo tour that stops tonight in New Haven............

Glenn Tilbrook performs tonight at Café Nine, 250 State St., New Haven. Jim Bianco opens. Tickets are $20 for the 9 p.m. show. Information: 203-789-8281.

glenn tilbrook

my favorite squeeze song: annie get your gun
(difford/tilbrook)
She goes for her medical
She’s passed,
it’s a miracle
She’s up over the moon
She whistles nonsense tunes
She wants drinks for everyone
She’s found a chord that she can strum
Emotions leaking out
Her paint’s all over town
What’s that she’s playing?
(annie get your gun)
What’s that she’s taking?
(the song has to be sung)
She’s gone electric
(annie wipe them out)
That’s unexpected
(strum that thing and shout)
Don’t pull that trigger
(annie get your gun)
Don’t shoot that singer
(you’re shooting number one)
He’s not into miracles
Sees life all too cynical
The cat has got his tongue
Now she bangs on his drum
He says pull the other one
Bells ring, look what you have done
Emotions leaking out
Her paint’s all over town

Living Breakthrough Doctors Regrow Part Of Middletown Girl's Bladder, Fuel Hope For Organ Regeneration
April 4, 2006 By COLIN POITRAS, Courant Staff Writer

A 16-year-old Middletown girl is one of only seven people in the country who have successfully re-grown significant portions of their damaged bladders, in what doctors are saying is a major breakthrough in organ regeneration that could someday help heart patients and others. Although Kaitlyne McNamara completed her surgery five years ago, a research team at the Children's Hospital in Boston wanted to make sure the procedure worked before announcing its accomplishments Monday in an online edition of The Lancet, a leading British medical journal.
The cheery high school junior was enjoying her newfound celebrity status Monday, speaking to relatives about her upcoming appearances on ABC and CNN and fielding media phone calls with Hollywood star aplomb."I am one of the first successful ones in the United States," an excited McNamara explained to a reporter in a brief phone interview after coming home from school. She is a junior at Middletown High School. ..........

MoveOn to target four GOP House candidates in $1.3m ad buy
04/03/2006 @ 10:06 amFiled by RAW STORY
NBC affiliates have rejected MoveOn.org ads targeting 4 Republicans for voting in the interest of big oil, RAW STORY has learned.
The $1.3 million ad buy, which MoveOn calls the first in a series, will target four Congresspersons in competitive districts. Representatives Chris Chocola (IN-2), Thelma Drake (VA-2), Nancy Johnson (CT-5) and Deborah Pryce (OH-15) will be the first hit. All four voted against giving the U.S. Department of Justice authority to prosecute oil companies for alleged price gouging.
According to the National Republican Congressional Committee, NBC affiliates in
Columbus, OH and Hartford, CT have refused to air the ads.
The campaign will be launched at a telepress conference today at 1 pm EST.
The ads and their substantiation, can be viewed at
MoveOn.org.
The complete script of the Virginia ad follows:

ahhhhhhhh here's the courant's take on things (a BIT different than the story above i must say)

Johnson, Murphy Feud Over Ads Campaign Heats Up Early In 5th District
By MARK PAZNIOKAS Courant Staff WriterApril 4 2006
The political air wars opened Monday with caustic television commercials that tar U.S. Rep. Nancy L. Johnson and her opponent, Christopher Murphy, with the acts of others.A liberal advocacy group, MoveOn.org, struck first with a commercial that links Johnson, a 5th District Republican, to the symbol of Washington corruption, convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. She has no ties to Abramoff. One local television station refused to air the ad.With more than $2 million in the bank, the Johnson campaign counter-attacked with a commercial holding Murphy, a Democratic state senator, responsible for the MoveOn ad. Murphy has no affiliation with the group. The spot will air today. The unexpected flurry of political punching and counterpunching, more typical of Labor Day than the opening day of the baseball season, was a reminder that all three GOP congressional seats in Connecticut will be hotly contested as Republicans try to maintain control of the House."It is a stunning exchange, I will say, by both sides so early in this campaign," said Brian Flaherty, the chairman of the Johnson campaign. "When the first punch was thrown, Nancy and the campaign decided not to take it sitting down."Murphy said he preferred that no independent groups air commercials in the 5th District, but he refused to call the MoveOn commercial unfair for linking Abramoff to Johnson, who never accepted money from the corrupt lobbyist. Murphy said the ads by Johnson and MoveOn should be judged differently."The difference is she controls the content of her ad. I don't control or have anything to do with the content of the MoveOn.org ad," Murphy said. "It seems totally hypocritical to respond to an ad that she thinks unfairly links her with Jack Abramoff with her own ad that unfairly links me to MoveOn.org."MoveOn.org on Monday began airing ads criticizing Johnson and three other GOP House members in Indiana, Ohio and Virginia. All four are engaged in so-called "second-tier races," contests in which incumbents are targeted by Democrats, yet the Republicans still are considered significant favorites. Democrats need a net gain of 15 seats to take the House. The group has committed $1.3 million to a series of ads that will air against the four incumbents between now and June. About $340,000 has been budgeted for the campaign against Johnson to assure that most viewers see the ad several times. The first MoveOn commercial ostensibly is about Johnson's relationship with the energy industry, which has given her more than $300,000 in campaign contributions over her 24-year career in Congress. The spot recites energy measures she has supported, which the ads described as anti-consumer.....

and here is the script for the nancy johnson commercial from moveon.org

you can judge for yourself (they do say ms johnson took money from OIL COMPANIES not abramoff. however, they DO mention abramoff in the commercial. again, judge for yourself)

Jazz alto saxophonist Jackie McLean dies at 73
By Stephanie Reitz, Associated Press Writer March 31, 2006
HARTFORD, Connecticut --Jazz alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, a performer and educator who played with legendary musicians including Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, died Friday. He was 73.
McLean, a contemporary of some of the 20th century's most famed jazz musicians, died at his Hartford home after a long illness, family members told The Hartford Courant.
McLean was founder and artistic director of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford's Hartt School. He and his wife, actress Dollie McLean, also founded the Artists Collective, a community center and fine arts school in Hartford's inner city primarily serving troubled youth.
University of Hartford President Walter Harrison said Dollie McLean called him Friday with news of her husband's death.
Harrison said that despite his many musical accomplishments, McLean was a modest man whose connections with his students lasted for decades after they left his classroom.
"He fully understood the way that jazz as an art should be passed down to students," Harrison said. "He saw his role as bringing jazz from the 1950s and '60s and handing it down to artists of today."
McLean, a native of Harlem in New York City, grew up in a musical family, his father playing guitar in Tiny Bradshaw's band. McLean took up the soprano saxophone as a teen and quickly switched to the alto saxophone, inspired by his godfather's performances in a church choir, he told WBGO-FM in Newark, New Jersey, in an interview in 2004.
McLean went on to play with his friend Rollins from 1948-49 in a Harlem neighborhood band under the tutelage of pianist Bud Powell. Through Powell, McLean met bebop pioneer Charlie "Bird" Parker, who became a major influence on the young alto saxophonist.............

Sax Master Never Lost His Passion
April 1, 2006
I was always fond of telling folks that the great Jackie McLean - Hartford guy and jazz legend - is recognized as the greatest living alto saxophone player in the world.I was talking about the future of Hartford Thursday to political science professor Darryl McMiller's class at the University of Hartford. I reminded the students that McLean, director of UHart's Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, was one of the campus' premiere assets. He brought the university cultural cachet and worldwide jazz credibility in his three decades there. At the same time, McLean and wife, Dollie, became Hartford's first couple of the arts. They founded the Artists Collective, and opened a sterling building on Albany Avenue, a few blocks from campus. Hundreds of city and suburban children are trained there each year.................

roryshock: Billy Ray: A Chimp Accused -- Part 2

i wasn't going to post anything on this story

the story of the farmington teenagers drinking at the home of dawn and paul bracone. however, i had NO idea the parents of some of the kids at the party were stonewalling the police. what a bunch of asswipes. if it were MY parents they would make me take my lumps. if i DID it, I'D HAVE TO OWN UP TO IT. they taught me not only manners but they TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE AN HONORABLE PERSON. because one is rich (devonwood has homes that are BEYOND HUGE) doesn't make one above the law. (i was NO angel when i was younger [well i'm still not come to think of it] but as i said, i was and am honorable. i drank well before the legal age and i did OTHER things too that perhaps i shouldn't have done. if i effed up, i OWNED up-and i still do)

here is a column from rick green in today's courant

Parents Go Silent On Tipsy Kids
Rick Green
March 31 2006
When he first heard about the now infamous high school beer blast in the ritzy Devonwood subdivision - with boozy photos of teenagers posted on the Internet - Farmington Police Chief James V. Rio figured he had a slam dunk. Here was a chance for the whole community, and not just the cops, to send a clear message that parents have no business hosting parties serving liquor to minors, especially young people who aren't their children. Not so fast, chief. It seems preventing the next drunken tragedy might not be as important as some privileged parents' desire to keep their kids' records spotless.During the weeks after the Devonwood debacle, when police started contacting parents of students identified as party-goers at the home of Paul and Dawn Bracone on Jan. 13, they were stonewalled.Silence, in a town still grieving over its last teenage drunken-driving fatality two years ago."Three or four weeks into this, my guys are striking out. We are getting the runaround," Rio said. "I'm like, what's going on? This shouldn't be."No, it shouldn't, particularly since Farmington FOCUS, a coalition of community leaders and parents, has been working to promote more discussion about teenagers and alcohol."Kids are not naive," Farmington Superintendent of Schools Robert Villanova told me. "The danger is that kids get the message that even bad choices can be fixed by influential and assertive parents."Despite the obstacles, Farmington police pushed to investigate a weeks-old beer party, one where nobody ended up dead because they drank too much and tried to drive."Some of the people [we] really thought would come forward, didn't," Rio said. One parent even told police that "my kid isn't going to talk unless you give him immunity."Some parents "are teaching their kids the wrong message. It is not supporting any of the efforts in town to reduce this," Rio said. "They feel as long as they've emphasized safe rides and don't overdo it, to use moderation and `call me if you get too drunk' - they feel comfortable with that."Rio doesn't. In a town full of influential and assertive parents, he's pushing back........

Obama rallies state Democrats, throws support behind Lieberman
By Stephanie Reitz, Associated Press Writer March 31, 2006

HARTFORD, Conn. --U.S. Sen. Barack Obama rallied Connecticut Democrats at their annual dinner Thursday night, throwing his support behind mentor and Senate colleague Joe Lieberman.
Obama, an Illinois Democrat who is considered a rising star in the party, was the keynote speaker at the annual Jefferson Jackson Bailey Dinner.
Lieberman, Connecticut's junior senator, is under fire from some liberal Democrats for his support of the Iraq War. He was key in booking Obama, who routinely receives more than 200 speaking invitations each week.
Some at Thursday's dinner said that while they were pleased with Lieberman's success in bringing Obama to Connecticut, they still consider Lieberman uncomfortably tolerant of the Bush administration..........

An East Hartford teen has a much shorter hairstyle - 30 inches shorter, in fact - thanks to her penchant for helping others. After hairstylist Andrea Grondin at Shampoo One made the big cut March 2, Serra Borawski, 14, mailed her hair to Locks of Love, an orgaization that provides wigs to poor kids."I was getting tired of my hair. It was extremely long," said Borawski. "I never wanted to cut it before."Looking on was Serra's mom, Lisa Whatmore, and her best friend, Rebecca Puretz, 14. Her brother, who thought it was "cool" recorded the haircut on a videotape.Borawski, a student at East Hartford High School also studies creative writing, poetry and fiction writing at the Academy of the Arts in Hartford. HARTFORD, Conn. --U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman is taking his re-election campaign to the radio airwaves, unveiling his first advertisement in this year's election.
The spot touts the veteran Democrat's environmental record and his efforts to protect Long Island Sound and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
"We have a great story and we're going to tell it," said Lieberman's campaign manager, Sean Smith. "This is just the beginning of reminding people of a guy who has fought and delivered for the people of Connecticut."
Lieberman is facing his first Democratic challenge as a senator. Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont has vowed to take the race to a primary if he does not win the party nomination on May 20. Paul Streitz, a 63-year-old Darien resident, is seeking the Republican nomination.......

House arrestfor attack cat
Fairfield neighbors terrorized by Lewis
DANIEL TEPFER dtepfer@ctpost.com Connecticut Post Online
A ferocious feline terrorized a quiet Fairfield neighborhood, to the point that residents are seeking help from the law to stop the so-called "Terrorist of Sunset Circle."
Lewis, a 5-year-old, black-and-white longhaired cat, attacked at least a half-dozen people on the cul-de-sac and even took on the local Avon lady, neighbors say.
"He looks like Felix the Cat and has six toes on each foot each with a long claw," Sunset Circle resident Janet Kettman said. "They are formidable weapons."
Kettman said Lewis attacked her twice.
"I was walking along the sidewalk when he sprang at me. I never saw it coming, but that's how it often is. He comes at you from behind, springs and wraps himself around your legs, biting and scratching," she said. "The last time I had three bites and eight scratches and I ended up at the walk-in clinic.
"The Avon lady was getting out of her car when Lewis attacked her from behind," Kettman said. "She ended up going to the hospital."...

....I've tried to tell them to just stay away from Lewis and he will stay away from you; this has caused complete havoc for me," said Cisero, who has applied to the court for accelerated rehabilitation — for the cat...........

......
But Bachtig sees a more sinister side to the feline.
"The neighborhood is afraid of this cat," Bachtig said. "Lewis will stare you down, and you never know how he will react." ....

Lamont to pull out all stops in 'grassroots' campaign for Senate

By Don Michak , Journal Inquirer
Edward "Ned" Lamont, the Greenwich cable executive challenging three-term U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, says he is pursuing a two-pronged "grassroots" strategy to secure a place on the Democratic primary ballot. In a Journal Inquirer interview, Lamont said Friday that he not only would seek the support of 15 percent of the delegates at his party's state convention in May, but also attempt to petition his way onto the primary ballot by gathering the signatures of least 15,000 Democrats.
A wealthy man whose great-grandfather was chairman of the J.P. Morgan investment bank, Lamont estimated that his Senate bid could end up costing $10 million or more and said he was prepared to "put some money on the table now" to prime the campaign cash pump.He declined to say exactly how much of his own fortune he was prepared to expend, but emphasized that he would spend whatever it cost so that he, rather than Lieberman, would define his candidacy from the start."I'm no Jon Corzine," Lamont said, referring to the New Jersey governor and former U.S. senator who spent millions of dollars he earned as chairman of the Goldman Sachs investment firm on his and other political campaigns. "But I'm going to do enough to get this off to a really good start and we're going to defend ourselves."Lamont said he already was weary of being described simply as a "Greenwich millionaire" or single-issue candidate concerned only with opposing the war in Iraq.He said that after appearing before several Democratic town committees across the state, "people aren't asking me about the details of an exit strategy for Iraq anymore," but rather about health care and the problem-plagued Medicare prescription drug benefit in particular..........

a damn good start to my day!

i ran into dottie and cathy and eddie this morning. they were leaving work as i was driving into work (i heard them before i saw them of course even though i had my music cranking - taj mahal). so i stopped and chatted a bit. they were insisting i come by dottie's to play something called cranium. that certainly would have been an adventure, but i did have to get on my way. as i was leaving, cathy yelled out,"i love you a rose is a rose. i love you because you're beautiful at 3:00 am!" how cool is that?????????

dudleytown, connecticut

Dudleytown Road as it looks today

i came across this website and thought it quite interesting. some local lore......

Note from the Connecticut State Police: Those who go, or attempt to go to Dudleytown will be arrested for trespassing and/or parking. The fines start at $75.00 per person and rapidly increase.

In northwestern Connecticut within the town of Cornwall, in the shadow of three mountains, lies the remains of Dudleytown. The small hamlet holds accounts of ghostly tales, demons, unexplained events, and curses coupled with over 400 years of British and American history -- including ties to King Henry VIII, Horace Greeley, General Heman Swift, and General George Washington.Today, only the cellar holes and a few foundations remain. The roads have become forest trails that hikers and ghost hunters still traverse, regardless of warnings of evils spirits, and many claim the woods become strangely silent -- the birds and bugs that sing and call during a hike up to Dudleytown don’t follow into the hamlet.Dudleytown was founded by Thomas Griffis, who was the first to settle in the area, but it was three Dudley brothers who moved there a few years later for whom the land would be named. It was these brothers who also allegedly brought over a curse from England that has plagued the land ever since. The CurseAll Dudleys can trace their heritage back to a Saxon named Dudd, who was titled Duke of Mercia and died in 725 A.D. It was Dudd’s land that would eventually become the site of the Dudley castle. An old English word for land was “leigh,” so the area was called Dudd’s leigh. Many centuries later, when the taking of a surname became necessary, some people took a name based on their occupation (such as Smith or Baker) and others took their surname based on the land they came from, i.e., Dudley. The story and curse of Dudleytown actually begins in England in the year 1510. Edmund Dudley was beheaded for plotting to overthrow King Henry VIII. At the time of the beheading, a curse was allegedly placed on the Dudleys for their treason. The curse states all Dudleys from Edmund Dudley’s lineage would find themselves surrounded by horrors. Edmund Dudley’s son, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, followed in his father’s footsteps and also tried to overthrow the crown by marrying his son, Guilford Dudley, to Lady Jane Grey (the original “queen for a day”)..........

a great article on my home away from home: the half door

CHRIS GALLANT pours a Guinness the proper way at the Half Door on Sisson Avenue. (JOHN LONG)

Half Door Goes For Authenticity, 'Perfect Pour'
March 16, 2006 By LYNNE TUOHY, Courant Staff Writer

Shawn Skehan, co-owner of Half Door on Sisson Avenue in Hartford, said it takes more than Guinness on tap and an Irish flag out front to be an Irish pub."It's the feeling of being comfortable and at home and becoming a regular," said Skehan, who cut his teeth in the bar and restaurant business at this very location, in its former incarnation as the Cool Moose. He took it over nearly seven years ago.
The Half Door whispers comfort, from the cushions piled on a stone bench to the weathered booths and black-and-white photographs of Irish scenes. The bar rounds at one end to a circle, facilitating conversation. The pub is full of Irish knickknacks and artifacts from Ireland that friends and relatives have given Skehan, who has one set of Irish grandparents. He has yet to visit the island himself, but those who have tell him he has gotten it right......

David M. Kahn, the executive director of the Connecticut Historical Society Museum, is stepping down in May to take a job in New Orleans as the director of the Louisiana State Museum.Kahn, who has headed the city museum for more than nine years, said that the opportunity to move to New Orleans and help a historic institution rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was an assignment he could not pass up
I've had a long-term interest in New Orleans and Louisiana history and culture," Kahn said.He acquired a personal collection of 25 rare, first-edition books on Louisiana history, and said he has family there. "There really isn't any other circumstance under which I can imagine leaving Hartford," he said. i'm a smoker

i'm not proud of it, but i am what i am.

i won't buy butts in walgreens any longer. they DEMAND an id. by the way, i am WELL over the age of 30 and YES they DEMANDED MY id on ALL of the occassions i bought cigarettes there. not only do they LOOK at the id, they enter the date of birth into their registers. so i'm just not going to stop at walgreens for ANYTHING. they have lost my bid-nez because they invaded my privacy (i understand the need to card people buying certain items. however, when one is MY AGE, ONE DOESN'T NEED TO BE CARDED. and no, i'm NOT flattered)

now it seems cvs will be doing the same using the age 27 as a cut off. now we'll see if i get asked for id or not. not only am i well over that age, i LOOK LIKE I'M WELL OVER THAT AGE.

CVS reaches agreement with 42 states on tobacco sales
By Ray Henry, Associated Press Writer March 15, 2006

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --CVS Corp. has reached an agreement with Connecticut, 41 other states and the District of Columbia by promising to strengthen practices that keep minors from buying tobacco products.
Under the voluntary settlement, the pharmacy chain agreed to check the identities of customers who attempt to purchase tobacco products if they look younger than 27.
CVS officials also agreed not to use self-service displays or vending machines to sell tobacco products and to train employees on state and local laws regulating tobacco sales.
The Woonsocket-based company also must hire an independent monitor to check its compliance at 5,400 stores nationwide. CVS officials did not disclose the cost of implementing the agreement.

Lamont Opens Senate Fight Calls Lieberman `Republican Lite'
By MARK PAZNIOKAS Courant Staff Writer March 14 2006
Ending two months of exploratory campaigning, Ned Lamont debuted Monday as a full-fledged challenger to Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, promising a debate on the war in Iraq and a fight for the soul of the Democratic Party.Lamont, 52, a Greenwich cable television entrepreneur with deep pockets and liberal politics, promised a hard challenge from the left for a Democratic nomination that has gone to Lieberman without opposition since 1988.Lieberman's support for invading Iraq may be the catalyst for a challenge to a three-term incumbent whose candidacy he once supported financially, but Lamont said his differences with the senator go deeper than the war.He described Lieberman - an iconic politician who was the first Jew on a presidential ticket as the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000 - as a "Republican Lite" and "George Bush's favorite Democrat," too cozy with the GOP and too distant from his Democratic roots."We're going to fight for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party," Lamont told more than 100 supporters at the Old State House. "With your passion, your enthusiasm, the grass roots, the Net roots - we're going to show people on a hot day in August that we can win. We can win not by being Republican Lite, but by being proud Democrats."A primary would be held Aug. 8. Lamont is expected to qualify for it easily, either by winning support from 15 percent of the delegates to a nominating convention May 20 or by gathering signatures from 2 percent of registered Democrats.Lieberman's campaign monitored the announcement and quickly accused Lamont of negative campaigning, signaling that the senator views Lamont as a serious threat in a Democratic primary, where the voters tend to be liberal........

follow up on the ('former') taliban member attending yale

i am FAR removed from the right, so you cannot classify me as 'one of those' BUT i still have issues with this man attending yale (and being able to FLY in the united states when some of our OWN citizens cannot and NO ONE WILL SAY WHY)

it is NOT because he is muslim either. it's because of his affiliation (former or OTHERWISE and i have my doubts about the former part) WITH THE TALIBAN

From Taliban To Yale Man Enrollment Of Group's Former Ambassador Draws Outrage
By KIM MARTINEAU And PENELOPE OVERTON Courant Staff Writers March 9 2006
NEW HAVEN -- As a former ambassador for the Taliban, Rahmatullah Hashemi was a spokesman for a hated regime. He's now a freshman at Yale University and depending on your politics, he is either a symbol of what Yale is doing right, in trying to build bridges to the Muslim world, or he's proof that the nation's elite universities have taken diversity too far.Two weeks ago, Rahmatullah appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine, in a long narrative that traced his life from minding his father's shoe store to becoming a Taliban ambassador and then traveling to Yale to better himself with an Ivy League education. The story humanized a man who had been an apologist for the Taliban's mistreatment of women and the destruction of Afghanistan's cultural heritage.Since Rahmatullah, now 27, was thrust in the national spotlight, political conservatives have been on the attack. Fox News has dubbed Rahmatullah the "Ivy League terrorist," and a columnist for The Wall Street Journal has compared him to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. A group of Yale graduates has taken their alma mater to task. Two have launched a campaign to "Give Yale the Finger," urging alumni to send press-on nails to Yale as a reminder of the fingernails the Taliban tore from women who wore nail polish."Yale is not a right," said Brian Wesley Cook, 22, of Fairfield. "Yale is a privilege. Not everyone is entitled to that privilege. We are talking about the mouthpiece of one of the most despicable regimes in history."Another alumnus, former Army Capt. Flagg Youngblood, has criticized Yale for welcoming a former enemy on campus while continuing to block military training. Youngblood works for Young America's Foundation, which promotes conservative ideas on college campuses...........

Lamont to announce candidacy for Lieberman's Senate seat
March 8, 2006
HARTFORD, Conn. --Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont will formally announce next week that he will challenge U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman in the August Democratic primary, his campaign said Wednesday.
Lamont, 52, who has already taken steps toward becoming an official challenger to the three-term incumbent, will make the announcement Monday at the Old State House in Hartford.
The founder and president of cable television company Lamont Digital Systems and former newspaper editor said he is dissatisfied with a number of issues, including the war in Iraq, access to affordable health care and economic policies that provide education and good jobs.
"This president plays on our fears, not our hopes," Lamont said in a written statement. "In too many ways our country is going off course. And Connecticut's Sen. Lieberman is doing nothing to stop it -- and is in fact supporting many of the president's misguided policies."
Lieberman has come under fire from members of his own party for his support of the war in Iraq.........

in order to be fair (re: the co high school teachers bush comments)....

here's something from the OTHER side

Settlement over peace letters
March 7, 2006
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. --A teacher who said she was fired from a Roman Catholic elementary school for refusing to have her students write letters protesting the war in Iraq has reached an out of court settlement.
Bonnie Allen Lazor sued the Diocese of Bridgeport after she dismissed in March 2003. She said her firing came after she refused to instruct her second-grade students to write letters to President Bush.
"It was settled to the mutual satisfaction of the parties," Lazor's lawyer, Anthony Pantuso told the Connecticut Post. He would not disclose the amount of the settlement.....

Lieutenant Governor calls for resignation of victim advocate
By Susan Haigh, Associated Press Writer March 7, 2006
HARTFORD, Conn. --The state's victim advocate should resign over comments he made against an emergency contraception bill being considered by lawmakers, Lt. Gov. Kevin Sullivan said Tuesday.
Sullivan, a Democrat, said James Papillo crossed the line when he spoke at a public hearing in opposition to a bill that would require all hospitals, including the state's four Catholic hospitals, to offer rape victims access to the morning-after pill to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.
Papillo, an ordained deacon in the Roman Catholic Church, told the legislature's Public Health Committee that the bill is unnecessary and is an assault on religious freedom. He also accused victims rights groups that support the bill of having an anti-Catholic agenda.
The Archdiocese of Hartford has said it would oppose any legislation requiring hospitals to administer contraceptives in cases where an egg already has been fertilized or ovulation has occurred. Catholics believe life begins at conception.
"He can have all the strong opinions that he wants personally and privately, but he has an obligation to leave them outside the door of his office and to leave them outside of his job," said Sullivan. "Instead, yesterday, he abused his office, he abused the constitution that he swore to uphold."
Sullivan, joined by Rep. Denise Merrill, D-Mansfield, said Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell should immediately replace Papillo....

once again i offer my apologies to mr hoy (for thinking the worst of him)

Mother, boyfriend arrested in attack on 6-year-old
March 7, 2006
HARTFORD, Conn. --After wrongly implicating another man, a woman and her boyfriend were charged Tuesday with beating her 6-year-old daughter so badly that her lower left arm had to be amputated, city police said.
Yajaira Rodriguez, 24, and Jose Graciani, 23, were arraigned in Hartford Superior Court on six counts each of first-degree assault and assault on a mentally disabled person and one count each of risk of injury to a minor, police said. Bond was set at $750,000 for both.
Rodriguez's daughter, Natasha Santiago, was born with a rare defect that has left her mentally retarded, unable to speak and unable to walk on her own. The six assault counts were based on the number of fractures she suffered, the Journal Inquirer of Manchester reported Tuesday.
Police said Natasha was beaten in December. After the incident, police said Rodriguez lied in a sworn statement to authorities by implicating her ex-boyfriend, Jaime Hoy.
Authorities said Tuesday that they vacated the arrest warrant against Hoy, who had contacted police to say he had been deported years ago from Canada to his native Colombia and was not in Hartford when the girl was injured.
Rodriguez, a mother of four, was charged with falsely reporting an incident and other crimes in January and had been free on $10,000 bond since her arrest.
She had claimed Hoy broke into her apartment armed with a gun and refused to let her check on her children for three days..;..................

i am NOT attacking the church

i'm attacking archaic beliefs AND some people with a penis who can NEVER know what it's like to be pregnant and others who get in the way of MY VERY LEGAL DECISION to take a morning after pill or not. seems like a conflict of itnerest to have a 'victims advocate' who will NOT give you ALL of the choices. and by the way, MOST women do not want to see a man as their victim advocate while at the hospital after reporting a rape. believe me i know. (i do admire him for being an advocate though, don't misunderstand that please)

State victim advocate opposes morning after pill legislation
By Susan Haigh, Associated Press Writer March 6, 2006
HARTFORD, Conn. --State Victim Advocate James F. Papillo called on lawmakers Monday to oppose a bill requiring Connecticut hospitals, including Catholic institutions, to provide the "morning after pill" to rape victims.
Papillo, an ordained deacon in the Roman Catholic Church, also accused private victims' rights groups of attacking the church and religious freedoms.
He questioned any need for the bill and told the legislature's Public Health Committee that he has never received a complaint from a rape victim who was denied the pill from a Catholic hospital. Papillo has held the job for more than six years.
"What's being proposed here is a solution in search of a problem. Victims are not being denied services," he said, adding that Catholic hospitals refer victims to places where they can obtain the pills.
Papillo, who told legislators he was speaking as the victim advocate and not as a deacon, accused private advocacy organizations of using crime victims to further an anti-Catholic agenda.
"I see this for what it is. It is not a victims' rights issue. It is not a victims' services issue," Papillo said. "Victims here are being used as a hook to further an agenda they are hiding ... The issue is an attack on the Catholic institutions."
Officials from Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Services Inc., which is lobbying for the legislation, said they were shocked by Papillo's remarks. The 24-year-old group runs a rape crisis hot line and accompanies rape victims to emergency rooms, among other services, and is not a political organization, said Laura Cordes, director of policy and advocacy for ConnSACS.........

the morning after pill

DOES NOT CAUSE AN ABORTION. IT IS AN (EMERGENCY) CONTRACEPTIVE. it PREVENTS conception. if you ARE pregnant and take this pill it will NOT effect your pregnancy.

if you don't want to take a contraceptive DON'T. no one is forcing you. if a woman is raped and taken to the hospital, she is NOT going to be thinking 'oh don't take me here or there they don't offer the morning after pill'. she is going to be thinking HELP ME. that's all just HELP ME. part of that help is being allowed to have the morning after pill IF that is what SHE decides. it's up to HER not YOU.

Protest held in Waterbury over proposed Morning After Pill bill

(Waterbury-WTNH, Mar. 5, 2006 6:35 PM) _ Should a Catholic hospital be forced to offer the morning after pill?
That's a question generating plenty of debate.
This afternoon members of Connecticut's Right to Life group rallied in Waterbury.
They are opposed to a bill that would require Catholic hospital to provide emergency contraception victims of rape.
by News Channel 8's Jamie Muro
It stands to be one of the most controversial topics discussed during this legislative session in Hartford. Rape victims in the state may soon be able to obtain emergency contraception at any hospital, including Catholic hospitals, if a bill being considered is passed. ...........

Rivals Blast Rell Stance

Catholic Hospitals, Rape Victims At Issue
By MARK PAZNIOKAS Courant Staff Writer March 4 2006
Gov. M. Jodi Rell's defense of the right of Catholic hospitals in the state to withhold emergency contraceptives from rape victims was criticized Friday by the two Catholic mayors running for governor.Stamford Mayor Dannel P. Malloy held a press conference with his wife, who runs a rape crisis center, to denounce Rell's position as "completely unacceptable, unreasonable and, quite frankly, shocking."New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. issued a statement equally critical of Rell's suggestion that rape victims could get the emergency contraceptive, known as Plan B, at a non-Catholic hospital."Patients don't always choose what hospital to seek care at, and to expect a woman who has been raped and examined and tormented to go from hospital to hospital to receive treatment is ludicrous," DeStefano said.Malloy and DeStefano, who are vying for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, each endorsed pending legislation that would require all hospitals to offer emergency contraceptives to rape victims.Earlier this week, Rell said she was comfortable with the status quo..............

From Taliban mouthpiece to Ivy League undergraduate
Tim Reid, New Haven, Connecticut March 04, 2006
SECONDS before meeting the Taliban's former spokesman amid the venerable towers of Yale, to talk about his astonishing journey from Mullah Mohammed Omar's adviser to Ivy League undergraduate, I wonder if I will recognise him.Suddenly, there he is, walking towards me, and it is unmistakably Rahmatullah. Gone are the dark turban, flowing beard and baggy trousers in which he travelled the world in early 2001 as the Taliban's "roving envoy", defending the Islamic zealots' treatment of women, their destruction of the ancient Buddha statues of Bamiyan, and their determination to keep Osama bin Laden as a guest of Afghanistan.
He is now wearing chinos and Nike trainers, with a trimmed beard and rucksack full of books, and looks worried. A man is filming him. Rahmatullah takes out his mobile to call the police.
It has been a stressful week for Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi, 27, who met bin Laden in his native Kandahar in the late 1990s, having just become the Taliban's deputy foreign secretary at 22.
After eight months at Yale, in New Haven, Connecticut, where even his closest friends did not know his past, the US press has revealed all. Some of the reaction has been hostile. Rahmatullah fears for his wife and two children in the Pakistani border town of Quetta......
