from one of my favorite blogs. the cool justice report by andy thibault (even though this article is not by andy). andy is quite the renaissance man. i've never met him, but he and i both live in connecticut. i'm in the process of reading one of his books right now, law and justice in every day life. it's fascinating. i've told him i love reading the book, but the stories are scaring the HELL out of me (they deal for the most part with connecticut cases).

andy has taken up causes (i don't know if that's the correct terminology. i don't know if HE would describe it that way) from
billy smolinski to avery doninger AND LOTS in between.

if i was ever in a jam, i hope i'd have someone like andy at my back

Column: Top Connecticut Lawyer Delineates Ethics Rules On Telling The Truth

Liar, Liar Pants on Fire: The Rules For Lawyers Have Changed" The lawyer is mandated to remedy the falsity, even if it means informing the court that the client is lying ... Thus it is not only truth by others, but as importantly, truth from attorneys that is mandated."By RICHARD MEEHAN The Cool Justice Report http://www.cooljustice.blogspot.com/

EDITOR'S NOTE: This column is available for reprint courtesy of The Cool Justice Report,
http://cooljustice.blogspot.com/
The Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC) are the Bible governing lawyer ethics. Despite the cynicism of some wags, we do try to police ourselves as a profession and adhere to a code that places respect for the process above all other considerations.Lawyers have always had an obligation to be truthful with the court. Overzealous representation should not lead to an attorney misrepresenting the facts or misleading a court on issues of legal authorities. Traditionally, the RPC required that an attorney not participate actively in presenting false testimony before a tribunal. That rule has been amended to demand even more of lawyers.Rule 1.6 of the RPC requires lawyers to maintain client confidences. The sanctity of the attorney client privilege is no less than the sanctity of the seal of the confessional between priests and penitents. But what is the lawyer's responsibility when he learns that a client has given false testimony? Does the privilege mandate attorney silence and allow a subversion of the truth finding purpose of the judicial process? No.................. (read the rest at the link above)

supervisory assistant state's attorney stephen preleski who charged (the ALLEGED) dog torturer with a crime that carries a stiff sentence. it's about time. animals suffer. there was NO justification for what was done to that dog. if indeed the dog bit the child (and i'm believing she did. HOWEVER, she was in a cage and from what i understand was ALMOST ALWAYS IN A CAGE), i blame the adults FULLY. i could accept having the dog put down (humanely) if she was vicious. i cannot and will not accept having holes drilled in her head. may the person responsible for this (the one accused is pleading NOT GUILTY BY THE WAY) serve the MAXIMUM time allowed by law (and have this stay with him for the rest of his life)
Animal Cruelty Defendant Denounced
Protesters Attend Court Hearing For Man Accused Of Drilling Holes In Pit Bull's Head

By DON STACOM Courant Staff Writer
BRISTOL — - Outraged by allegations that Severino Cruz drilled holes in a pit bull's head, dozens of animal rights advocates protested Thursday morning as Cruz appeared in Superior Court.Cruz, 32, pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges in a brief hearing, then walked with his lawyer through a crowd of angry protesters who shouted "killer." Cruz was initially charged last month with cruelty to animals and disorderly conduct after police in Plainville determined he bored holes into the dog's head because the dog bit his 8-year-old son. Supervisory Assistant State's Attorney Stephen Preleski on Thursday added a new, more serious charge against him: maliciously maiming or killing an animal. If Cruz is convicted of that felony charge, he could be fined $5,000 and sent to prison for up to five years."I reviewed the case and charged Mr. Cruz with what I feel are appropriate charges," Preleski said later. ....

Lieberman says some waterboarding OK
By PETER URBAN
Article Last Updated: 02/15/2008 01:39:42 AM EST
WASHINGTON — Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman reluctantly acknowledged Thursday that he does not believe waterboarding is torture, but believes the interrogation technique should be available only under the most extreme circumstances.
Lieberman was one of 45 senators who voted Wednesday in opposition to a bill that would limit the CIA to the 19 interrogation techniques outlined in the Army field manual. That manual prohibits waterboarding, a method where detainees typically are strapped to a bench and have water poured into their mouth and nose making them feel as if they will drown.
The Senate passed the measure.
"We are at war," Lieberman said. "I know enough from public statements made by Osama bin Laden and others as well as classified information I see to know the terrorists are actively planning, plotting to attack us again. I want our government to be able to gather information again within both the law and Geneva Convention."
In the worst case scenario — when there is an imminent threat of a nuclear attack on American soil — Lieberman said that the president should be able to certify the use of waterboarding on a detainee suspected of knowing vital details of the plot.......

if you're in the bristol area tomorrow

february 14th, why don't you show up at the hearing of saverino cruz. he (allegedly) did something so horrid to one of his dogs, it's beyond belief. the following is from susan at ourcompanions.org

Dear Animal Loving Friends,

Many people have been horrified by the recent cruelty case in Plainville, CT in which Saverino Cruz took a power drill and brutally drilled several holes into a dog's head.
http://plainville.ctcitizens.com/story/police-charge-two-men-animal-cruelty

Our Companions has received many calls and emails from heart-sick animal lovers asking what they can do to help pursue justice for this unthinkable crime. We have been in touch with the Plainville Animal Control Department and have been advised that there are ways that you can make a difference.

1) Attend the Hearing that is scheduled for Thursday, February 14th at 9AM at Bristol Superior Court. (131 North Main Street, Bristol, CT 06010 ). A large show of public support to prosecute Mr. Cruz to the fullest extent of the law would help make an important statement about the serious nature of this crime.

2) Write to the Prosecutor Steven Preleski (same address as the Superior Court) and encourage him to seek the maximum punishment for this crime.

3) Consider adopting a pitbull. The Plainville Shelter has several loving pitbulls that are in desperate need of a home. You can help this very misunderstood and needy breed by opening your heart and home to a homeless dog. Check out Lucky, just one of the many sweet and loving pitbulls that desperately needs a good home.
http://search.pet finder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9935606

4) Please forward this email to your animal loving friends and encourage them to also take action!

Thank you for caring and I hope you can attend the hearing on 2-14-08.

i thought they said the devil was NOT going to speak

Karl Rove To Speak February 11
Edward J. Shanahan, Headmaster of Choate Rosemary Hall, released the following statement at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Monday, January 28, 2008:
"I am pleased to announce that Karl Rove will be coming to the Choate Rosemary Hall campus on Monday, February 11, 2008 to speak with our students.
Mr. Rove originally accepted our invitation to speak at Choate’s commencement in early June. However, after meeting with our seniors last week and reading their emails regarding this subject, it was quite clear to me that our students much preferred a visit during which they might engage Mr. Rove in some thoughtful conversation about his experiences in public life. In addition, both the students and I had some concerns that, because of the public nature of our commencement exercises, we ran the risk that their graduation day might be disrupted by outsiders. When I relayed that information to Mr. Rove over this past weekend, he graciously understood our students’ interests and our concerns.
In Mr. Rove’s words: ‘I would not want 12 minutes..........

for the most part

i have no issues with the hartford police department. EXCEPT their issuance of PARKING TICKETS. my very first ticket ever (not THIS storm by the way) was for parking on a hartford street during a (practically non-existant) snow storm. by the way, the snow plow(s) NEVER came down the street that day. NEVER, and it is a busy street with an entrance and exit to the highway on it. so i KNOW how these people feel. i was going to take all sorts of pictures of OTHER non-ticketed cars on practically every street in hartford, but i didn't. i just didn't want to go downtown and argue. i'm glad these people DID

The city was prepared for a big snowfall. The parking ban was in place, and city police were enforcing it.But when the snowfall on Jan. 14 was less than expected, and a blizzard of parking tickets fell anyway, a lot of motorists took exception.More than 250 irritated people — a record-setting number, according to municipal officials — jammed the small lobby of the city's parking citation office Friday, coming to complain about the $99 tickets they got for parking on the street during a big-storm-turned-smaller-than-expected on Monday, Jan. 14...........

Once darling of the Dems, Lieberman's support booms among GOP

HARTFORD, Conn. -- During his four terms in the U.S. Senate, Joe Lieberman says he has visited more than 130 Connecticut diners to meet with constituents. But increasingly, more Republicans may be inclined to share a proverbial "cup of joe with Joe" than the Democrats for whom he'd been the party standard-bearer for decades. Lieberman, the Democrat-turned-independent who was his party's 2000 vice presidential nominee, is now viewed unfavorably by two of every three Connecticut Democrats polled during the Super Tuesday presidential primaries, according to exit poll data...........

west hartford taxes

this article is eye opening. why would ONE person's home go up 184% and another, whose house is HUGE and in an EXCLUSIVE neighborhood only go up an insignificant amout? the bigger home was worth more than the lesser home at the beginning, but at the end of the re-evaluation, it was worth LESS* than the smaller home in a less exclusive neighborhood? (my father's home went up an incredible amout as well. i don't have the info in front of me but if my mind serves me, i believe it went up almost as much as 184%). seems the RICH KEEP GETTING RICHER and the little peeps gotta pay the piper even though EVERYONE danced, not just them (*when i say worth less, i don't mean that literally. i mean it's TAXED at a lesser rate)
well mr kennedy, i do feel for you. i feel for my soon to be 81 year old father as well

Thursday, February 07, 2008 West Hartford Reval Madness Rates for a tiny house on the water go up 184 percent
Jennifer Abel
Some West Hartford residents think the town is jacking up property tax bills based on subjective factors, like the relative prettiness of a view from the backyard.
"They ran up the assessment because of my 'water view,'" said George Kennedy, who lives in the 2,100-square-foot Cape house where he spent his childhood. It's a nice house, but nothing spectacular, especially by West Hartford standards.
His three-quarter-acre lot hugs the edge of Woodridge Lake, which is 450 feet wide where Kennedy's land borders it. On the lake's opposite shore sits Tunxis Road, and if you like the way sunlight glitters off the windshield of tractor-trailers zooming down a busy thoroughfare, you'll agree the view from Kennedy's backyard is gorgeous........

do we really want our

local police departments to be migra? i know i sure as shite DO NOT. i want them to be POLICE NOT immigration enforcers.

i appear to be in the minority in the united states. i really don't hold immigration as top priority. i really don't hold with the notion immigrants (yes, even ILLEGAL ONES) are bringing our nation to it's knees. (guess who i hold responsible for THAT feat? yeah, king george and his ENTIRE COURT).

if we could just concentrate on GOOD SOLID POLICING - protecting and serving the public (ALL of the public) then the world would be a far better place. how about protecting us from domestic abuse? how about protecting us from home invasions (i really HATE that term. when the hell did we start using 'home invasion' any damn way???)? how about answering our 911
calls in a matter of seconds? how about assisting us in all the ways you are SUPPOSED to?

Connecticut City Plans to Team Its Police With Federal Immigration Agents
By JILL P. CAPUZZO

DANBURY, Conn. — When baseball season begins, Mayor Mark D. Boughton will probably throw out the first pitch again for this city’s Dominican baseball team. On Sundays, he sometimes can be found on the sidelines at the soccer games organized by many of the ethnic communities here. And he makes it a point to be at the annual Hajj festival held by the sizable Muslim population.
But on Wednesday night, Mr. Boughton, who governs a city of nearly 80,000 residents — 90,000 when illegal immigrants are included — and the Common Council are expected to approve a plan that would require the local police to work with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in rounding up workers who are in the country illegally.
“The intention is to target criminal aliens,” the mayor said in an interview. “It’s not going to be the horrible thing the opponents think it’s going to be. On the other side, it’s not the sweeps and roundups the far right want it to be.”......

Bishops Corner: Plans For Fresh Face
By KENNETH R. GOSSELIN
WEST HARTFORD
In 1953, Lord & Taylor opened its first store outside the New York area at a quiet crossroads known as Bishops Corner, bringing with it big-city glitz, glamour and fashion. The center created a retail buzz and drew shoppers from all over Greater Hartford. It spawned a wave of retail development and the rise of the suburban mall in the area as people and commerce headed out Albany Avenue from the city. Now, 55 years later, can this aging, tired shopping center create magic again — this time in a mature suburb? The owner of what was once Lord & Taylor — now a Marshalls — and a retail and office complex next door is expected to unveil plans as soon as this spring for a major redevelopment of the two properties, which could include the demolition of the half-empty Marshalls building and adjoining parking deck. The developer, Edens & Avant, isn't giving details. But early talks with town officials — who will help shape the plans — point to a walkable "town center" with small shops and one or two large anchor tenants. The project could cost as much as $100 million, town officials said.........

Louise Coleman felt remiss Wednesday morning as she stood outside Danielson Superior Court with five other protesters, each holding a greyhound on a leash. Last May and June, Coleman, director of the Hopkinton, Mass., dog adoption agency Greyhound Friends Inc., allowed Kevin Schneider, an acquaintance of hers, to adopt two greyhounds. She said it was a mistake that won’t happen again. Schneider pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of animal cruelty after being arrested Jan. 18 by Troop D in Danielson. His case was continued until March. According to Eva Longo of the Northeast Connecticut Council of Government’s Animal Control Division, Schneider, who lives in Watertown, Mass., dumped a dog on the side of Route 6 in Killingly after months of what appeared to be improper care of the animal.According to a written account from Michael McCann, president of The Greyhound Project, a Killingly man watched Oct. 27 as someone in a black sport utility vehicle let the dog out while the vehicle was still rolling...............

Karl Rove drops prep school speech
Karl Rove Withdraws From Conn. Prep School Commencement Speech After Students Protest

Following protests from students, former presidential adviser Karl Rove has withdrawn as this year's commencement speaker at a prestigious prep school, the school's headmaster said Monday. The choice of Rove as speaker for the June commencement at Choate Rosemary Hall had led some students to plan to walk out of the ceremony. Others had sought to bring comedian Stephen Colbert to campus for an alternate speech.
Instead of commencement, Rove now will speak at the school on Feb. 11, headmaster Edward J. Shanahan said. Shanahan said he will deliver the commencement address at the school, the alma mater of John F. Kennedy and Adlai Stevenson........

Karl Rove to be Class of ’08 Commencement Speaker
By Alexandra Cooper ’09
In an email to the Choate community, on Tuesday, January 15, Headmaster Ed Shanahan announced that Karl Rove will replace Senator John Warner as the commencement speaker on June 8th, 2008. Mr. Rove served as the former Deputy White House Chief of Staff under George W. Bush’s administration, and was a key player in Bush’s election as president. Before Rove worked for the current Bush administration, he spent much of his career as a political advisor for primarily Republican candidates, such as Senator John Ashcroft. Mr. Rove will join a long list of Commencement speakers that have included journalists such as Peter Jennings, politicians from both parties such as Dick Cheney (when he was Secretary of Defense) and Senator Chris Dodd. “We select speakers from all walks of life, with different points of view. That is what we should be doing as an educational institution. We should be putting in front of students and faculty a wide spectrum of ideas,” commented Headmaster Shanahan, “We have commencement speakers from outside of the school community so that someone comes in with a message for graduating students about the world that they are about to engage in. Karl Rove is somebody who has dedicated a significant portion of his life to service, and has been an extremely influential person.”........

Connecticut's Secret Prisoners Contract With Feds Codifies Secret Political Prison System AG’s office contests FOI Cover documents about federal detainee sheld in state prisons By Laura Schreier Hartford Business Journal Staff Writer 01/28/08
Federal officials admit they keep detainees in covert prisons around the world, most notably at Guantanamo Bay, where many were held for years before their names were released to the public. But it comes as a surprise to some state officials that federal detainees are also held, secretly, right here in Connecticut. It’s all part of a contract between state and federal authorities: In exchange for a per-inmate fee, state officials agree to house federal prisoners arrested by homeland security. Connecticut has had such a contract with the federal government since 1995, but it was only after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that new regulations clamped down on information about those prisoners. According to legal arguments by state Assistant Attorney General Henri Alexandre, state authorities are prohibited from releasing any information about the federal detainees held behind bars in Connecticut prisons. That means that Connecticut could be holding detainees at any time, without a formal charge, said Lisa Siegel, counsel with the state’s Freedom of Information Commission. “This is a surprise to all of us, that there are secret prisons [in the state],” Siegel said. “The real harm of this regulation is that people are held now — we can’t get any information on them.” ...........

Mayor: E-mail shows immigration raid timing wasn't coincidence
By John Christoffersen
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—An e-mail sent by local immigration officials to their agency head the day after the city adopted an ID program for illegal immigrants suggests the timing of a raid soon thereafter was not coincidental, the city's mayor said.
more stories like this
Regional Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers told agency Director Julie Myers in a June 5 e-mail that New Haven's Board of Aldermen had voted 25-1 the previous night to make the city the nation's first to offer illegal immigrants ID cards.
City officials said the cards would help immigrants better integrate into mainstream culture by allowing them access to bank accounts and other services.
On June 6, ICE agents swept through the city and detained an estimated 30 illegal immigrants. Critics contend the raid was retaliation for the adoption of the ID program, a charge the agency has steadfastly denied.
In the e-mail to Myers, obtained by The Associated Press through a federal Freedom of Information Act request, agents wrote that because of the recent vote, the raid would likely draw significant news coverage..........

EAST GRANBY, Conn. -- The clock is ticking for dozens of cats in East Granby that are facing a deadline with death. A woman caring for the cats is getting evicted, and if the animals don't get a new home by next week, they could be put-down. Holly Harris has rescued animals for more than two decades. In essence, she runs her own no-kill shelter of sorts. She spends her own money to vaccinate and fix the animals she takes in.
Recently though, the fire marshal deemed the apartment and barn in which she and the cats live unsafe and illegal. This means that she has only four days to find a good place for 50 cats to live.........

Disgraced ex-governor plans to take job in city with corrupt past

By John Christoffersen
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Former Gov. John G. Rowland, who resigned amid an impeachment probe and spent 10 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to a corruption charge, plans to take a job marketing his hometown of Waterbury, a city with its own history of political scandal.

more stories like thisWaterbury Mayor Michael J. Jarjura has offered him a job as the city's economic development coordinator, but not everyone thinks Rowland is the right fit for a city that has sent two previous mayors to jail.

Lieberman tapped to McCain 'leadership team' in Conn
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Sen. Joe Lieberman has been named a chairman of Republican presidential hopeful John McCain's state leadership team.Lieberman, an Independent who caucuses with Senate Democrats, has endorsed the Arizona senator and campaigned for him in Florida, Michigan, New Hampshire and South Carolina. He is heading McCain's Connecticut campaign with Republican Rep. Christopher Shays.George Jepsen, former state Democratic Party chairman who supported Ned Lamont's successful challenge of Lieberman in the 2006 Democratic primary, said Lieberman's endorsement of McCain is an affront to Democrats who believed Lieberman when he said two years ago that he was committed to helping put a Democrat in the White House in 2008.........

it is january 22nd. blog for choice day

Blog for Choice Day

and it is the anniversary of roe v. wade. this year we've been asked why we 'vote' pro choice. well i don't think of myself as 'voting' pro choice. i just think of myself as PRO CHOICE. NO, NOT PRO ABORTION. PRO CHOICE. there is a great difference. i don't advocate abortion. i do advocate birth control and reproductive EDUCATION.

however, when a woman chooses to have an abortion, it is her right to do so. it is her right to feel safe doing so. it is her right for that choice to remain PRIVATE if it is her decision to have it so. it is her right to have a choice if there are health reasons (hers or that of the fetus). it is her right to have a choice if there are circumstances which may make having a child a tragedy. it is her choice and should be respected. it is her choice and NOT some old white rich dude's choice. it is HER choice and not YOUR GOD'S choice.

in almost all cases it is not an easy choice. but it is HER choice to make. it is HER BODY and HER MIND AND HER HEART.

we must never let back room abortions take place again. we must protect this choice we have and not let it be taken away by those who speak false words and judge us as evil. (by the way even those that 'oppose' choice have had abortions. they keep it deeply hidden because of the stigma they perceive. they keep it deeply hidden because of how their families and their men will react. well we all know many many many women who have made the choice to terminate a pregnancy. and yes, they DO come from all walks of life. all religions and all political views)

it's MY choice and i'm not letting YOU or anyone else take it from me

ned lamont and benazir bhutto

i thought this was interesting. ned knew benazir from harvard and received a card (in the mail) from her after her death (of course it was mailed prior).

By CHRISTOPHER KEATING Capitol Bureau Chief

In the late 1980s, two college friends exchanged letters, congratulating each other on the political victories each had recently enjoyed. One had just been elected third selectman of Greenwich. The other had just been elected prime minister of Pakistan.

It was just a small event in the friendship of Democrat Ned Lamont and Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in Pakistan Dec. 27 as she attempted to regain power.About a week into the new year, Lamont received a late-arriving Christmas card from Bhutto, mailed days before she was killed, becoming the fourth member of her family to die as a result of political violence. The card read, "Praying for Peace in the World and Happiness for your Family in 2008."Lamont had not seen his old friend in four years — when they reminisced over lunch about their days together as undergraduates at Harvard, when she was known on campus as "Pinkie."..............

both of THESE 'men' should be in a cage

for the rest of their lives. this is one of THE worst cases i have ever heard about.

Plainville animal cruelty
by News Channel 8's Annie Rourke
Plainville (WTNH) _ Two brothers are charged in a horrifying case of animal abuse. This comes after a pet pit bull bites a young boy's arm.
A very disturbing case in Plainville. Police say, a little boy was taken to the hospital after being bitten on the arm by his uncle's pit bull. But it didn't end there. Now, that boy's father is behind bars, while his uncle is facing charges. And, the dog has been put down.
No one is home at the Farmington Avenue house in Plainville where the brothers live. Severino Cruz, 32, and 27-year-old Enrique Cruz were both arrested. This comes after a horrific crime occurred Sunday afternoon. A three-year-old pit bull, kept in a cage in the basement, got loose and bit Severino's 8-year-old son Nick.
Police say the bite was no severe but enough for him to get checked out.
"The dog bit the son Nick," Captain Peter Costanzo of the Plainville Police Department said. "At which point, Enrique took Nick to the hospital for treatment."
When the father heard about the attack, he took matters into his own hands. "Severino came home at that point in time and in a fit of rage, took a power drill and drilled the dog's head several times," Costanzo said.
The dog, back in the cage at this time, had no way to get away.
"He held the dog by his collar with his chain and drilled the holes in the dog," Costanzo noted................

i had NO idea witch hazel was a connecticut commodity

my mother, when i was a girl, touted it's benefits. i've used it all of my life. as a matter of fact, for a couple of years i STOPPED using it. i had some peeling of my skin on the sides of my nose. no matter how much i sloughed that skin on a DAILY BASIS, it just kept on peeling. the ONLY thing that helped it (and i tried EVERYTHING including prescriptions) was WITCH HAZEL.

i don't have any stock in the company. i don't work for the company. i don't know anyone that works for the company (to the best of my knowledge that is). i am not affiliated with the company in ANY way. i'm telling you all right now, GO GET SOME WITCH HAZEL AND USE IT EVERY DAY

By Daniel D'Ambrosio

On a crisp, cold afternoon in early December, Russ Galas fired up his Stihl chainsaw and revved the engine to full throttle, undercutting a tenuously leaning snag before dropping it expertly to the forest floor in the 24,000-acre Pachaug State Forest in eastern Connecticut, the state's largest forest.
It was the kind of maneuver that could result in a nasty gash to a body part, or worse, for a less experienced hand. But Galas, 45, has spent many hours in the woods with a chainsaw over the past eight years, cutting witch hazel for his friend Mike Dzurnak.
Dzurnak, 52, whose father and grandfather both cut witch hazel in these woods before him, is one of about eight "brush cutters" in the state who harvest Connecticut's near-monopoly on the worldwide supply of this plant, prized for its qualities as a natural astringent. This year, Dzurnak will supply some 300 tons of chipped witch hazel to American Distilling & Mfg. Inc. in nearby East Hampton, cutting from November to March...........

important request

the west hartford police (officers association) are collecting donations (of personal items) and notes for two of their own. one will be deployed to iraq (officer samuel ferrucci ) and one is in afghanistan (lieutenant daniel coppinger)

so, if you live in town, why not drop a few items off? i have adopted a few soldiers over the past few years from soldier's angels. i know how much care packages mean to someone who is deployed.
you can bring non-perishable food items (NO pork products though - beef jerky is good, powdered drink mixes, candy, etc). toiletries (deodorants, baby wipes, hand cream, etc. please put them in a ziplock bag though - just in case.......). magazines and books and puzzle, sudoku books are good. dvds and cds.how about playing cards, cribbage boards....
if you need more ideas, go to the soldier's angels website. they have a BUNCH of good ideas for care packages.

from the west hartford news:

a few words from ned

on the presidential race. i like obama. i like edwards as well. who i REALLY want for president of course already WAS elected president. however, he decided not to run (i hope just for THIS time), al gore.

Why I'm Supporting Barack Obama

When I decided to run for Senate, I did so because I deeply believed that the citizens of Connecticut were yearning to see fundamental changes in our politics - changes that would make government work for them again.

Today, with our Presidential primary in Connecticut less than a month away, I am announcing my support of Barack Obama for President because I am convinced that his forward-looking, progressive vision provides the best chance to enact meaningful reforms in the way Washington works.

Sen. Obama has the tone and temperament to bring out the best in our people and our nation, and to bring new coalitions together in support of the progressive policies we all want to see enacted. His campaign has already reflected this, not only by bringing hundreds of thousands of new voters of all ages to the polls, but by inspiring so many who are new to politics to become activists as well.........

please watch out for your pets

this happened in griswold, but it could happen ANYWHERE (including west hartford - where i personally HAVE SEEN a coyote)

wtnh.com/global/story.asp?s=7596872
by News Channel 8's Bob Wilson
Griswold (WTNH) _ A beloved pet's run-in with a coyote has changed one family forever. The attack came right in front of the dog's owner.
It's being called a miracle tonight. Lilly, an 8-year-old Maltese, was snapped up by a coyote in the woods behind her home. But her owners got her back and it looks like she will survive the attack.
"I've never really seen a dog with that many puncture wounds from a coyote attack before. She is one of the worst I've seen," Dr. Trisha Ross said.
Lilly's body is bandaged from head to tail, covered with more than 50 puncture wounds, some of the worst ones were around the neck. The attack happened in the back yard late Saturday night.
Sharon Hill says her husband had just taken Lilly out when he heard yelping. He grabbed a flashlight and ran after her. She was being dragged into the woods of Griswold by a coyote.
"She was actually being dragged into the woods, and my husband grabbed her and ran her inside. We called to see where we could bring her," Hill said.......

Congressman Murphy on Joe Lieberman: "I'm disappointed"

by: ctblogger
Sun Jan 06, 2008 at 17:17:42 PM EST
partial crosspost from HatCityBLOG

Back from campaigning for Chris Dodd in Iowa, Congressman Chris Murphy made an appearance on WFSB's "Face the State" and offered his views on our junior senator's endorsement of John McCain.
HOUSE: When Joe Lieberman was elected to the senate last year in 2006 he said he was going to work hard to get a Democrat back into the White House, yet he has endorsed Republican John McCain. How do you feel about that.
MURPHY: I'm disappointed. I'm disappointed.
I find it hard to believe that another four years of a Republican administration, whether it's George Bush or John McCain is the right thing for this country. I can't understand how a stay the course policy in Iraq, which John McCain espouses, is going to make this country any safer or make this country any stronger.
We all understood when Senator Lieberman got re-elected that he was going to be a different voice than he was previously, but a lot of us that think this country has to take a different direction were disappointed with his choice.
HOUSE: Should he leave the party or has he already left you think?
MURPHY: Well I think it's hard to justify that Senator Lieberman is a member of the Democratic Party any longer. ...............

Bingo. The word calls to mind glitzy casinos and folks with snowy-white hairdos gathered in a church basement. At the Half Door in Hartford, it's a different scene. Every Monday and Thursday nights, patrons in their early 20s and 30s flock to this Irish pub to drink, socialize and mark those bingo cards. It's not all about winning. There's no cover charge, and the biggest prize for stringing five numbers in a row is two free drinks. Instead, it's the carefree atmosphere that keeps the clientele coming back for more. Regulars know the bartenders by first name and laugh at the bingo-caller's bad jokes. Groups of friends huddle over the numbered slips of paper in booths with worn, wooden tabletops. And when somebody yells "Bingo!" the ones who haven't won toss their cards in the air in a flurry of good-hearted catcalls and "boos."........

BRIDGEPORT — You know the Christmas cookies are good when there are no leftovers.
That's the case for Anita Bevaqua McBride, the Bridgeport native and chief of staff for first lady Laura Bush, who recently requested a tray of Italian Christmas cookies from Bridgeport to make her holidays a little more like home.
While she was growing up, McBridge attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church here. Her friend, the Rev. Matthew Mauriello, the pastor of Holy Rosary, brought McBride a three-pound tray of struffoli from DelPrete Bakery here, fulfilling McBride's Christmas wish.
The little fried balls of egg dough dipped in honey and coated with candy sprinkles were a holiday treat at the White House.
"I shared them with the staff. They were a hit and went fast. There weren't any left for the president and Mrs. Bush," McBride said.
Mauriello visited Washington Dec. 19 to see the White House decorations for the recent holidays and brought McBride the struffolis at her request.
"They even went through the metal detector machines, of course," Mauriello said.
He got them at Del Prete, an Italian bakery on Main Street in the Bull's Head section of the city.
"It's a Christmas specialty item," said Lou Mezzo, the bakery's owner.......

Douche Bag FOI Hearing Runs Two-Plus Hours
Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission HearingJan. 4, 200818-20 Trinity St.Hartford, CT 860-566-5682 Complaint by Andy Thibault Against Paula Schwartz, Superintendent of Schools,Regional School District #10Editor's Note: Today's hearing opened shortly after 11:30 a.m. and concluded about 2 p.m. The hearing was taped by CT-N, the Connecticut Network. The network posts its schedule at http://www.ctn.state.ct.us/ and generally broadcasts such hearings a few days later.
Connecticut Network, CT-NThe hearing officer's decision generally follows several weeks later. However, both parties have until Jan. 17 to file briefs summarizing the case and making final arguments. The hearing officer's decision will be voted on during a regular meeting of the Freedom of Information Commission. In a significant development, counsel for the Region 10 Board of Education, Atty. Christine Chinni, agreed to produce unredacted billing records from her firm for an in-camera or confidential review by the FOI Commission. This followed requests during the hearing and in prior correspondence.Outstanding issues include the question of whether the Region 10 Board of Education is using an insurance company as a front or beard to hide public records. Other issues include claims that Superintendent Schwartz failed to produce records including ballots in a timely manner as required by the FOI law. A sample write-in ballot for Avery Doninger, Secretary Elect of the Lewis Mills High School Class of 2008, was entered into the record.Prior correspondence on file at the Freedom of Information Commission -- including a request for a subpoena of Chinni -- was not allowed into the hearing record.Chinni had written to the FOI Commission on Dec. 7, 2007: "While I will be representing the respondent, Paula Schwartz, Superintendent of Regional School District No. 10, in these proceedings, my partner, Craig Meuser, will present my sworn testimony on these matters."Chinni refused to testify today. No explanation was given. Most, but not all of my following remarks were allowed into the record. I also inserted a statement a couple of times as follows: The FOI law demands that the respondents produce originals of documents in a timely manner.-- Andy Thibault.................

vodka is my drink of choice

so if you EVER need a tester mr kozub, i'm your babe (really). my friends at the the half door (well eddie in particular and shawn as well) set up a test for me a couple of years ago. i went outside and they poured i believe it was 4 or 5 little sips of vodka. i was only to tell the high end from the well. i not only did that, but i named each brand (that part most likely was luck but one never knows). my drink of choice is stoli o, and stoli in general (their elit is over the top i tell ya!). i like level, ketel one and skye is passable. i dislike with a PASSION grey goose. it tastes like mold to me. i don't know how people can drink it. it's horrid

"You hit the right people," Julie Morrin told Kozub upon his offer to pour them a taste of the high-end vodka he developed in his basement in Hadley, Mass., and produces in Poland, land of his forebears."We are big vodka people," Doreen Clapis chimed in.Kozub was off and running. The 33-year-old aspiring vodka magnate had left his job as a commercial banker two years ago. was damaged by a sprinkler system. it went off because of a small fire - but the sprinklers kept raining for a long time before being shut off.

it's an historic location. it's wonderful AND haunted (by abigail pettibone). years ago (before it was this incarnation of pettibone and before it was the other place, i think the chart house) when it was pettibone, i used to go there at night sometimes. it was not locked. i had friends who lived across the street. we went to explore. we never took anything or caused any damage. you could feel the stories the house held. perhaps i saw abigail as well......... i do hope they get it back to 'normal' soon

SIMSBURY — - A smoldering cigarette is being blamed for a trash can fire early Friday that left historic Pettibone's Tavern inundated with water from its sprinkler system. The flames near a second-floor bar were extinguished within minutes, fire officials said. But because no one heard the building alarm and the sprinkler system was not being monitored, the water rained down for hours — causing extensive damage to the 200-year-old wood-frame building."The fire sprinkler really did do its job," said Patrick Tourville, Simsbury's deputy fire marshal. "Unfortunately, due to the fact no alarm company was monitoring the system, the water continued until someone came in the morning.".......

a recipe i created yesterday

because i had a fennel bulb AND sweet potatoes that HAD to be used as soon as possible

Sweet Potato and Fennel (vegan)

3 Large Sweet Potatoes
1 Fennel Bulb
1 (or 2) Granny Smith Apples (or the apple of your choice)
Onion (I like onion so I used lots)
Soy Sauce (1 or 2 T)
Cornstarch (1 T)
Hoisin Sauce (1 T)
Cumin (1/2 t or to your taste)
Cayenne Pepper (1/2 t or to your taste)
Maple Syrup (1 T or to your taste)
Stevia (1 packet)

Mix the Soy Sauce, Hoisin Sauce, Cumin, Cayenne, Maple Syrup and Stevia with approximately ½ to ¾ cup of cold water. Stir in the cornstarch

Peel Sweet Potatoes, onion and Apple (you can leave the peel on the apple if you’d like) and clean and wash and trim the fennel bulb. I used a slicer to slice them all fine. If you don’t have one, slice by hand. You can either layer the ingredients in a shallow baking pan (which has either been sprayed with non-stick oil or greased with a little oil) or mix the ingredients and dump them into the baking pan which is what I did since it’s way easier. Pour over ½ of the liquid mixture (stir to make sure the cornstarch is blended) cover and bake at 400 degrees for ½ hour. Turn the heat to 350, uncover, pour the rest of the liquid over the vegetables and bake another ½ hour or until the sweet potatoes are done/tender

(I served mine with a dollop of vegan sour crème)

please DO keep fighting chris

i like MOST of what you do and have done (i think impeachment SHOULD be on the table and i think you SHOULD support that. i also think you SHOULD be doing more to bring our men and women home from the middle east). but i do admire you. i do like you. i do thank you

john durham; crimebuster

i don't know too awfully much about mr durham. the little i did hear was rather positive. i wish mr durham very much luck in his new investigation. i want to believe something will come of this. something MUST come of this. i know what happened when our king promised he would make whoever was responsible for OUTING A COVERT CIA AGENT, pay. they 'convicted' a lesser peon but the king let him walk anyway.

i WANT to believe people who commit crimes against humanity (i.e. king george and the big dick et al) AND those who ignore the geneva convention will be properly punished. i have my fingers crossed here.

much luck to you mr durham.

Leader Chosen In CIA Probe
Attorney General Names Prosecutor From Connecticut

By EDMUND H. MAHONY And LYNNE TUOHY Courant Staff Writers

The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday named John Durham, a veteran mob-buster and public corruption prosecutor from New Haven, to lead a politically charged investigation into the destruction of CIA videotapes documenting the interrogation of al-Qaida terror suspects.Longtime colleagues of Durham, who recently concluded another bruising, special investigation of FBI corruption in Boston, said the appointment by Attorney General Michael Mukasey signals a willingness by Justice to conduct an unbiased probe into the destruction of the tapes. "He is ethical and has an incredible work ethic, and if anyone can get to the bottom on these facts, it is him," said Michael Clark, a retired FBI supervisor who worked closely with Durham on high-profile political corruption cases in Connecticut. "He will take the politics out of it and get to the bottom of it."Durham's appointment comes just weeks after the White House named Connecticut U.S. Attorney Kevin J. O'Connor associate U.S. attorney general, the third-ranking post at Justice. O'Connor, who is awaiting confirmation, said he had high praise for Durham during discussions of his possible appointment in the CIA case.......

La Paloma Sabanera, which closes Friday, was a lot of things, but it was never your regular coffeehouse/bookstore.It wasn't that the staff — led by affable co-owner Luis Edgardo Cotto — knew your favorite coffee. Nor was it the public art that decorated the walls inside and out, or the jazz concerts, movie nights, poetry readings and open mikes.La Paloma — ironically, named for an endangered pigeon found in Puerto Rico — was one of the few places in Hartford — maybe in all of Connecticut — where the clientele was mixed. Opened in mid-2004 by the Cottos — Luis and his sisters, Carmen, Cinthia, Leticia and Melanie — the small shop was home to neighborhood children doing homework in the lending library upstairs, city activists intent on changing the status quo, city politicos intent on preserving it, and a rabble of others who found the Yauco Selecto coffee strong, the music bracing and the company challenging.....

i collect ornaments. i love ornaments. here are some of them. lots are blown glass and wonderfully tacky - take for example the christmas mermaid (you can't see her tail from the angle but she's the pink and green one)! i had a blue space man that was my favorite but he's not on the tree this year (my sister decorated and i didn't feel like going to find him). the one with the carrot and moon also has the little bell in the picture. that bell ornament is as old as i am. it's beat up but it's special. my grinch (glass) and my ostrich and my purple moon pictures didn't come out. perhaps next year.
anyway, please have a merry christmas, joyous holiday season and safe and prosperous upcoming new year
