it's NOT classified

why throw fear into ORDINARY CITIZENS.

do your fucking jobs. the jobs include taking a NIGERIAN EXECUTIVE WHO STOPS BY A CONSULATE TO REPORT STRANGE GOINGS ON BY HIS SON (this is UNHEARD of by the way) seriously. you KNEW something was up.

really, patting someone down is NOT classified. and really, not letting someone relieve themselves for the last hour of a flight is FUCKING TORTURE (or it would be in MY case as i am on prescription diuretics)

steven and christopher, you have my sympathies. i'm sorry the cia or the tsa or homeland security or the fbi or WHOMEVER didn't do their jobs and now we can't have shite on our laps on a plane ride or get up for the last hour (how is THAT going to make a difference i ask you. it's STUPID)

ok, i'm going to stop now

TSA Threatens Blogger Who Posted New Screening Directive

By Kim Zetter

Two bloggers received home visits from Transportation Security Administration agents Tuesday after they published a new TSA directive that revises screening procedures and puts new restrictions on passengers in the wake of a recent bombing attempt by the so-called underwear bomber.

Special agents from the TSA’s Office of Inspection interrogated two U.S. bloggers, one of them an established travel columnist, and served them each with a civil subpoena demanding information on the anonymous source that provided the TSA document.

The document, which the two bloggers published within minutes of each other Dec. 27, was sent by TSA to airlines and airports around the world and described temporary new requirements for screening passengers through Dec. 30, including conducting “pat-downs” of legs and torsos. The document, which was not classified, was posted by numerous bloggers. Information from it was also published on some airline websites................

Soldier with Waterbury tie reported slain by insurgent
BA soldier who grew up in Waterbury and graduated from Holy Cross High School was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday, according to members of his family.

Sgt. Ronald Spino, 46, of Fayetteville, N.C., was unloading supplies at a base Tuesday when an Afghan insurgent shot him in the back, according to his brother, Glen Spino of Avon. He said the insurgent wounded two Italian soldiers as well.

Various military spokespeople would not confirm Spino's death on Wednesday. The military is bound by law not to release names of casualties for 24 hours after a slain servicemember's family has been notified, military officials said.

Glen Spino said military counselors knocked on the door of the Florida home of his parents, James and Rita Spino, Tuesday night to give them the news.....................

Joe Lieberman: How About Another War?

posted by John Nichols

Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, who began openly and aggressively angling for a war with Iraq just weeks after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, and who has been the most ardent advocate for expanding the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan, appears to be determined to use the thwarted Christmas Day attack on a Northwest Airlines flight as an excuse to launch another crusade for another war.

Lieberman, the neoconservative solon who wanted to be the Secretary of Defense in the administration of John McCain (his 2008 candidate for president) and who would gladly play the same role in the administration of a Sarah Palin or any other saber-rattling Republican, is proposing the launch of a new preemptive war on Yemen.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian accused of attempting to explode a plastic device aboard a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Friday, has told authorities that he traveled to Yemen to link up with al-Qaida operatives.............

first of all you GIANT asswipe

STFU. if you're NOT from connecticut you don't get to yell at us. I AM from here so I CAN yell at us (and so can rose delauro)

i didn't effing vote for him. i voted for ned lamont. WE, the good (and obviously sometimes not too very bright) citizens of connecticut ARE responsible for da liebs but we're NOT responsible for your big fat mouth (i have one too so that's why i'm saying it about YOU). so once again michael MOORE we don't want you we don't need you. fine. see what your boycott does. no rich peeps from parts unknown invading our towns for summer, winter, fall and spring vacations? believe me i can live with that. does that include YOU? do YOU have a home here? hope not. i don't like you in the least. oh sure, our sentiments are similar but mine are genuine. you spew all of this kumbaya stuff yet you live like DA MAN. you're NOT fooling me. where do you live? where does your child (or is it children, i really don't know) go to school? (hint, i bet it doesn't have a p.s. in front of it). do you fly coach? do you stay in holiday inns? hmmmmmmmmmmm

you're a GROWN man michael moore. stop using 2 for two, to or too and stop using u for you. you're not prince or sinead o'connor

i have an idea! why don't we, the good (if not somewhat stupid) citizens of connecticut boycott michael moore! let's BAN his ass from our state as well. not even flying OVER it will be allowed. jodi, what say you?

Michael Moore ‘holds Connecticut responsible’ for public option failure

By Daniel Tencer
Progressive filmmaker has called for a boycott of the state of Connecticut if voters there don't start an effort to unseat Sen. Joe Lieberman.

"People of Connecticut: What have u done 2 this country?" Moore asked in a Tweet Wednesday afternoon. "We hold u responsible. Start recall of Lieberman 2day or we'll boycott your state."

Lieberman has been the focus of progressive anger since he announced late last week that he would vote against the Senate health care reform bill if the bill included a Medicare buy-in provision that would allow some people aged 55 to 64 to buy into the government-run seniors' health care program............

and you big bag o' wind get this...............

................."Memo to Michael Moore and any other frustrated lefties out there: There is no such thing as a congressional recall. So until 2012, we're all stuck with Joe," writes Eric Kleefeld at TalkingPointsMemo..................

i am seething with anger

black and blue square has ruined the town of west hartford for ME. i no longer go anywhere near the center (with the exception of every once in a while that whole foods if i can't get to the one at bishops corner). the area is now full of scenesters (you know who i'm talking about). i just described them as having designer suvs, designer dogs, designer kids and designer friends. anyone know what the rents of the center stores and/or black and blue square are? i'm sure they're NOT pretty.

plus where am i gonna park my new designer suv any damn way?

i am not a fan of malls either by the way. but westfarms never should have settled.

Westfarms' Owners Agree To $34 Million Settlement With Blue Back

The Harford Courant
WEST HARTFORD — - The owners of Blue Back Square are getting $34 million in compensation for lost revenue, increased financing costs and other losses as a result of the yearlong construction delay caused by a blizzard of 11 anti-Blue Back lawsuits bankrolled by a retail competitor.

Taubman Centers Inc., the corporate parent of Westfarms mall and the mall's majority owner, agreed in an out-of-court settlement last week to pay its $26.8 million share of the money by today.

Pictures: Blue Back Square

The negotiated settlement — Blue Back lawyers were seeking more than $40 million — resolves Blue Back's 2007 lawsuit seeking damages. There is no admission of liability or fault in the settlement by Taubman, which owns 79 percent of the mall, or its four Westfarms partners, who own 21 percent.

The settlement money is being split by the private developers of Blue Back: Raymond Road Associates, BBS Development LLC and Blue Back Square LLC.

The lawsuits postponed Blue Back construction, resulting in a 2007 opening, just as the national economy began to shrivel.

Joe Lieberman the man who personally killed Health Care Reform

Posted by Rack Jite in Politics

Just when we all thought there was a watered down health care compromise that would work - tossing out the public option in lieu of allowing 55 year olds' and up to buy into Medicare - Senator Joe "Droppy Dog" Lieberman on Sunday said NO WAY. This after months of bragging he would personally filibuster any public option in a health care bill.

Lieberman may very well go down in history as the man who killed health care reform out of spite. He is a vindictive little shit of a man who needs to be RECALLED, today.

This being the end of the year it is time for me to decide who gets the Shithead of 2009 award. Not much doubt on who will win, but it is also time for the Shithead of the Decade award. I think he is going to get it. Sure there's Cheney, Rove, W, Beck, Limbaugh, Dobbs to choose from, but I have say all of them were following their ideology.............

i was out an about yesterday

it was raw out and it definitely was rainy. at first it TRIED to snow but it couldn't so it just rained and rained. the windshields were not freezing and i saw cars moving easily up and down the street (from the safe and cozy inside of the half door. when i did go outside for a butt, i saw what appeared to be some kind of accident on the sidewalk. a bicyclist was prone on the sidewalk and not able to get up. the fire department and an ambulance (eventually) arrived to assist. the sidewalks WERE a sheet of ice. i saw a lot of people who were walking about the neighborhood slipping and sliding. i guess some of the roads must have been packed with black ice too. i proceeded home with much caution..........

Mangled Mess in Shelton after 50 Car Pileup
By MIKE SPRINGER and BEN SOSENKO

A 50 car accident closed Route 110 between Wheeler Street and Leavenworth Road in Shelton for over five hours Sunday.

Police say about 50 vehicles were involved in an accident along Route 110 near Indian Wells Road just before 12:30 p.m.

Steve Arena of Shelton's wife was driving one of those vehicles. She told him that she was driving 20 mph when she lost control of her car on the ice and slammed into the car in front of her. She was able to get out of her car, and watched the next car slam into her. Arena arrived moments later.

"As I got around the turn to approach, I thought I was seeing things in a movie," said Arena. "Just cars every which way, mangeled. I mean I've never seen anything quite like this."

Sixty-two people reported minor injuries and six of those people were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, said police. ..............

my thoughts and prayers are with you. i am so very sorry for your loss. i thank cpl latorre and everyone else who is serving their country. their service is much appreciated

Waterbury Marine Dies Four Months After Bomb Blast
On Monday, in his Texas hospital room, the gravely ill Cpl. Xhacob LaTorre of Waterbury received a Purple Heart for the wounds he suffered in August from a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

On Tuesday, he died of his injuries.

The Marine leaves behind his wife, Frances, and a 1½-year-old son, Javier. A 2005 graduate of Crosby High School in Waterbury, LaTorre was in the ROTC program. He would have turned 21 Saturday.

LaTorre's legs were severely injured when an improvised, explosive device detonated in the Helmand province of Afghanistan on Aug. 10. The bomb instantly killed a fellow Marine who had been on foot patrol with LaTorre, said his aunt, Carmen LaSalle.

His legs had to be amputated, LaSalle said. LaTorre had made progress, though, and was talking and eating at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio within weeks of his injury, she said.

Then infection set in, and his condition worsened, LaSalle said. When he was conscious, he screamed in pain, she said..................

Calf with a cross on its head

David Pescovitz

Praise be, this holy calf was born a week ago on a Sterling, Connecticut farm owned by Brad Davis. From WFSB:
Davis said, "Well, I think it's maybe a message from up above. I'm not sure. We're still trying to figure that out."

Megan Johnson of Sterling said, "Well I wasn't surprised. I wasn't surprised at all because the dairy industry has needed a miracle for a long time and this is it. I think it's divine intervention, personally. I'm in the breeding business and I know about reproduction and genetics and I don't think this could happen again in a million cows."

Health Care: Lieberman Puts Himself In The Spotlight, Again
Washington Post

WASHINGTON - Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., has once again inserted himself into the middle of an inflamed partisan debate, raising questions about his motives, his ego and his fickle allegiance to the Democratic Party, which forgave him after he supported Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for president.

Lieberman says he is feeling "relevant" as he threatens to withhold his vote — potentially the decisive 60th — on health care reform legislation if it includes a government-run insurance plan. And it is hard to dispute Lieberman's assertion as Capitol Hill moves farther from the "public option," to the consternation of liberals.

"There is no question he's taken pleasure in this role," said Jacob Hacker, a Yale University political scientist who helped write the initial public option proposal..............

    Special To The Courant

WEST HARTFORD — - Because The Bridge Family Center in West Hartford serves 10,000 children, youth and families a year, it's understandable that its holiday wish list includes items that kids and teens love.

Executive director Margaret Hann says gift cards lead the list of donations that the agency is seeking this holiday season.

"Gift cards, those are huge," she said.

The list includes cards for Marshalls, Walmart, Kohl's, BJ's Wholesale Club, Best Buy, Bob's Stores, Target, Old Navy, A.J. Wright, TJ Maxx, Burlington Coat Factory, CVS, Showcase Cinemas, Bow-Tie Cinemas, nail salons, supermarkets and restaurants such as Chili's Grill & Bar, Ruby Tuesday, Olive Garden and Friendly's.

Marine Returns Home To Wallingford With Purple Heart

    The Hartford Courant

WALLINGFORD — - They came from next door and they came from Maine. Some brought flags and others brought homemade chocolate chip cookies. But they all had a common purpose: Thanking Marine Cpl. Jameson Charest for his service to this country. Charest, 20, returned home to Wallingford Saturday evening to an enthusiastic, snow-covered crowd of friends, family and total strangers. "We have to let them know that their sacrifice has not gone without notice," said Chet Miller , a local U.S. Navy veteran who never met Charest, but came from his other home in Maine for the event. Charest, a 2007 graduate of Lyman Hall High School, enlisted on his 18th birthday. But he had been talking of joining the military since he was a young boy, his mother, Karen Charest, said. .................

    litchfield, land of the free

costly and home of the brave rich effing snobs.

now i'm not one for using ribbons. i certainly support cures for cancer and aids and rights of people and our military. i just happen to not understand how a piece of fabric is going to bring our men and women home or find a cure for cancer. HOWEVER, the ribbons in general don't offend me. if it brings someone comfort to put a ribbon on their door or a TREE, even a tree on a town (or borough) green, well then, fine.

the town of litchfield famous for saying NO NO AND HELL NO to jews is now saying NO NO AND HELL NO to town residents who wish to put (for the sixth year in a row mind you) ribbons around trees on the town green

seems like the town outright lied whoops, i mean misspoke about a botanist saying the ribbons were causing trees to be damaged.

Borough Of Litchfield Board: Get Those Yellow Ribbons Off Our Town Green Trees

ITCHFIELD — - For the past six years several military mothers here and their supporters have decorated the trees on the town green with yellow ribbons to express their support for local residents who serve in Afghanistan and Iraq.

But on Tuesday the Borough of Litchfield's governing body, the board of warden and burgesses, voted to prohibit expression that involves ribbons on trees, and that has thrown this attractive tourist mecca in Litchfield County into an uproar.

At its December meeting, the board said its ban was motivated by concerns about the health of the trees on the historic green, and the fear that other groups would demand the same right to hang ribbons. Ribbons would be banned on the green except for holiday purposes.
    ...

..............First, the board members said, Norfolk forester Starling Childs had inspected the trees on the green and concluded that the ribbons were hurting their health, encouraging the growth of fungus under the ribbons. Second, the presence of yellow ribbons on the green might encourage other groups to apply for permission to hang ribbons there.

Childs, who maintains the 6,000-acre Great Mountain Forest in Norfolk, is one of Connecticut's best-known tree experts. Reached on Friday, Childs said that he was asked by the Borough of Litchfield in October to conduct an inventory of its trees on the green as part of a plan for preserving the space. But Childs says that he was not asked to examine the question of the yellow ribbons and in fact did not even mention them in his report.

"They must be confusing me with some other botanist, because I don't remember even noticing the ribbons at all and I certainly didn't comment on them," says Childs.
    ...........

pic LAURIE PARMENTIER, whose son Liam Dwyer served in Iraq as a Marine till 2007, stands with a yellow ribbon tied around a tree on the Litchfield Green. The boroughÂ’s board has voted to ban the ribbons, which have been on the trees for years. (MARK MIRKO/Hartford Courant / December 4, 2009)

here's what aetna is up to

and believe me 600,000 is A LOT of people to drop coverage on. that is almost unheard of in the biz

my company had aetna coverage for YEARS and YEARS. next year we're going with another insurer. i'm not sure if it was MY company's decision or aetnas. i'm guessing it was my company and they did it because they found someone cheaper.

companies like mine will never have a problem insuring their employees. we have several thousand people. companies like mine make up 300,000 of the aetna dumps. the other 300,000 are smaller companies. now THEY WILL have a hard time. you get one employee with a significant health problem and that's all she wrote.

(and THAT'S EXACTLY WHY WE NEED HEALTH CARE REFORM by the way.)

Aetna Forcing 600,000-Plus To Lose Coverage In Effort To Raise Profits

    Sam Stein

Health insurance giant Aetna is planning to force up to 650,000 clients to drop their coverage next year as it seeks to raise additional revenue to meet profit expectations.

In a third-quarter earnings conference call in late October, officials at Aetna announced that in an effort to improve on a less-than-anticipated profit margin in 2009, they would be raising prices on their consumers in 2010. The insurance giant predicted that the company would subsequently lose between 300,000 and 350,000 members next year from its national account as well as another 300,000 from smaller group accounts............

i'm still in a total state of disbelief and shock

oh i knew this happened (and i'm guessing is STILL happening). i am sickened by the ATTITUDES of some. molesting children is ok UNTIL someone makes a big ol' stink out of it. molesting children is ok because it's ONLY SPORADIC. molesting children is ok because we have to worry about keeping the faggots out of the church instead. yeah, that's how THIS evil monster felt i'm here to tell you (and if you need telling YOU'RE an evil monster too). i am only sorry there is no hell because if there was egan would burn in it for eternity.

MOLESTING CHILDREN IS NOT ALL RIGHT IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, UNDER ANY CONDITION.
i know this for a fact. i know it because it is and always will be with ME. you can't "cure" it. oh i don't believe you can at all. so catholic church while you worry about not giving communion to a kennedy (just because he happens to support a woman's right to choose) and you're worried about keeping gay priests out, you let our children be marred for life because f**king a kid isn't any big deal, but a man f**king another man is. yup, there's nothing wrong with that thought process at all

note: the courant has extensive coverage of this. timelines and pictures and transcripts too. really DO click on the article link below

pic: New York Cardinal Edward M. Egan, while serving as bishop of the Bridgeport Roman Catholic Diocese from 1988 to 2000, allowed several priests facing multiple accusations of sexual abuse to continue working for years. (SCOTT OLSON / GETTY IMAGES / June 16, 2005)

Documents Shed Light On Church's Treatment Of Allegations Against Priests

Even as a young seminary student, Raymond Pcolka's psychiatric problems caused doctors to question whether he should be a priest. Early in his studies, seminary officials sent Pcolka home for a year to "recover control of his nerves." But after returning to school, a Bridgeport psychiatrist deemed Pcolka to be suffering an "obsessive compulsive type neurosis." Another doctor diagnosed a neurotic reaction and "adjustment problems of late adolescence." Still another recommended further psychiatric examination for the "uncommunicative" Pcolka. >> Transcript of Oct. 7, 1997 Videotaped Deposition of Bishop Edward Egan >> Transcript of Sept. 23, 1999 Videotaped Deposition of Bishop Edward Egan "If there is any question of this man's stability or ability," one doctor wrote, "I would recommend psychological testing before final vows." Despite his odd behavior, Pcolka was ordained in 1965 by then-Bridgeport Bishop Walter Curtis and assigned to St. Benedict's Parish in Stamford. Within months, he allegedly fondled an altar boy at the church...............
and this is the MOST shocking right here:

.............Over the course of five depositions, which were among the documents released Tuesday, Curtis testified that he kept "secret archives" from whichhe regularly purged "antiquated" complaints of sexual abuse. Curtis also said he viewed pedophilia as "an occasional thing" and not a serious psychological problem, and indicated that he was more concerned with weeding out potential gays among clergy applicants. In one deposition, Curtis claimed that there had been no complaints of children being sexually abused by a priest between 1961 and 1988 — even though multiple complaints had been filed. Although a dozen people eventually said they were abused by Pcolka, Curtis testified that he didn't remember any complaints against the priest, while Egan admitted that he dismissed many of the claims, simply saying in a deposition, "The 12 have never been proved to be telling the truth."...........

    .............
"These things [sexual abuse complaints] happen in such small numbers. It's marvelous when you think of the hundreds and hundreds of priests and how very few have ever been accused, and how very few have even come close to having anyone prove anything," Egan said in a deposition.............

here's some nyt coverage as well:

In Egan’s Depositions, a New View of a Sex Scandal

    By PAUL VITELLO

    .................

Then the lawyer sprang his big question: You could have prevented someone from hurting people and you decided not to. Why?

The witness was Edward M. Egan, then the Roman Catholic bishop of Bridgeport, Conn. The question was about a priest who had been accused of sexually molesting children.

“I didn’t make a decision one way or the other,” said Bishop Egan, whom the lawyer suggested had failed to act quickly against the cleric. “I kept working on it until I resolved the decision.”

The exchange is one of hundreds recorded in a vast trove of documents the Diocese of Bridgeport made public on Tuesday after battling in court for seven years to keep them sealed. The archive — more than 12,000 pages of memos, church records and testimony — was gathered for 23 lawsuits, alleging sexual abuse of children by seven priests, that the diocese settled in 2002.............

    shocking, shocking!!!

food carts (even from 'established restaurants') in OUR west hartford? oh hell, what is this, HARTFORD? in all seriousness, i really AM surprised about this. i know some of the 'rules' one has to adhere to when one has a restaurant in west hartford (some are incrediblly SILLY and/or STUPID) mmmmmmmmmm i could dig a falafel right about now.
Special Permit Would Allow Restaurants To Use Food Carts Outside In West Hartford
WEST HARTFORD — - Next summer, folks should be able to buy takeout gelato or other food from local restaurants if a proposal to allow sidewalk sales of food by established restaurants wins town approval. The proposal, sparked by a request earlier this year from several business owners, would allow a small number of already licensed restaurants to sell food from their restaurants in sidewalk carts in front of their addresses. The plan is still being refined. It seeks to amend zoning rules to create strict, first-ever regulations for food carts. Restaurants seeking a food cart would first need to apply to the town for a special use permit and attend a hearing before getting permission. "We're trying to avoid a Bushnell Park situation," Town Manager Ronald Van Winkle said Monday, referring to the numerous outdoor food vendors whose trucks and carts lined the street weekdays, catering to hungry pedestrians in a restaurant-poor stretch of Hartford.........
(in other words, we're trying to avoid ETHNIC foods or foods OF COLOR. well, that's MY interpretation at any rate)

Joe Lieberman: Still a fucking tool,

    .........

now with an extra serving of tool-ness:

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) raised hackles among liberals earlier this week when he claimed that the public option wasn't a part of the 2008 presidential campaign. He repeated that claim to reporters tonight, though acknowledged, when pressed, that then-candidate Barack Obama did in fact include a public option in his campaign health care proposal.

    And then there's this:

    Anyway, I'm opposed to it."............

    it's more than 6% that's for sure

no survey, no study, nothing could ever prove it. 90% of women abused by their partners (and men abused by THEIR partners...but women are more likely to be the ones abused) will never in a million years admit the abuse. i have seen abused women. i have heard every excuse in the book. i have done what i could to make them know they are not alone, make them know there is help (but THEY have to work very hard as well) and to make them know it's NOT their fault.

sometimes my talks have paid off and the women have gotten out, sometimes i see the women crawl right back into the beds of their abusers

it crosses color lines. it crosses classes. it crosses ethnicities. it crosses religions. it just is. it's everywhere. we must all work to stop it. the first step is getting rid of the stigma. to treat women as equal citizens. to not sweep domestic violence under the rug. to NOT hold the victim to blame.

from this article it sure does seem like the library wanted to hide ms gillies away from the public AND from her coworkers. sure seems like they didn't want to help her

Fired Worker's Lawsuit Puts Spotlight On Workplace Treatment Of Domestic Violence Victims

Heather Gillies won praise for her work as a children's librarian at the Stonington Free Library. She was dedicated to the job, so much so that she performed a story-time program for children shortly after being beaten, allegedly by her husband.

But commitment to her job meant nothing to her bosses after they learned she was a battered wife, Gillies says in a recently filed lawsuit. The lawsuit accuses the library of wrongful discharge, firing Gillies in part because she was a victim of domestic violence.

Not so, says the library, which is denying Gillies' charges in a 27-page answer to her complaint. The library says it accommodated Gillies when she needed time off and supported her when employees there learned about the abuse.

The legal battle, brewing in Superior Court in New London, has captured the attention of advocates against domestic violence, who are crediting Gillies with shining light on what they say is the often overlooked issue of how the workplace deals with employees struggling with family violence.

Too often, advocates say, victims may not get the help they need because of fear that doing so may cost them their jobs.................
