Last May and June, Coleman, director of the Hopkinton, Mass., dog adoption agency Greyhound Friends Inc., allowed Kevin Schneider, an acquaintance of hers, to adopt two greyhounds. She said it was a mistake that won’t happen again. Schneider pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of animal cruelty after being arrested Jan. 18 by Troop D in Danielson. His case was continued until March. According to Eva Longo of the Northeast Connecticut Council of Government’s Animal Control Division, Schneider, who lives in Watertown, Mass., dumped a dog on the side of Route 6 in Killingly after months of what appeared to be improper care of the animal.According to a written account from Michael McCann, president of The Greyhound Project, a Killingly man watched Oct. 27 as someone in a black sport utility vehicle let the dog out while the vehicle was still rolling...............

Others had sought to bring comedian Stephen Colbert to campus for an alternate speech.
Instead of commencement, Rove now will speak at the school on Feb. 11, headmaster Edward J. Shanahan said. Shanahan said he will deliver the commencement address at the school, the alma mater of John F. Kennedy and Adlai Stevenson........

Mr. Rove served as the former Deputy White House Chief of Staff under George W. Bush’s administration, and was a key player in Bush’s election as president. Before Rove worked for the current Bush administration, he spent much of his career as a political advisor for primarily Republican candidates, such as Senator John Ashcroft. Mr. Rove will join a long list of Commencement speakers that have included journalists such as Peter Jennings, politicians from both parties such as Dick Cheney (when he was Secretary of Defense) and Senator Chris Dodd. “We select speakers from all walks of life, with different points of view. That is what we should be doing as an educational institution. We should be putting in front of students and faculty a wide spectrum of ideas,” commented Headmaster Shanahan, “We have commencement speakers from outside of the school community so that someone comes in with a message for graduating students about the world that they are about to engage in. But it comes as a surprise to some state officials that federal detainees are also held, secretly, right here in Connecticut. It’s all part of a contract between state and federal authorities: In exchange for a per-inmate fee, state officials agree to house federal prisoners arrested by homeland security. Connecticut has had such a contract with the federal government since 1995, but it was only after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that new regulations clamped down on information about those prisoners. According to legal arguments by state Assistant Attorney General Henri Alexandre, state authorities are prohibited from releasing any information about the federal detainees held behind bars in Connecticut prisons. That means that Connecticut could be holding detainees at any time, without a formal charge, said Lisa Siegel, counsel with the state’s Freedom of Information Commission. “This is a surprise to all of us, that there are secret prisons [in the state],” Siegel said. “The real harm of this regulation is that people are held now — we can’t get any information on them.” ...........

Regional Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers told agency Director Julie Myers in a June 5 e-mail that New Haven's Board of Aldermen had voted 25-1 the previous night to make the city the nation's first to offer illegal immigrants ID cards.
City officials said the cards would help immigrants better integrate into mainstream culture by allowing them access to bank accounts and other services.
On June 6, ICE agents swept through the city and detained an estimated 30 illegal immigrants. Critics contend the raid was retaliation for the adoption of the ID program, a charge the agency has steadfastly denied.

i KNOW this can be done
50 homes for 50 cats (or perhaps less than 50 homes if some take more than one cat). i'd be first in line EXCEPT i am wickedly allergic to cats. i love them, but i cannot live with them. there ARE 50 homes in connecticut and southern mass for these cats. it should BE NO PROBLEM.

Recently though, the fire marshal deemed the apartment and barn in which she and the cats live unsafe and illegal. This means that she has only four days to find a good place for 50 cats to live.........

it is january 22nd. blog for choice day
and it is the anniversary of roe v. wade. this year we've been asked why we 'vote' pro choice. well i don't think of myself as 'voting' pro choice. i just think of myself as PRO CHOICE. NO, NOT PRO ABORTION. PRO CHOICE. there is a great difference. i don't advocate abortion. i do advocate birth control and reproductive EDUCATION.
however, when a woman chooses to have an abortion, it is her right to do so. it is her right to feel safe doing so. it is her right for that choice to remain PRIVATE if it is her decision to have it so. it is her right to have a choice if there are health reasons (hers or that of the fetus). it is her right to have a choice if there are circumstances which may make having a child a tragedy. it is her choice and should be respected. it is her choice and NOT some old white rich dude's choice. it is HER choice and not YOUR GOD'S choice.
in almost all cases it is not an easy choice. but it is HER choice to make. it is HER BODY and HER MIND AND HER HEART.
we must never let back room abortions take place again. we must protect this choice we have and not let it be taken away by those who speak false words and judge us as evil. (by the way even those that 'oppose' choice have had abortions. they keep it deeply hidden because of the stigma they perceive. they keep it deeply hidden because of how their families and their men will react. well we all know many many many women who have made the choice to terminate a pregnancy. and yes, they DO come from all walks of life. all religions and all political views)

Maxie was on a mission.
The 4-year-old shih tzu romped away from owner George Morris while on a walk about 5 a.m. Friday, but the early morning game soon turned serious.
While going after the dog, the 69-year-old Morris slipped on ice in his condominium's parking lot and couldn't get up. That's when Maxie sounded the alarm........

In the late 1980s, two college friends exchanged letters, congratulating each other on the political victories each had recently enjoyed.One had just been elected third selectman of Greenwich.The other had just been elected prime minister of Pakistan.
It was just a small event in the friendship of Democrat Ned Lamont and Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in Pakistan Dec. 27 as she attempted to regain power.About a week into the new year, Lamont received a late-arriving Christmas card from Bhutto, mailed days before she was killed, becoming the fourth member of her family to die as a result of political violence.The card read, "Praying for Peace in the World and Happiness for your Family in 2008."Lamont had not seen his old friend in four years — when they reminisced over lunch about their days together as undergraduates at Harvard, when she was known on campus as "Pinkie."..............

DEADLINE FEBRUARY 1st! POSTMARK
The Connecticut State University System and IMPAC Control Systems Inc. present the annual Young Writers competition, for students ages 13-18 during the school year.Contestants are encouraged to submit any prose or poetry to IMPAC-CSUS Young Writers 2008. The young writers competition in Connecticut has given more than $150,000 to Connecticut's best young writers since 1998. About 4,000 young writers have participated in the program.Poets and writers in each of Connecticut's eight counties win $1,000 prizes annually, awarded during ceremonies at the four CSU System campuses. Public, private or home school teachers must sign the form and nominate the poets and writers. About a dozen finalists in prose and poetry from each county are invited to the regional ceremonies.

for the rest of their lives. this is one of THE worst cases i have ever heard about.

Plainville (WTNH) _ Two brothers are charged in a horrifying case of animal abuse. This comes after a pet pit bull bites a young boy's arm.
A very disturbing case in Plainville. Police say, a little boy was taken to the hospital after being bitten on the arm by his uncle's pit bull. But it didn't end there. Now, that boy's father is behind bars, while his uncle is facing charges. And, the dog has been put down.
No one is home at the Farmington Avenue house in Plainville where the brothers live. Severino Cruz, 32, and 27-year-old Enrique Cruz were both arrested. This comes after a horrific crime occurred Sunday afternoon. A three-year-old pit bull, kept in a cage in the basement, got loose and bit Severino's 8-year-old son Nick.
Police say the bite was no severe but enough for him to get checked out.
"The dog bit the son Nick," Captain Peter Costanzo of the Plainville Police Department said. "At which point, Enrique took Nick to the hospital for treatment."
When the father heard about the attack, he took matters into his own hands. "Severino came home at that point in time and in a fit of rage, took a power drill and drilled the dog's head several times," Costanzo said.
The dog, back in the cage at this time, had no way to get away.
"He held the dog by his collar with his chain and drilled the holes in the dog," Costanzo noted................

i had NO idea witch hazel was a connecticut commodity
my mother, when i was a girl, touted it's benefits. i've used it all of my life. as a matter of fact, for a couple of years i STOPPED using it. i had some peeling of my skin on the sides of my nose. no matter how much i sloughed that skin on a DAILY BASIS, it just kept on peeling. the ONLY thing that helped it (and i tried EVERYTHING including prescriptions) was WITCH HAZEL.
i don't have any stock in the company. i don't work for the company. i don't know anyone that works for the company (to the best of my knowledge that is). i am not affiliated with the company in ANY way. i'm telling you all right now, GO GET SOME WITCH HAZEL AND USE IT EVERY DAY

It was the kind of maneuver that could result in a nasty gash to a body part, or worse, for a less experienced hand. But Galas, 45, has spent many hours in the woods with a chainsaw over the past eight years, cutting witch hazel for his friend Mike Dzurnak.
Dzurnak, 52, whose father and grandfather both cut witch hazel in these woods before him, is one of about eight "brush cutters" in the state who harvest Connecticut's near-monopoly on the worldwide supply of this plant, prized for its qualities as a natural astringent. This year, Dzurnak will supply some 300 tons of chipped witch hazel to American Distilling & Mfg. Inc. in nearby East Hampton, cutting from November to March...........

important request
the west hartford police (officers association) are collecting donations (of personal items) and notes for two of their own. one will be deployed to iraq (officer samuel ferrucci ) and one is in afghanistan (lieutenant daniel coppinger)
so, if you live in town, why not drop a few items off? i have adopted a few soldiers over the past few years from soldier's angels. i know how much care packages mean to someone who is deployed.
you can bring non-perishable food items (NO pork products though - beef jerky is good, powdered drink mixes, candy, etc). toiletries (deodorants, baby wipes, hand cream, etc. please put them in a ziplock bag though - just in case.......). magazines and books and puzzle, sudoku books are good. dvds and cds.how about playing cards, cribbage boards....
if you need more ideas, go to the soldier's angels website. they have a BUNCH of good ideas for care packages.

who KNEW bar bingo (for NO monetary gain i might add) wasn't a go? (i really didn't. i KNEW you couldn't do it for money or real prizes. but shoot for a DRINK?). sometimes, i guess publicity is a BAD thing (see my posting of a day or two ago). sorry this happened. it's a great little bar: the half door. it's a great place to meet friends after work and talk. it's got a damn fine menu (shout out to matt, ty, big maria, andy, tim, little maria). so even though they took bar bingo away, you should STILL give it a try.

Griswold (WTNH) _ A beloved pet's run-in with a coyote has changed one family forever. The attack came right in front of the dog's owner.
It's being called a miracle tonight. Lilly, an 8-year-old Maltese, was snapped up by a coyote in the woods behind her home. But her owners got her back and it looks like she will survive the attack.
"I've never really seen a dog with that many puncture wounds from a coyote attack before. She is one of the worst I've seen," Dr. Trisha Ross said.
Lilly's body is bandaged from head to tail, covered with more than 50 puncture wounds, some of the worst ones were around the neck. The attack happened in the back yard late Saturday night.
Sharon Hill says her husband had just taken Lilly out when he heard yelping. He grabbed a flashlight and ran after her. She was being dragged into the woods of Griswold by a coyote.
"She was actually being dragged into the woods, and my husband grabbed her and ran her inside. We called to see where we could bring her," Hill said.......

Back from campaigning for Chris Dodd in Iowa, Congressman Chris Murphy made an appearance on WFSB's "Face the State" and offered his views on our junior senator's endorsement of John McCain.
HOUSE: When Joe Lieberman was elected to the senate last year in 2006 he said he was going to work hard to get a Democrat back into the White House, yet he has endorsed Republican John McCain. How do you feel about that.
MURPHY: I'm disappointed. I'm disappointed.
I find it hard to believe that another four years of a Republican administration, whether it's George Bush or John McCain is the right thing for this country. I can't understand how a stay the course policy in Iraq, which John McCain espouses, is going to make this country any safer or make this country any stronger.
We all understood when Senator Lieberman got re-elected that he was going to be a different voice than he was previously, but a lot of us that think this country has to take a different direction were disappointed with his choice.
HOUSE: Should he leave the party or has he already left you think?

There's no cover charge, and the biggest prize for stringing five numbers in a row is two free drinks. Instead, it's the carefree atmosphere that keeps the clientele coming back for more. Regulars know the bartenders by first name and laugh at the bingo-caller's bad jokes. Groups of friends huddle over the numbered slips of paper in booths with worn, wooden tabletops. And when somebody yells "Bingo!" the ones who haven't won toss their cards in the air in a flurry of good-hearted catcalls and "boos."........

i don't know if you've ever had it or not, but it is one of my all time favorites. i've made it from time to time as well. it's sticky and messy to make. a royal pain in the buttocks. it's ALL worth it though

BRIDGEPORT — You know the Christmas cookies are good when there are no leftovers.
That's the case for Anita Bevaqua McBride, the Bridgeport native and chief of staff for first lady Laura Bush, who recently requested a tray of Italian Christmas cookies from Bridgeport to make her holidays a little more like home.
While she was growing up, McBridge attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church here. Her friend, the Rev. Matthew Mauriello, the pastor of Holy Rosary, brought McBride a three-pound tray of struffoli from DelPrete Bakery here, fulfilling McBride's Christmas wish.
The little fried balls of egg dough dipped in honey and coated with candy sprinkles were a holiday treat at the White House.
"I shared them with the staff. They were a hit and went fast. There weren't any left for the president and Mrs. Bush," McBride said.
Mauriello visited Washington Dec. 19 to see the White House decorations for the recent holidays and brought McBride the struffolis at her request.
"They even went through the metal detector machines, of course," Mauriello said.
He got them at Del Prete, an Italian bakery on Main Street in the Bull's Head section of the city.
"It's a Christmas specialty item," said Lou Mezzo, the bakery's owner.......

vodka is my drink of choice
so if you EVER need a tester mr kozub, i'm your babe (really). my friends at the the half door (well eddie in particular and shawn as well) set up a test for me a couple of years ago. i went outside and they poured i believe it was 4 or 5 little sips of vodka. i was only to tell the high end from the well. i not only did that, but i named each brand (that part most likely was luck but one never knows). my drink of choice is stoli o, and stoli in general (their elit is over the top i tell ya!). i like level, ketel one and skye is passable. i dislike with a PASSION grey goose. it tastes like mold to me. i don't know how people can drink it. it's horrid

UPDATE: FROM SEPTEMBER 11, 2008 SEE THIS POSTING: i've been getting a lot of hits lately..........was damaged by a sprinkler system. it went off because of a small fire - but the sprinklers kept raining for a long time before being shut off.
it's an historic location. it's wonderful AND haunted (by abigail pettibone). years ago (before it was this incarnation of pettibone and before it was the other place, i think the chart house) when it was pettibone, i used to go there at night sometimes. it was not locked. i had friends who lived across the street. we went to explore. we never took anything or caused any damage. you could feel the stories the house held. perhaps i saw abigail as well......... i do hope they get it back to 'normal' soon

a recipe i created yesterday
because i had a fennel bulb AND sweet potatoes that HAD to be used as soon as possible
Sweet Potato and Fennel (vegan)
3 Large Sweet Potatoes
1 Fennel Bulb
1 (or 2) Granny Smith Apples (or the apple of your choice)
Onion (I like onion so I used lots)
Soy Sauce (1 or 2 T)
Cornstarch (1 T)
Hoisin Sauce (1 T)
Cumin (1/2 t or to your taste)
Cayenne Pepper (1/2 t or to your taste)
Maple Syrup (1 T or to your taste)
Stevia (1 packet)
Mix the Soy Sauce, Hoisin Sauce, Cumin, Cayenne, Maple Syrup and Stevia with approximately ½ to ¾ cup of cold water. Stir in the cornstarch
Peel Sweet Potatoes, onion and Apple (you can leave the peel on the apple if you’d like) and clean and wash and trim the fennel bulb. I used a slicer to slice them all fine. If you don’t have one, slice by hand. You can either layer the ingredients in a shallow baking pan (which has either been sprayed with non-stick oil or greased with a little oil) or mix the ingredients and dump them into the baking pan which is what I did since it’s way easier. Pour over ½ of the liquid mixture (stir to make sure the cornstarch is blended) cover and bake at 400 degrees for ½ hour. Turn the heat to 350, uncover, pour the rest of the liquid over the vegetables and bake another ½ hour or until the sweet potatoes are done/tender
(I served mine with a dollop of vegan sour crème)

i don't know too awfully much about mr durham. the little i did hear was rather positive. i wish mr durham very much luck in his new investigation. i want to believe something will come of this. something MUST come of this. i know what happened when our king promised he would make whoever was responsible for OUTING A COVERT CIA AGENT, pay. they 'convicted' a lesser peon but the king let him walk anyway.
i WANT to believe people who commit crimes against humanity (i.e. king george and the big dick et al) AND those who ignore the geneva convention will be properly punished. i have my fingers crossed here.

La Paloma Sabanera, which closes Friday, was a lot of things, but it was never your regular coffeehouse/bookstore.It wasn't that the staff — led by affable co-owner Luis Edgardo Cotto — knew your favorite coffee. Nor was it the public art that decorated the walls inside and out, or the jazz concerts, movie nights, poetry readings and open mikes.La Paloma — ironically, named for an endangered pigeon found in Puerto Rico — was one of the few places in Hartford — maybe in all of Connecticut — where the clientele was mixed. Opened in mid-2004 by the Cottos — Luis and his sisters, Carmen, Cinthia, Leticia and Melanie — the small shop was home to neighborhood children doing homework in the lending library upstairs, city activists intent on changing the status quo, city politicos intent on preserving it, and a rabble of others who found the Yauco Selecto coffee strong, the music bracing and the company challenging.....

merry christmas
i collect ornaments. i love ornaments. here are some of them. lots are blown glass and wonderfully tacky - take for example the christmas mermaid (you can't see her tail from the angle but she's the pink and green one)! i had a blue space man that was my favorite but he's not on the tree this year (my sister decorated and i didn't feel like going to find him). the one with the carrot and moon also has the little bell in the picture. that bell ornament is as old as i am. it's beat up but it's special. my grinch (glass) and my ostrich and my purple moon pictures didn't come out. perhaps next year.
anyway, please have a merry christmas, joyous holiday season and safe and prosperous upcoming new year

i had surgery a few years back
it was a five hour procedure (give or take) and it was on (well in) my neck. my surgeon said i would be in the hospital overnight. he wanted me there to monitor me. my insurer said NO, i wasn't to stay overnight. THEY reviewed my case and THEY decided i DID NOT have to stay overnight. so my surgeon said he wanted me there, THEY said no. my surgeon DID come up with a plan to keep me overnight (he'd just leave me in 'recovery' overnight) so all was well (my surgery was at 6 am and i ended up leaving the same night at about 7 pm. MY decision and i cleared it with my doc and he thought it was fine as long as someone was with me for that night and the next day). i cannot imagine needing a liver and being told NO. it's one thing to be booted out of the hospital for one night, another thing to be denied an ORGAN

While students at Central Connecticut State University headed home for winter break, campus police hoped they could catch a break and find the person or persons responsible for a hate crime.
It was in a bathroom at Barrows Hall where someone found a drawing clearly depicting a black stick figure being hanged. There is no tolerance at CCSU for such a blatant act of racism.
"I don't believe in it myself but we have 10,000 students here. There would have to be some of which are racist,"Rob Lamere, CCSU junior, said...........

BRIDGEPORT — A crew of utility workers took a break from replacing a street light Friday to gawk as Greenwich resident Hank Pohl cleared some sidewalks of snow with his Wovel.
Pohl wasn't on some sort of court-ordered clean up. He's the vice president of marketing and one of the owners of New Canaan-based Structured Solutions II, the maker of the Wovel (wheeled shovel). The Wovel does warrant a double take. It looks like some sort of antique iron snow shovel attached to a wheel. Some have compared it to antique bicycles, but it also looks like the wheels on old sewing machines. Despite the look the Wovel is pretty light; the wheel is made of space-age plastic and rubber and the handle is steel. It weighs about 26 pounds. "Am I going ............

Soldier gets a home for the holidays

Coventry (WTNH) _ A Connecticut soldier got the keys to his dream house today and it's all due to the kindness of strangers and one non-profit group.
Last summer this construction project was barely house for wounded Marine Sgt. Brian Johnston.
Today, it's not only a house, built by hundreds of homes for our troops volunteers; it's a home just in time for the holidays.
"I knew it was going to be a surprise. I just didn't know what I was going to be surprised with," said veteran Sgt. Johnston.
To help him move in, his mother Vera Herron-Morrey flew in from Utah, a surprise courtesy of volunteers Sharon and Pete Robbins.
"I just cried. I don't get to see him very often and I'm just so proud of him," said Herron-Morrey..........

as i've mentioned before, i have a friend who was in the horrific avon mountain accident. mark was injured so badly, he was lifestar-ed out. he's writing a book (i was privileged enough to be allowed to read the first four AMAZING chapters) about it. oh, and he's NOT writing it for profit (for himself that is). a shout out to mark as well! mark told me a few things about officer myers that were never mentioned in any of the articles written about him. let's just say he MORE than deserves this national honor. congratulations to you officer myers

David Wolfson will present a lecture on the state of legal protection for farmed animals in the United States . Most state anti-cruelty laws exempt "customary farming practices." Wolfson will examine how these exemptions made it into the statutes and the dampening effect they have on courts' ability to hear even cases of egregious animal cruelty.
Wolfson is a partner in the Global Corporate Group at Milbank, Tweed , Hadley & McCloy LLP. He teaches animal law at Columbia Law School and NYU Law School , where he is currently an adjunct professor. He has represented several animal protection organizations—including the Humane Society of the United States , Farm Sanctuary, and the Animal Legal Defense Fund—and has written extensively in the area. Recent works include a chapter in Animal Rights (edited by Martha Nussbaum and Cass Sunstein) and a forthcoming article in Law and Contemporary Problems.

would have been to actually DO SOMETHING (other than slap his wrist) YEARS ago when you were FIRST AWARE of the inner workings of reardon. you (st. francis) are personally VERY LUCKY i was not a victim of reardon's at the hospital. if i was, i would do everything in my power to make you pay
(i wouldn't have been angry at the hospital if they didn't know. really, i wouldn't have. but after the complaints started coming in, ALL they did was dismiss him. they also DISCOURAGED a further investigation into reardon by the authorities)

St. Francis Hospital placed a full-page ad in a newspaper offering a phone number for victims in a West Hartford child pornography case.
A few weeks ago, more than 50,000 images of child pornography were found in a prominent doctor’s former home.................
.................In the ad, St. Francis said they have created a dedicated, confidential phone number for individuals and families who felt like they were victims of Reardon’s behavior. That number is 877-288-5774.
They also said in the ad, “We will be exploring alternatives to resolving this matter in a way that will be prompt and fair to all parties and consistent with our mission of providing superior care that is always above ethical reproach.” ..........

Zachoriah Williams, 21, of East Hartford, a National Guardsman, lost his life after he pulled over to help the other motorist, a young serviceman like himself who would die with him. ......
