Windsor Locks (WTNH) _ There was another huge homecoming this morning as members of a Stratford-based engineering battalion returned today after being away for more than a year.
The 192nd Engineer Battalion of the Connecticut Army National Guard out of Stratford was greeted with anticipation and excitement.
"I was gonna not cry when I got off the bus, but that didn't work too good," said Lt. Col. James Gibbons of the Connecticut Army National Guard.
It was hard to hold back the tears today for all the families of the 30 member unit who served a year in Iraq.
"Complete release, and excitement and happiness. You know you're anxious the entire time and when he finally steps off that bus everything just feels so good," said Sara Gibbons........

not kingswood market!
no! this is rather shocking. i've lived my whole life (well except for the first few years when i lived in hartford) in west hartford. i went to plant junior high (when there WAS a plant junior high). kingswood has been there forever. i'm sorry it's come to this and i DO hope they reopen somewhere else. (i can't WAIT to see what goes in there. i'm sure it will be some froo froo store that will keep in with black and blue square standards)

............Dodd will send a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid this afternoon informing him of his decision [to put a hold on the Senate FISA renewal bill because it reportedly grants retroactive immunity to telephone companies for any role they played in the Bush administration's warrantless eavesdropping program].
...By doing this, Dodd can effectively hold up the telecom immunity bill, because bills are supposed to have unanimous consent in the Senate before going forward. One Senator can make it very difficult to bring a bill to the floor by objecting to allowing it to go to a vote.
Dodd's planned action comes amid reports that the Senate Intelligence Committee has reached a deal with the White House on the legislation that would give telephone carriers legal immunity for whatever role they played in the National Security Agency's domestic eavesdropping program, which was approved by President Bush after 9/11. The White House and the phone companies have been lobbying aggressively for immunity, and the announcement of the immunity deal today dismayed many opponents.
This is a challenge to the Democratic leadership, but it's also a direct challenge to George Bush. This is using his position as a senator to defend his country. This is leadership...........

Groton (WTNH)_ A plane landed in Connecticut today carrying the answers to the prayers of more than a dozen families.
"You're very nervous when somebody goes off to Iraq and scared to death and you pray a lot to bring them back safely," said Sylvia Morgan, grandmother of soldier.
Fifteen members of the 1109th AVCRAD spent the past year fixing helicopters in Iraq and Kuwait. Meanwhile their families have been riding an emotional roller coaster.
"Sadness. Happiness when our son was born, and we miss him horribly," said Kate Morgan, wife of soldier.........

Killingworth (WTNH)_ If a picture is worth a thousand words, then perhaps a YouTube video posted on Army Sergeant Jason Lantieri's MySpace page while he was serving in Iraq says it all.
"Just another day at the office," the caption reads.
His family says his decision to be there was natural for him.
"This was part of the adventurous side of Jason. Part of what he wanted to see, more of the world. He wanted opportunities that he thought this was his ticket to try new things but I know he counted on coming home," said Kathy Miller, Lantieri's Foster Mother.
So did his family. They tell News Channel 8, Lantieri was killed October 10 due to an accident while working on a transportation unit.
His family says he was supposed to come home this summer, but his tour was extended......
Gov. M. Jodi Rell has ordered flags to be placed at half-staff after a 25-year-old Killingworth soldier was killed in Iraq.

Military officials said that Lantieri was injured during late night vehicle maneuvers near Iskandaryah, which is about 30 miles south of Baghdad. The incident is under investigation.He was assigned to Echo Company, 725th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division based in Fort Richardson, Alaska.Lantieri was supposed to come home over the summer, but his unit's deployment was extended, Miller said.......

Killingworth (WTNH) _ A 25-year old soldier from Killingworth is the latest Connecticut casualty of the Iraq War.
Jason Lantieri was killed early this morning in Baghdad, Iraq. The Department of Defense has not yet released the details of his deaths, but News Channel 8 has learned that he was on active duty and in the Army Airborne Division.
Lantieri graduated from Haddam-Killingworth High School in 2000. Killingworth Today reports he graduated from Western New England College in 2004..........

A 25-year-old Western New England College graduate was listed among the latest casualties of the Iraq War, a college spokesman confirmed today.
Jason Lantieri, of Killingworth, Conn., a small town near Middletown, was killed early Wednesday morning in Baghdad, Iraq.
"I'm hearing he really was a good kid and one of those kids that does leave an impression," Stephen Roulier, a college spokesman, said, noting that many friends of Lantieri had contacted the college upon learning of his death.
Lantieri graduate from the college in 2004 with a degree in business management, Roulier said.
According to other media reports, the Department of Defense has not yet released the details of his death. He was on active duty and in the Army Airborne Division.
Lantieri is the 39th person with ties to Connecticut to die in Iraq or Afghanistan.

WINDSOR LOCKS - U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Barry Albert came to on the side of a road, somewhere between Baghdad and Al Hillah."Pappy, Pappy, wake up!" a fellow soldier yelled. At first, Albert, 43, thought he was in bed - that was how his roommate usually woke him up in the morning. Then he felt the shrapnel digging into his upper thigh and remembered the four explosives, hidden in the utility pole along the road.One had blown out two tires on the Humvee he was driving. Two had ploughed through the truck, turning it within seconds into a metal heap of Swiss cheese. Another had found its way to his left leg............
................Albert is one of many injured soldiers now returning from war to find volunteers working on their homes or building new ones.The Windsor Locks American Legion Post 36, which is spearheading the renovations at Albert's house, heard about Albert's injury a couple months ago. Coincidentally, the group had established in February a program, "Heroes to Hometowns," to help returning soldiers like Albert. The program is modeled on a set of guidelines published by the national American Legion and is meant to give injured soldiers a local way to receive a battery of services, from financial assistance to snow shoveling.Albert became the first soldier to be helped by Heroes to Hometowns................

Danbury (WTNH) _ A Republican councilwoman from Danbury has sent an apology to the NAACP for sending racist e-mails to her friends.
News Channel 8 obtained copies of the offensive e-mails distributed by Pauline Basso. The e-mails take shots at illegal immigrants, Muslims and Africans.
"I'm just appalled. I can't believe someone who has a position as she does would do this," said Danbury resident Sonnie Council.
Rev. Ivan Pitts of the NAACP says, "We are outraged, deeply concerned and insulted."
In Danbury, undocumented workers have been a hot button issue.
"It is scary that someone in elected office is sharing these feelings," said Wilson Hernandez of the Ecuadorian Civic Center........

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Manny RamÃrez's towering walkoff home run - if a baseball lands in the Charles River does it qualify as a "splash hit?" - and the Red Sox charter aircraft both returned to earth sometime Saturday morning and throughout Red Sox Nation it feels like 2004 all over again.
There have been a lot of good nights at Olde Fenway since the Sox vanquished the Yankees (and Cardinals, by the way) three years ago, but this is the first time it's felt like the golden days of October '04.
Curt Schilling, one of the seven holdovers from that championship season, gets the ball today in a potential clinch game against the Angels. The Sox are on the threshold of advancing to the American League Championship Series and the Franconamen appear locked and loaded - ready for anything the Indians, or Yankees, can throw at them in the next round.........

a few minutes ago on bbc world service (on npr) i heard shays asking erik prince some questions (from yesterday i would assume). he asked something like, how many diplomats (who were under blackwater protection) died in 2005, 2006 and 2007 - NONE replied prince. shays then said,
"Thank you for doing a perfect job."
granted i didn't hear the whole session BUT i'll bet stomach-churning-shays didn't ask, 'HOW MANY INNOCENT CIVILIANS DID YOU BUTCHER in 2005, 2006, 2007???' could prince answer, NONE to that?

WASHINGTON: Guards working for a private American security firm in Iraq have an aggressive and sometimes reckless record - involvement in nearly 200 shootings in Iraq since 2005 - and their use by the U.S. State Department amounts to an expensive and perhaps indefensible privatization of the military, congressional Democrats said Tuesday.
But the head of the Blackwater security firm, Erik Prince, said his workers, operating in hostile and chaotic conditions, had been the victims of a "rush to judgment."
Representative Henry Waxman, the California Democrat who is chairman of a House committee that is studying the record of the firm in Iraq, said that companies like Blackwater amounted to an inadequately controlled private military force.
"If we don't have enough troops to do the job, then we need to get more troops," Waxman said at a hearing Tuesday of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Privatizing security services was "causing us problems with the Iraqi people," he said.
But Prince - commenting publicly for the first time on a shooting in Baghdad on Sept. 16 in which Blackwater guards have been accused of killing at least eight civilians - rejected the depiction of his employees as trigger-happy "cowboys."..........

i thought i was doing my good deed of the day
well, I THOUGHT WRONG
i was at the corner of asylum and prospect (the very same corner i found mambo sven wandering around at) at about 2:30 ish am this morning. stopped at the light, smoking a butt listening to npr. i hear something and turn to my leftt. it's a young woman, short hair, glasses with a backpack. she asked me for a ride. #1) there is NO room in my car for anyone but the driver. i'm not exaggerating not one little bit. there is NO room front OR back OR even in the trunk. and #2) there is NO way (even if there WAS room in my car) i would give a stranger a ride at 2:30 am.
i told her, no, i couldn't give her a ride and of course i pointed out there was NO place for her to sit. she started crying and told me she had just walked from the base of avon mountain (which is quite the haul in the middle of the night). her brakes went out (in avon) and her car was towed. she added the avon police were the ones who gave her a ride to the bottom of the mountain. well, i told her i'd give her some money to call a cab. i handed her $10.00. she didn't have a phone (no surprise there at this point). sooooooooo, i called a cab for her on my cell phone. i gave the location as the corner of prospect and asylum. the dispatcher said they MUST have a street address. they couldn't pick someone up at a corner. ok i said, i'd call right back. i told the young woman to walk down prospect a bit to the first house and i'd meet her there. i drove over, got the address of grace church (870 prospect) and called the cab company again. i gave them that address and told them the woman was going to broad street (oh, that's where she told me she lived). i backed my car up a bit (she hadn't quite made it to 870) and told her a cab would be there in 5 to 20 minutes. then I GAVE HER ANOTHER $5.00. i drove off into the darkness. picked my coffees up at dunkin' and came into work. no sooner than i sat down but my cell rang. it was a man asking if i was at the church. noooooooo i said (and i felt a chill). well he then asked if i was the woman he picked up. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i said. turns out he was a couple of blocks from the address she gave him (on broad) and the meter was at $8.00. she told him she only had $5.00!!!! so she gave him the 5, started to cry and got out.
i told the man no. she had MORE than 5 (i didn't tell him i gave her 15). now i felt bad for him. i even entertained the though (i got it AFTER i hung up with him) of calling the cab company back and asking him to stop by and i'd GIVE HIM the rest of her fare (i didn't though).
i told him i found her wandering around prospect, her telling me her car got towed, me giving her money and me calling her a cab. that's it, i didn't know her, i just felt badly for her.
he mentioned something about calling the police (not on me of course, on her).

The church, which runs four of the state's 30 hospitals, had fought the state law requiring medical personnel to give rape victims emergency contraception, sold as Plan B, even if the women are ovulating.
Church officials had said the treatment was tantamount to abortion and had been considering legal action, but they took a step away from that position Thursday, in a joint statement by the Catholic Bishops of Connecticut and leaders of the Catholic hospitals...........
once again, plan b is NOT an 'abortion' pill. it does NOT cause an abortion. what it does is, it PREVENTS conception.

Some 75 yards from the Connecticut River, the 10-by-18, carpeted structure had everything she and a longtime friend, Willie, needed: kerosene heaters, food, books, even photographs. Willie built it in the early '80s with wood he collected.Now, the heaters have exploded. Firefighters are hampered by the remote location. There are no roads, so a custom-made, four-wheel-drive truck with a tank supplies the water.Thick, black smoke is visible to Hartford-area commuters. Willie, too, sees it from downtown."I was on Main Street, picking up some things," he says later. "I saw the smoke, and I had an uneasy feeling."By the time he gets back to the river, his home is gone. His first concern is Nancy, but she's safe at town hall.Only possessions far enough from the heat and flames survive - a 30-foot-long wood pile, birdhouses and windsocks Willie had hung from branches, and more than a dozen chimes attached to a beam he'd tied up between trees. i drive back and forth to work
(amendment 9/30/2007: i have been gently reminded, i also have a TON of pens, most of which are anchored in my bun AND several little ketchup bottles in my handbag)
to the grocery store, to my dad's house, to the half door, to an occasional restaurant, a movie theater, a lecture at a local college or university, to a friend's house. perhaps i'll go here or there every once in a while, but i don't travel that much. i usually carry a bit of makeup with me. some butts, some mints, an extra pair of sox, my digital camera, my mp3 player, my knitting, a book, lots of pens, some money (not a lot). in my car i have extra shoes, boots, water, cds, some yarn, a denim jacket, a wrap (as in if it's cold out, it goes around my body), books, a magazine on women with tattooes that i am in, three GIANT rats seatbelted in the back seat along with their friend, little teddy (remind me, around the holidays to tell the festive tale (or is it tail) of the three christmas rats). i know i have more in that car, i just can't think of ALL of it right now.
i drink a LOT of coffee. two big gulps every morning at dunkin'. i am currently listening to some leon russell. i'm currently reading: gertrude bell: queen of the desert, shaper of nations by georgina howell. i watch lots of television. i write. i don't sleep very much at all (usually averaging 3 hours a night) but i am USUALLY in bed BY 8:00 each night. as i said, not sleeping. i don't like violence. i have never even gotten a traveling traffic ticket (i have gotten two PARKING tickets in my whole life. ONE was not justified). i pay my taxes and i'm honest. i don't build bombs in my basement or plot to bring the united states down. i knit.

The personal travel records are meant to be stored for as long as 15 years, as part of the Department of Homeland Security's effort to assess the security threat posed by all travelers entering the country. The U.S. government is collecting electronic records on the travel habits of millions of Americans who fly, drive or take cruises abroad, retaining data on the persons with whom they travel or plan to stay, the personal items they carry during their journeys, and even the books that travelers have carried, according to documents obtained by a group of civil liberties advocates and statements by government officials. The personal travel records are meant to be stored for as long as 15 years, as part of the Department of Homeland Security's effort to assess the security threat posed by all travelers entering the country. Officials say the records, which are analyzed by the department's Automated Targeting System, help border officials distinguish potential terrorists from innocent people entering the country. .................

Though it may sound generic, the name of the Elmwood section of West Hartford has a distinct historical provenance. In 1777, Captain Ebenezer Faxon planted 13 elm trees at the corner of New Britain Avenue and South Quaker Lane to celebrate the crucial American victory over the British forces led by Gen. John Burgoyne at the Battle of Saratoga. After the Revolutionary War, more elms were planted along New Britain Avenue and Newington Road.The tall and graceful trees gave the neighborhood its name and identity. But in the early to mid-20th century, Dutch elm blight took these and countless other American elms. Well, the elms are coming back. .......

When World War II and Korean War veteran Nick LaPenta started his protest against the war in Iraq, he stood alone on a busy street corner in Manchester holding his sign.For the first three months, he protested by himself, accepting everything from honking horns and waves of approval to insults from passing motorists. But he soon drew a following, with other anti-war demonstrators joining him every Saturday on the corner of Main and Center streets for the next four years.Those who joined him were inspired by his tenacity and loved his gregariousness. He even earned the respect of a war supporter who stands vigil on the opposite street corner. But six months ago, LaPenta learned congestive heart failure and kidney disease would soon kill him, and he was admitted into hospice care.That didn't deter him. His wife still dropped him off Saturday mornings to sit in his wheelchair on the street corner. He wasn't just protesting the war, he was protesting death, LaPenta said. His body may have been ready to go, but his mind wasn't......

DETROIT -- A U.S. Justice Department official has been arrested on suspicion of traveling to Detroit over the weekend to have sex with a minor. John David R. Atchison, 53, an assistant U.S. attorney from the northern district of Florida, was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Detroit Monday afternoon. An undercover officer posed as a mother offering her child to Atchison for sex, according to police.
He is charged with enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity. According to authorities, Atchison made contact with a detective working undercover for the Macomb County Sheriff's department's. The detective, acting as the child's mother, allegedly arranged a sexual encounter between Atchison and her 5-year-old daughter, police said. In deposition, detectives said Atchison suggested the mother tell her daughter that "you found her a sweet boyfriend who will bring her presents." The undercover detective expressed concern about physical injury to the 5-year-old girl as a result of the sexual activity. Detectives said Atchison responded, " I am always gentle and loving; not to worry, no damage ever, no rough stuff ever. I only like it soft and nice."...........

i don't like the idea of censorship
but i DO like the idea of people who are responsible. who treat women as equals. who treat people of all colors as equal. yes, people who have a sense of humor but also have a soul. when one is responsible for publishing a college newspaper, they really should think hard about publishing articles (even 'satirical' - their word NOT mine) stating rape isn't all that bad. especially for unattractive women (you know what happened earlier this year with THAT) AND about publishing articles about pissing on a young grrrl locked in a closet. (the grrrl in the 'cartoon' was latino. i am MORE concerned with the gender of the character than the ethnicity. of course that too is a factor). well think twice unless you go to kkk university. then i would understand (you know what i mean)

The comic strip, dubbed "Polydongs," depicts explicit images surrounding the humiliation and degradation of a 14-year-old Latina girl. The paper printed a disclaimer saying it "does not support the kidnapping of (and subsequent urinating on) children of any age or ethnicity."
Said CCSU professor Katharine Hermes of the strip: "It's disturbing that it would appear as a cartoon, suggesting that there's something funny about this, although I couldn't find anything funny in it."
The comic is not the The Recorder's first brush with public outrage. Last February, an opinion piece was published detailing how less attractive and overweight women "may benefit" from being raped.
Many called for the resignation of the student paper's executive editor, Mark Rowan, though he is still at the helm./................

i worked very hard on this!
and i finally gave it to my friend nikki (as a wedding shower present). it didn't come out EXACTLY as the one on the cover of vogue knitting magazine's 25th anniversary issue. i used natural plant dyed cotton. it really was very easy to do, just time consuming. the part that took me the LONGEST was sewing the damn beads on AND then sewing each flower on individually. dang i HATED that (i do NOT sew)

Novelist Wally Lamb will be among 10 poets and writers reading from their works in a celebration honoring free speech freedom fighter Avery Doninger Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007 at the Litchfield Inn's Bistro East Ballroom. Also, other special guests might show up at the last moment.The event begins at 1 p.m. and includes live music by four high school bands. Hors d'oeuvres, cheese and fruit will be served and there will be a cash bar.Doninger, a senior at Lewis S. Mills High School in Burlington, has civil rights actions pending in the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City and U.S. District Court in New Haven. She and her mother, Lauren Doninger, sued Principal Karissa Niehoff and Superintendent Paula Schwartz after they removed Avery from the ballot for Class of 2008 secretary.Avery Doninger was among a group of four students who lobbied the community for support of an annual battle of the bands sponsored by the Student Council. Schwartz became very upset after taxpayers called her and she cancelled the event known as Jamfest. Doninger subsequently referred to administrators in a live journal blog as central office douchebags, and Schwartz's son found the posting a couple weeks later. While Avery Doninger was banned from school office, another student who called Schwartz a dirty whore was given an award and lauded for citizenship.School officials suppressed the write-in vote in which Doninger was elected by a plurality. Schwartz refused to accept Doninger's apology for her choice of words. During an assembly, Niehoff banned free-speech and Team Avery t-shirts and seized at least one shirt.The Doningers are seeking -- among other remedies -- an apology for civil rights violations, recognition of the write-in victory and sharing of the secretary position with the administration-backed candidate.U.S. District Judge Mark Kravitz denied a motion for a preliminary injunction and his ruling is being appealed to the Second Circuit...............

tomorrow morning on the early show (also cbs) at 7:18 am, the fbi will be discussing billy's case.

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, who is among the Senate's fiercest hawks, blamed Iran for the deaths of "hundreds of American troops," and claimed the US has evidence that Iran is training insurgents outside Tehran before sending them to Iraq. He asked whether the US should expand its invasion into Iran.
"Is it time to give you authority, in pursuit of your mission in Iraq, to pursue those Iranian Quds Force operations in Iranian territory, in order to protect Americas troops in Iraq," Lieberman (I-CT) asked at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee.......

the person who is following you or trying to pull you over is a police officer, drive (SLOWLY) to the nearest police station (or hospital). then you can let the person approach your vehicle. of course if they are in a fully MARKED police car then yeah, PULL OVER. if they are not, use your head, use good judgement. always be safe.
Man impersonating Milford police assaults woman ,
Milford (WTNH) _ Police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a woman while pretending be a Milford police officer.
Police say the impersonator followed the victim in a gray Crown Victoria, with tinted windows and police lights, before pulling her over on North Street in Milford.
When the victim got out of her vehicle he used physical force and touched her inappropriately, then took off southbound down North street. The victim followed the man to Boston Post Road, but lost sight of him there.
The suspect is described as being a white male, standing about 6' tall and weighing 160 lbs. He has short cropped brown hair, brown eyes and no facial hair. ..................
