Company Accused of Firing Over Facebook Post

In what labor officials and lawyers view as a ground-breaking case involving workers and social media, the National Labor Relations Board has accused a company of illegally firing an employee after she criticized her supervisor on her Facebook page. 

This is the first case in which the labor board has stepped in to argue that workers’ criticisms of their bosses or companies on a social networking site are generally a protected activity and that employers would be violating the law by punishing workers for such statements.

The cause was chronic leukemia, with which she had lived for 21 years, her husband, the playwright David Rabe, said.

Ms. Clayburgh, who began her career in films and on Broadway in the late 1960s, was among the first generation of young actresses — including Ellen Burstyn, Carrie Snodgress and Marsha Mason — who regularly portrayed characters sprung from the new feminist ethos: smart, capable and gritty, sometimes neurotic, but no less glamorous for all that............

and i voted at morley school. i voted at 6 am. one used to vote in the front of the school in the auditorium. now one has to vote in the BACK of the school in the gym. i parked on the gym side, but the gates weren't open yet so i had to drive around to the front  side and walk around to the gym side. it was PITCH BLACK. no lights on the school grounds and NO lights on IN the school (at the front). there was a rape VERY near that school a few days ago. someone wasn't thinking. fine, it will be daylight soon, but as i type this, it's STILL pitch out. whoever is in charge, the police, the school, the town hall, the registrar of voters, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't let this happen again next year. 

1) make sure the gate is open at the REAR of the school

morning (as in VERY early) and night. if i'm walking, i'm not unsafe or reckless, don't get me wrong. BUT, i feel safe (or FELT safe) in this neighborhood. i'm usually out earlier than when this happened, but still, i always felt safe. at 5, 6 and 7 am, there are TONS of joggers and walkers and dog walkers and people on bicycles. it's that kind of neighborhood. heck, i went to morley (elementary school) which is in that hood. it's MY hood

Detectives talked with neighbors and are checking with neighboring police departments about unsolved sexual assaults as they investigate the assault of a woman who was jogging along Fern Street shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday morning

The woman was treated at a local hospital and released. Other than the sexual assault, she was not injured, police said.

The woman told police she was attacked by a man who dragged her into some bushes in the front yard of 311 Fern St. When the assault ended, she sought help from the residents, who called police at 6:56 a.m. The homeowners declined to comment..............

Police are asking West Hartford residents to go out in pairs as the search goes on for for the man who sexually assaulted a jogger on Wednesday morning.

The man grabbed the woman from behind on Fern Street around 6:50 a.m., pulled into bushes and sexually assaulted her, police said. She ran to a neighboring home for help and was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries.

Police believe it was a random attack and neighbors are shaken by what happened this morning in their quiet neighborhood.

The assault happened just blocks from West Hartford Mayor Scott Slifka's house.

"I woke up this morning and talked to my wife about it," he said. "It's the kind of thing that shakes you to your core."............

Connecticut Republican Senate candidate Linda McMahon is happy that World Wrestling Entertainment has toned down its often-risque tone, but she supports her company's First Amendment rights in the face of criticism from women's groups.

Speaking to ABC's Christiane Amanpour, McMahon wouldn't condemn an act where her husband ordered a woman to "bark like a dog."

Asked if, as a senator, she would campaign against that sort of portrayal of women, McMahon responded, "I do believe in the First Amendment rights."

"So you don't think there's anything wrong with it," asserted Amanpour.

"Well, content providers are clearly creating scenarios from an entertainment point of view..........

After waging a proxy war for months over the airwaves and through the mail, U.S. Senate candidates Richard Blumenthal and Linda McMahon faced one another Monday night and sparred over their records and their ideas on how to restart the economy.

In the high-stakes televised debate, neither candidate committed any major gaffes. Blumenthal, a Democrat, once again apologized for misstating his military record. McMahon, a Republican, acknowledged that the firm she once ran, World Wrestling Entertainment, had hired D.C. lobbyists. But there was scant mention of steroids, "Girls Gone Wild" or any of the other controversies surrounding WWE.............

Whether it was a court appearance or a trip to a police station, Tiana Notice talked to authorities about her troubles with her ex-boyfriend more than a half-dozen times in the six weeks before she died, allegedly at his hands, according to a report by the state victim advocate.

Along the way, she was met by lethargy, dismissive attitudes and even sarcasm, her parents and the state victim advocate said Tuesday.

"I'm basically here to be her voice, because her voice was silenced because people dropped the ball," said Notice's mother, Kathy Lewis, at the Legislative Office Building Tuesday.

.......On Friday, Feb. 13, the day before she died, Notice went to the Waterbury police station with a copy of her restraining order and a written statement from a witness and told police Carter had called her at work in violation of the order. She talked to an officer who couldn't confirm the existence of the order, the report states. It characterizes the way the officer treated her as "at best condescending."

Notice was so frustrated that when she left, she called her mother and recounted that she had said to the officer:

"What is it going to take before you guys do something! When I am dead?"

Lewis twice called the Waterbury police -- once on the night of Feb. 13, 2009 and again the next morning. The officer she talked to Friday night told her to have her daughter come back Tuesday. The department was shortstaffed on the long, Presidents Day holiday weekend, the report states..........

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon's online campaign ad using John F. Kennedy's words and image has drawn criticism from a member of the former president's politically prominent family.

McMahon's new ad features archival footage of JFK speaking in August 1963 about the need for a tax cut, saying the move will help stave off a recession and create new jobs.

But Edward M. Kennedy Jr., nephew of the president and son of former Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, called the ad "dishonest' because it implies JFK would have supported McMahon's tax policy.

"You attempt to conflate your economic policies with those of President Kennedy's in order to capitalize on his legacy,'' Kennedy wrote to the McMahon campaign. "Please stop misleading voters."...........

Until 1666, she appeared to live an ordinary life in Wethersfield, where she lived with her three daughters and her husband, the town crier.

But after her husband's death in 1666, her neighbors accused her of being a witch. She was accused of magically causing death, appearing with a spectral apparition and of using astrology to predict the future.................

i worked in avon FOREVER and have eaten in avon old farms hundreds of times. i loved it's oldness, it's creakiness, it's unevenness. i loved the fires in the winter.

The Avon Old Farms Inn restaurant, a landmark at the foot of Avon Mountain where generations of Hartford area residents held private gatherings, has closed.

The property had been in foreclosure proceedings since March 2009, according to court records. The owner, Shawn Daigle, reached an agreement last week with GE Capital in lieu of foreclosure, Bartley Halloran, a lawyer for Daigle said.

"GE Capital now owns the property, and Daigle has lost all the equity he invested," Halloran said Wednesday.................

The city council's plan to diversify its pre-meeting prayers to include an Islamic invocation — announced days before the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks — has sparked an outpouring of angry calls and e-mails from infuriated residents.

City Councilman Luis Cotto, who proposed having local imams lead the invocations at council meetings Monday and Sept. 27, said the council's website has been inundated with criticism.

Cotto said his goal in having an Islamic prayer was to protest what he called "the current wave of Islamophobia" in this country. It was also intended, he said, as a commentary on recent events, including the proposed Sept. 11 Quran burning by the leader of a small Florida church and the uproar over a planned mosque near ground zero in New York..........

They are four of about 15,000 women veterans in Connecticut, all who share a common bond: They are women who know how to survive in the worst of circumstances.

The role of women in the military has changed over time, but the military experience is the common denominator, said Linda Schwartz, commissioner of the state Department of Veterans Affairs. It doesn't matter their age, veterans still can share stories and help one another, said Schwartz, who was an Army nurse during the Vietnam War.......................

Hundreds of mourners packed the light-filled sanctuary of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church on Monday for the funeral of U.S. Army Sgt. Steven J. DeLuzio, who was killed in Afghanistan Aug. 22.

As the casket was carried into the church, mourners sang the hymn, "On Eagle's Wings" — "And He will raise you up on eagle's wings … and hold you in the palm of His hand."

The Rev. George Couturier of St. Dunstan Church in Glastonbury, DeLuzio's home parish, said that the tenacious hockey player and selfless patriot would have two words for the gathering of family, friends and military comrades: "Live passionately."............

In an effort to provide unusual and authentic thrills, companies and theme parks have devised several ways to make their rides stand out. But rarely have these scream machines used the environment around them in a ride that celebrates nature.

Enter Boulder Dash. This appropriately titled roller coaster has the distinction of being billed as the first built into the side of a mountain, with a track that moves along tree-lined terrain. As an enthusiast who has logged rides on more than 100 coasters nationwide, I had somehow missed this novelty — and it is practically in my own backyard, at Lake Compounce, a small family amusement park tucked in the hills of Bristol, Conn.................

Yale Researchers Look To Ancient Remedy To Fight Side Effects of Chemotherapy

Yale researchers have developed a medication based on a Chinese herbal recipe more than 1,800 years old to counteract the adverse effects of chemotherapy.

The medicine, called PHY906, would relieve the gastrointestinal side effects of a common chemotherapy drug known as CPT-11, but not the drug's effectiveness in fighting cancer cells. Yung-Chi Cheng, a professor of pharmacology at Yale and the paper's senior author, calls the medication "a marriage of Western and Eastern approaches to the treatment of cancer."..............

In February 2009, a distraught man armed with a handgun stopped his vehicle on a busy stretch of Interstate 84 in Hartford. State Trooper William Taylor was among the first police officers on the scene. He immediately closed off access to the highway and coordinated communications with other police agencies, “all while keeping the suicidal male calm while speaking with him on the phone,” read the citation for the Meritorious Service Award he later received.

On Tuesday, Trooper Taylor again found himself on the phone with a suicidal man. The man, Omar S. Thornton, was calling from inside a beer warehouse in Manchester, Conn., where he had just fatally shot eight co-workers and wounded two others...................

After killing eight people, Omar Thornton calmly called 911 and talked to a state police dispatcher for nearly four minutes, saying he "took things into his own hands" and regretted not killing more people before hanging up and killing himself as three police officers closed in.

"Hi, is this 911? This is Omar Thornton. The shooter over in Manchester,'' Thornton calmly told Trooper William Taylor.

"You probably want to know the reason why I shot this place up. Basically this is a racist place,'' Thornton told Taylor. "They treat me bad over here. They treat all other black people bad over here, too, so I just took things into my own hands and handled the problem. I wish I could have gotten more of the people."............

and here's a story that mentions how drivers come up. my dad was a teamster. my brother in law is a  teamster.  you HAVE TO pay your dues (so to speak). you start out low. you start out in the warehouse. THEN you get to drive. if you're new,  you get the crap routes. the more seniority you have....well you know the story.

as i said, i cannot speak to how the shooter was actually treated. he may or may NOT have been racially harassed. there is no excuse for racism. period. but way way way beyond that, murder neither heals nor solves one fucking thing. it just opens huge wounds

Some of the men who worked side-by-side with those who died Tuesday remembered them as good men and rejected the comments by Thornton and his friends and relatives claiming racism.

"I just want it to be known, it's not like that," said David Zylberman, 54, of Vernon, who has worked 34 years at Hartford Distributors, and saw Thornton open fire. "They are very good people."

"It's growing into something that's not really there," added Mike Pletscher, 57, of Bristol, another longtime employee. He said the claims of racism at Hartford Distributors are simply false. "There's nothing to it," he said.

He said he thinks Thornton may have felt mistreated because he was the lowest driver in seniority. "He didn't understand the system," Pletscher said. "He thought he was being picked on. When you're at the bottom you get the [expletive] jobs."

Union officials said this week that Thornton, who initially worked in the warehouse, complained to the union about not getting a driver job. Union officials explained to him that jobs were filled by seniority and that when his time came and a slot was open, he'd get a driver job, said Chris Roos, Teamsters Local 1035's secretary treasurer. And when a driver slot opened up about a year ago, Thornton got the job, he said..............

East Hampton Mother Said She Was Barred From Breast-Feeding In Town Park

A day at the beach for a nursing mother and four children last Tuesday turned into a confrontation with the town's parks department, followed by one with the police department this week, the woman and her husband said Monday.

Officials for both departments said Monday that the incident, at Sears Park on Lake Pocotopaug, is being investigated.

Last Tuesday, Kendra Dickinson took the four children she was caring for — her daughters, Riley, 4, and Ella, 2, and their two friends — to the lake after a morning of picking fruit at an orchard, she said.....................

it names the people killed. it tells us how some people tried to stop a crazed killer (and there are NO other words to describe him. he WAS A KILLER.)

there is no excuse nothing to justify what he did. there's also an article in the courant today from the MURDERER'S girlfriend. i'm not linking to it. it has me reeling.

IF  the MURDERER was being harassed (it's indeed possible although i'm not sure i'm totally buying it) and his supervisors weren't doing anything about it there were other avenues. how about his union rep (whom he ended up murdering)? the union has no record of complaints. how about the naacp? how about the aclu? how about ANY organization that could have investigated? if a noose was drawn on the bathroom door the police should have been called. HE could have called them. but no. he MURDERED PEOPLE.no excuse. none

to the families and friends of those dead and wounded, to the citizens of manchester and south windsor, to ALL of the citizens of connecticut, i am so very sorry for our loss. and it IS a loss. no one won

 

Workers Tried To Stop Omar Thornton

Five employees of Hartford Distributors Inc. tried to warn their fellow workers or physically stop Omar Thornton during his shooting spree, including a 77-year-old man who tried to run him over with a golf cart.

But Thornton shot them and others, leaving eight dead, and one man — Jerome Rosenstein, the man in the golf cart — fighting for his life.

Interviews with law enforcement sources and employees inside the building when the shooting spree began paint a picture of a man who went from calmly signing his name to a one-line resignation letter to a mass murderer who literally ran down some of his victims as they frantically tried to escape.
"He was eerily cool,'' Manchester Police Lt. Christopher Davis said Wednesday.

Teamsters Local 1035 President Bryan Cirigliano tried to stop Thornton as he opened fire on Steven Hollander, the company's chief financial officer, and Louis Felder, the director of operations, following the meeting at which Thornton resigned. But Thornton turned and shot Cirigliano in the head, killing him instantly. Felder and Cirigliano were Thornton's first victims.

Thornton chased two men — Victor James and Edwin Kennison — out of the warehouse, shooting them as they ran down the driveway. Kennison died immediately...........

i am stunned. stunned.  i know many of the drivers for the area's beer and liquor distributors. my father worked for a beer distributor (not hartford) and my brother in law currently works for a liquor distributor (not hartford). 

we cannot feel safe at work? gun violence MUST end. i don't want to preach but we MUST get guns off of the streets and we must do it NOW.

Omar Thornton almost slept through his 6 a.m. wakeup call Tuesday, springing to life only after the teenage brother of his girlfriend nudged him awake.

The 34-year-old kissed his girlfriend Kristi Hannah goodbye, told her he loved her, and then left her East Windsor apartment for work at Hartford Distributors Inc. in Manchester, where he was to meet about 7 a.m. with company and union officials about allegations that he had stolen beer from the beverage wholesaler.

Within hours, he was lying dead on an office floor, having taken his own life as police closed in after a rampage that left eight co-workers dead and made him the biggest mass murderer in state history...................

Manchester, Conn. (WTNH) - Police in Manchester say 34-year-old Omar Thornton of Enfield opened fire at Hartford Distributors, where he worked, at around 7:30 Tuesday morning. He killed eight people and then turned the gun on himself.

Two others were also injured following the shooting at Hartford Distributors at 131 Chapel Road.

Names of two of the victims were released Tuesday night. Bryan Cirigliano, 51, of Newington and Victor James, 59, of South Windsor. Mr. Cirigliano was president of Teamsters Local 1035. He was present during the disciplinary hearing. ...............

it's a WHITE KNUCKLE drive ALL the way from bottom to top. yes, even when you're going 5 mph (which you do 75% of the time due to the construction). i drove over it 5 days a week for MANY years (work). now i only go over it once every couple of months. AVON — Workers in the construction trades are used to rising early, but lately Todd Kennedy has taken that to extremes. Kennedy, a gable-builder from Coventry, who does most of his work in the Farmington Valley, rises well before 5 because he knows that a big, time-consuming obstacle blocks his morning commute: Avon Mountain.

"I have to leave at 5:30 every morning just to make sure I make a 7:30 arrival at my job site, because you always know that the traffic bottlenecks caused by the construction on Avon Mountain will add 45 minutes to the drive," Kennedy said recently, looking up from his table saw while he worked a job on Montevideo Road at the top of the mountain in Avon.

"By the end of the day, I feel trapped on this mountain," he said. "It takes forever just to get back on Route 44, and then my route through West Hartford will be blocked by all the commuters" trying to avoid the construction...............

and i wish i personally could stop each and every person i saw talking on a cell phone while driving. unfortunately i cannot. however a few local (and the state police) police forces including west hartford tossed out some tickets for that very offense.

Hartford-Area Police Look For Distracted Drivers Hundreds Of Tickets Issued As Part Of NHTSA Study

Officer Jen Roman stands in four-foot high weeds, peeking around the corner of an abandoned brick building on New Park Avenue. "White male, white Ford F-250, cellphone. Right hand, right ear," she says into her radio. Down the block, another officer stepped into the road and ordered the pickup truck driver to pull over for violating the state's cellphone law.

The man was one of many caught in the department's latest effort to deter distracted driving. Roman was a "spotter" for part of Wednesday, the fifth day in the second wave of a four-part federal study.

Police in West Hartford, Hartford, East Hartford and the Connecticut State Police are looking for cellphone violations in the area through today. Syracuse, N.Y. is the only other place in the country chosen for the study, sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The purpose of the study is to determine whether enforcing cellphone laws actually alters drivers' behavior, said. Lt. David M. Dubiel of West Hartford's traffic division. The first wave was April 10-16, he said, and more are planned in the fall and in spring of 2011..............
