Lieberman: No apology for attacks on Obama
David Edwards and Andrew McLemore
Although Sen. Joe Lieberman said he regretted some of his attacks on President-elect Barack Obama during the campaign, he declined to offer an apology when pressed by NBC's Tom Brokaw.
The senator said many unfair statements were made about both Obama and Sen. John McCain, and that he is only one of many people who feel regret for the tone of the election.
"I do regret as I said to the caucus and afterward publically, there were some things I said in the heat of the campaign that I wish I had said more clearly. Other things, frankly, I wish I hadn't said at all," Lieberman said. "That happens to all of us in the heat of it campaign but nonetheless, I regret it and I want to move forward."
Brokaw pressed Lieberman for an apology: "I heard word 'regret' but not the word 'apology.'"
"You can take from the word regret what you will," Lieberman said..........

Lieberman, a self-described "independent Democrat" since winning re-election in 2006 without his party's endorsement, issued a statement saying he intends to "urge fellow Democrats and independents to put country ahead of party in choosing John McCain as president."
Lieberman is the first of five speakers on a prime-time program released today that includes Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, Vice President Dick Cheney, first lady Laura Bush and President Bush.
All five will speak on a night dedicated to highlighting the record of service of the party's presidential candidate.......

Lieberman: Obama Has Not Always Put Country First
By Michael Cooper
YORK, Pa. – One of the McCain campaign’s new themes, that Senator John McCain has always put his country first, has been seen by some analysts as a subtle suggestion that his opponent, Senator Barack Obama, has not.
But as he introduced Mr. McCain at a campaign event here on Tuesday, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut made the attack a lot more explicit, calling the election a choice “between one candidate, John McCain, who has always put the country first, worked across party lines to get things done, and one candidate who has not.’’
Mr. Lieberman, the Connecticut Independent who was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, made the remark as he used his introduction of Mr. McCain to deliver a harsh assessment of Mr. Obama without mentioning his name..........

Joe Lieberman Attacks Barack Obama On Fox News (Video) (click the link for video)
By: Jane Hamsher
There's nothing quite like seeing it live:
LIEBERMAN: Well, I think that - let me say generally that Sen. Obama doesn't come to this debate with a lot of credibility. Basically on the question of Iraq, John McCain has had the guts to stand out on his own arguing for what he thought was right. And it turned out that he was right about the surge working to improve conditions in Iraq.
If we did what Sen. Obama wanted us to do last year, Al-Qaeda in Iran would be in control of Iraq today. The whole Middle East would be in turmoil and American security and credibility would be jeopardized.
On the specific question of the 100 years, I think that's an unfortunate example of the way Sen. Obama has used it, of playing political gotcha with a national security question.........

Once darling of the Dems, Lieberman's support booms among GOP
HARTFORD, Conn. -- During his four terms in the U.S. Senate, Joe Lieberman says he has visited more than 130 Connecticut diners to meet with constituents. But increasingly, more Republicans may be inclined to share a proverbial "cup of joe with Joe" than the Democrats for whom he'd been the party standard-bearer for decades. Lieberman, the Democrat-turned-independent who was his party's 2000 vice presidential nominee, is now viewed unfavorably by two of every three Connecticut Democrats polled during the Super Tuesday presidential primaries, according to exit poll data...........

Lieberman escalates attack on Iraq critics
By Manu Raju
July 31, 2007
Ever since Connecticut Democrats refused to back him for a fourth term in Congress, Joe Lieberman has been burnishing his independent credentials in the narrowly divided Senate while becoming increasingly critical of the Democratic Party on the war in Iraq.Lieberman, the Democrats’ 2000 vice presidential nominee, insists he is not actively considering joining the Republican Party. But he is keeping that possibility wide open as his disenchantment grows with Democratic leaders. The main sticking points are their attempts to end the war in Iraq and their hesitation to take a harder line against Iran.“I think either [Democrats] are, in my opinion, respectfully, naïve in thinking we can somehow defeat this enemy with talk, or they’re simply hesitant to use American power, including military power,” Lieberman said in a wide-ranging interview with The Hill. “There is a very strong group within the party that I think doesn’t take the threat of Islamist terrorism seriously enough.”Lieberman says he is annoyed by the mudslinging on Capitol Hill and Democrats’ unwillingness to work with President Bush. But his critics say he has contributed to that polarization by his rhetoric and refusal to compel Bush to find a new way forward in Iraq.............
