i don't like the idea of censorship

but i DO like the idea of people who are responsible. who treat women as equals. who treat people of all colors as equal. yes, people who have a sense of humor but also have a soul. when one is responsible for publishing a college newspaper, they really should think hard about publishing articles (even 'satirical' - their word NOT mine) stating rape isn't all that bad. especially for unattractive women (you know what happened earlier this year with THAT) AND about publishing articles about pissing on a young grrrl locked in a closet. (the grrrl in the 'cartoon' was latino. i am MORE concerned with the gender of the character than the ethnicity. of course that too is a factor). well think twice unless you go to kkk university. then i would understand (you know what i mean)

i want to know what these MEN are thinking. yes the person who wrote rape is fun had a dick (and IS a dick) and the person who is responsible for publishing THAT and THIS NEW 'cartoon' has a dick and IS a dick as well.

the cartoonist is unidentified (and NOT a student at ccsu) however, the EDITOR IS mark rowan and the RAPE IS FUN author is john petroski. i think we should ALL remember those names.
Cartoon Prompts Protests Against College Paper in Conn.
HARTFORD, Conn. The student-run newspaper at Central Connecticut State University is under fire for publishing a cartoon this week that critics call racist and sexist. The three-frame comic, titled "Polydongs," features two characters who mention locking a "14-year-old Latino girl" in a closet and urinating on her. It was published in Wednesday's edition of The Recorder, a weekly newspaper distributed free on campus. "We are outraged about this cartoon, which only dehumanizes women and especially Latino women," said Francisco Donis, a psychology professor and president of the university's Latin American Association. The Student Media Board met Friday to discuss the cartoon, and members of the Latin American Association and Latin American Student Organization planned to gather in a separate meeting to discuss their response. Some plan to seek the removal of student editor Mark Rowan and to take other steps to make the campus more welcoming to Hispanics and other minority groups. "A lot of Latinos don't feel very welcome here at Central," Donis said. "In the last few years, the environment here at Central has deteriorated." ..........

CCSU Student Paper Causes Stir With Comic
'Polydongs' Depicts Kidnapped Latina Locked In Closet

NEW BRITAIN, CT -- Central Connecticut State University students and faculty said Thursday they are livid over a controversial comic strip featured in the school newspaper, The Recorder.
The comic strip, dubbed "Polydongs," depicts explicit images surrounding the humiliation and degradation of a 14-year-old Latina girl. The paper printed a disclaimer saying it "does not support the kidnapping of (and subsequent urinating on) children of any age or ethnicity."
Said CCSU professor Katharine Hermes of the strip: "It's disturbing that it would appear as a cartoon, suggesting that there's something funny about this, although I couldn't find anything funny in it."

The comic is not the The Recorder's first brush with public outrage. Last February, an opinion piece was published detailing how less attractive and overweight women "may benefit" from being raped.
Many called for the resignation of the student paper's executive editor, Mark Rowan, though he is still at the helm./................

CCSU Cartoon Arouses Fury
By MATT BURGARD Courant Staff Writer
NEW BRITAIN - The campus newspaper at Central Connecticut State University, which came under fire earlier this year for printing a satirical article extolling the virtues of rape, is the target of angry protests again after it printed a comic strip this week that made reference to locking a teenage Hispanic girl in a closet and urinating on her.Francisco Donis, a professor at the university and president of its Latin American Association, said the group plans to submit a letter today calling for the ouster of Mark Rowan, the editor of The Recorder."I would like to see him removed from his position because he clearly does not understand how the things he prints hurt people," Donis said..............
...........Earlier this year, Miller convened a special task force after the Recorder printed a controversial satire in which student editor John Petroski likened rape to a "magical experience" that has been a benefit to society for centuries. The article - which defended rape as a way for "ugly women" to enjoy sex - sparked protests by dozens of students, including women's and gay rights groups. The task force, which included Rowan and other members of the Recorder staff, concluded that the paper had a right to print offensive material, but should strive to be sensitive to minority groups who have different perspectives than the paper's mostly white staff.................

THERE IS NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT BEING RAPED OR ABOUT A 14 YEAR OLD BEING LOCKED UP AND PISSED ON. NOTHING

Some may argue Free Speech in regards of the newspaper's expression of the sex and racial issues in the community. Personally, I think this issue is exploiting the core democratic value: Pursuit of Happiness. In our country everyone has the right to pursue happiness in their own way as long as they don't violate the rights others. Minorities have the right to find happiness in their education, which there at liberty to do. To interfere with them being comfortable and proud as they travel through campus is such a big crime! If any girl was caught being urinated on by a anyone, I would want to here about the charges against individual with the obscene nature and how that individual will have to pay. I'm not completely sure by the information in this blog if this was a private and consented incident or rape type of an issue. To exploit and embarass the girl who was treated like a toilet is horrible and I would consider it to be harassment! In all my claims, the newspaper as a whole should have to take responsibility for their publishing and understand that there job is to spread the news everyone will benefit from knowing; not for humiliation towards certain minority groups that were equal enough to learn in the same college that non-minorities are recieving education. Things like this really set us back.

i guess if newspaper content doesn't conform to the narrow mindset of the libtard crowd, then it's to be censored...

In no particular order, here are few things that trouble me about the outrage. Any reference to the false notion that the cartoon "depicts explicit images" of the content of concern can be forgotten. It simply does not happen. There's a door in the background with chains and a lock on it. There's a character in a bathtub. To say it "depicts explicit images" is nothing short of a lie. Next, way too much focus on the discalimer. Not enough "Oh, I get it, it's not crazy enough as it is, so put a completely zany disclaimer after. It's another piece of the cartoon." They call it a sense of humor because you are required to sense things, even things so lead-pipe obvious as hyperbole. Also, outrage at someone who's job it is to probe new territory is insanity. We pay people to make us laugh, because it is so hard to do on our own. Ever see the Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns can't find a portrait artist he likes? The humor is in the fact that he's so upset about a problem we'd all love to have. Lastly, the uproar is likely to overshadow the fact that this is obviously a talented cartoonist. Visually it is a strikingly beautiful piece of comic art, outstanding in a morass of poorly drawn, unfunny dreck. Drone on and worry yourselves over something that matters. [beernewz@cox.net]

kristen, i agree. i have a GIANT problem with a girl (of 14) being LOCKED up and treated like a toilet.

willie, i think the editor of the paper should have made a decision NOT to publish that cartoon. that is NOT censorship. it would have been a sound DECISION. once again, it involved someone who is UNDERAGE, a GIRL, being pissed on

andrew, i have NO issues with explicit things. i DO have issues with women or girls (or even boys) being treated like toilets. if you don't think violence against women is an important issue, ask your mother or your sister or your aunt or some of your women friends. would YOU want one of them pissed upon, especially at age 14?

Glad you liked my comment. Perhaps I was too subtle though...?

I'm glad you have a problem with underage girls being locked up and peed on. It makes sense. I do too (If she was 18 and willing though, then it's just kinky...).

Nonetheless, I hope you realize that cartoons are not actually real. No one was actually peed on.

The urination isn't even the funny part of the cartoon, actually -- that's the set up. You probably didn't even see it though.

:-*

Take care.

you have NO idea what i accept, what i think is funny and what i realize.

i realize cartoons are NOT real. i also know there is far too much violence against children and women. i don't think it's acceptable in a comic published in a college newpaper for a 14 year old girl to be LOCKED UP and 'URINATED' on. it is NOT funny. see if you can find a woman who was abused to talk to you about her abuse. how it started. see if you can find a woman who was raped to talk to you. about her attack and her attacker. it may be hard to find one who will talk to you, but it won't be hard to find out (one out of five women have been assaulted).

in the s&m or b&d world or lifestyle, some find 'golden showers' pleasurable. if that is between CONSULTING adults (where ONE OF THEM IS NOT KIDNAPPED AND LOCKED UP), that sure the hell is FINE with me

the only thing worse than what was published is the reaction to it. suppression of speech helps no one, no matter how disturbing or offensive the speech.

bravo to President Jack Miller for respecting the Constitution.

oh andy i agree with you. what i was saying was i didn't want it to be censored, i just wanted a decision made NOT to publish it in a college newspaper. it was a VERY poor choice to select a cartoon involving a kidnapped and locked up 14 year old grrrl. i didn't want the comic to be destroyed.

i of course meant CONSENTING (not consulting - hey it was early)

Actually, just last year a girl was peed on at UConn and one of the students came to CCSU. And in W.Va. a real girl was kidnapped, held in a closet, raped and made to eat feces. People do this stuff. Making fun of it is not on. It's not about censorship, but appropriateness. This stuff belongs behind a counter with Hustler, etc. not free for the taking at CCSU.

i know about the woman who was kidnapped, tortured, stabbed, raped, burned with hot water, told she was going to be killed and called the n-word in west virginia. i know it was a mother and son, mother and daughter and two others (at least). i know the mother and son combo were responsible for killing an 85 year old woman (the mother did that and got FIVE years. you tell me how that is just) and the son killed his stepfather. he couldn't have gotten much time because he's out AND very young

i know about the uconn case but i believe she was ejaculated upon not urinated upon. makes no never mind, it was A HORRIBLE ASSAULT either way

Funny coincidence, my wife also said "the publisher could have told the cartoonist 'sorry kid - this won't work in our paper, but Playboy etc. pay handsomely for stuff like this.'" And she, along with my mother, sister, her mother and so on see it as a joke. They see it as a vile, un-called-for joke, but just the same...

Unknown said...

andrew i don't think anything at all involving a kidinapped and locked up 14 year old grrrl is a joke

i have seen far too much abuse of children AND women to think it's funny

You cannot corrall an idea. This cartoon has nothing to do with sexual abuse or kidnapping, only the thought of it. Why did the chicken cross the road? Chickens generally do not cross roads, therefore, no harm ,no foul. The punchline could be 'to gang-fuck the corpse of Elvis on a throne of human skulls', but there's still no actual chicken, no actual road.

andrew, i guess you never got into plato......

what is more real. the table or the IDEA of the table. i understand it was a comic. i understand it was NOT explicit. it DID talk about pissing on a 14 year old grrrl. whether it was real or an IDEA i don't care for it and i think the editor of the paper made a VERY serious mistake publishing it in a college newspaper.

i am not talking about south park or a chicken here. i'm ONLY talking about polydongs right now. it was highly offensive.

are you not offended by the IDEA of a 14 year old kidnapped and locked in a closet? i am

although i happen to know children who have had much worse done to them. i know some adults who will NEVER adjust to life because of what happened in their childhood (they make NO excuses. they function and are NOT people who harm others. they will just never be happy deep down).
