Former state resident killed in service in Iraq

(Salem-WTNH, Nov. 27, 2006 10:35 PM) _ A Salem native serving in Iraq has been killed in a road side bombing.
Army Captain Jason Hamill was winding down his tour of duty and getting ready to go home in less than one week.
by News Channel 8's Annie Rourke
Hamill had survived a year in Baghdad and was killed with one week left before returning home.
His father said his unit had already packed up their things and was ready to go.
Friends and family in Salem are now trying to cope with the enormous loss.
"He died a hero, but I would rather have my friend back," says Sean O'Brien, friend.
Sean O'Brien and Hamill have been life long friends.
O'Brien says there is no one better than 31-year-old Army Captain Jason Hamill..........

As a close family friend... I wanted to thankyou for the remembrance of Jason. It is so incredibly sad that this has happened. DAYS before his tour was to end. Jason was an exceptional man... my he rest in peace and the family find some comfort in memories of him.

I was saddened to hear of Jason's passing. I knew the triplets in High School. Jason was a great guy, really committed to what he believed in... even in high school! He was all about band. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

I lived with Jason on the Eddy 5 floor at Uconn. He was easily one of the nicest guys that I have ever met. His loss deeply saddens me and I know that his values of service, kindness and respect will be carried on by all who knew him.

I had the great honor of knowing Jason at UConn and also serving with Jason in the army. We did our tour in Germany and Kosovo together. He was a cut above the rest...a natural born leader. To the family I would say that there are so many people who have been affected by Jason in a positive way. I will never forget Jason and his sacrafice. I feel that his passing has in some way changed my life forever. How will people ever know what a great man he was. RIP.

I did not know Captain Hamill, but as an Army Veteran I am truly sorry the Captain did not arrive home alive and well. I am not a praying man, but I am truly sorry this fine young American died at such an early age. My heart goes out to Captain Hamill's family, and I wish them well.

I attended his funeral in full class A uniform. I didn't know the man...I was screamed at my protestors..all in all, it was moving. I cried my eyes out for this man, godspeed

i am guessing you were screamed at by that 'religious' cult (i think from kansas or someplace like that) full of members from the same family, they do NOT count for A THING

i cannot imagine ANYONE else screaming at our men and women in uniform. i am 100% against us being in iraq. i would NEVER DREAM of taking my feelings out on those that served (or are serving). they are heros to me.

i am so very sorry for all of what you've been though and seen and experienced.

thank you for serving.
